"part of gaming culture" is bullshit. The culture is very toxic and unwelcoming. It might be normal but it really shouldn't be. It's like beheadings and stoning in some countries, it's normal but should it be? It's like only biggest of assholes play games and that turns a lot of people off from gaming. This might be one of the reasons as to why casual gaming is so popular, their communities are not nearly as asshole as those of hardcore games.
Also good luck boycotting news outlets and their advertisers, I doubt they will notice anything if a few nerds stop buying their stuff.
The worst people are the ones who just "Can't play a game unless they can choose gender"
This is such a big problem in MMORPG's. It's so much easier for players to look at a gender-locked character and know what equipment they use, what skills they use, and the match up relative to your character. It's even good for telling stories or character backgrounds like in Vindictus. Gunz 2 has genderlocked classes, and you can tell the instant you see someone what guns they use and what skills they can use. If games like that had free customization and character creation, there would be extremely bland and obnoxious equipment for classes like in WoW.

No harm in trying really.

It's not even part of gaming culture, it's internet/online culture. Going to any webpage with comments enabled portrays this.

For some reason when people are anonymous some people act like complete and total assholes.
It's not just "gaming" - it's virtually anything on the internet.

It really boils down to the community of individual games. The bigger a game's community is, the more arseholes there are in the community thus making the chance bigger of running into those arseholes. MOBAs, CS:GO and COD are probably the biggest offenders in that. On the other hand, how 'hardcore' a game is isn't going to be a indicator of how many arseholes you are going to encounter while playing the game. The amount of utter arseholes I met in Red Orchestra 2/ Rising Storm in around 170 hours of playing is easily countable on one single hand, and I wouldn't really call that game casual in the slightest.

This is a serious question.
No. If you wanted them to male for any reason that isn't 'males are better than females' then you're fine. Although if things are going to carry on the way they're going by the time you retire you'll be doxxed for being a misogynist.

But fear not! As Zoe Quinn built up a web group for people who are victims of doxxing and harassment!

Although I don't agree with Anita Sarkeesian's shotty attempt at critiquing gender roles in gaming culture, I do believe there is the need for better racial and gender representation. By that I mean you can keep the sexy scantily clad women and overly chiseled white guy heroes, but I think there needs to be more variety. There definitely seems to be a recent rise in variety and I think that's awesome.
One of my pet peeve arguments that is thrown around quite often, is that it's the artists vision to have this white male protagonist and you should be able to force them to do something different.
1. Nobody is trying to censor or force people to change their characters. They're offering critique and it's their right to argue against this just as much as is the "artist" to create these characters.
2. I highly doubt this is an artistic decision. Being involved with game development I have learned that 90% it has nothing to do with the art of the game but rather the marketing. Producers and marketing teams influence these decision most often, not the artists. I'm sure most artists would love to create a variety of characters, but most of the time originality loses it's footing. You wouldn't believe how many really unique project pitches are scratched because the publisher or whoever is funding won't think it will sell.

Hi please quit trying to make cool snipes and instead respond to those really well thought out arguments on page 11 that you conveniently ignored, such as "nobody is saying this" "no you said it right here".
That is, unless you're just trolling. In which case, good job, I give you a B+.
These kinds of videos now anger me so much that I simply can't watch them, because they ruin my day.
