Things I hate about modern gaming: stories - Maddox - General

Kind of understand what he's getting at, still comes off as completely wrong though. The advantage of games without a story is they're incredibly easy to get into. You don't need a backstory to play a game of snap, tetris, grids or guess who but for games that require a story or context to be played they're a necessity of modern gaming - especially seeing as most modern games are constantly trying to improve on older games and add yet more features there's going to be plenty of things people dislike about them. I have a huge distaste for the ranking/unlocking systems in place for games like CS:GO, Planetside 2 and APB:Reloaded that it's kind of pushed me off playing most modern shooters, didn't see any problem with just spawning with whatever you liked and not having to sink time into unlocking something to use it. I dunno he still kind of makes a good point that you don't need to care about the story in order to get through the game though, most speedrunners of games will completely ignore the story as it's necessary in majority cases to get a faster completion time. tl;dr: you don't need a story for games, imo unlock systems suck in modern shooters and speedrunners ignore the story for faster completion times in most cases.

Stories are okay. Unskippable cutscenes and framerate caps for a 'cinematic' experience are not.

I think he has the problem of not understanding or respecting games as an art or sport, and instead just entertainment. He's stuck in 1980. I don't like TLOU but the TLOU 'babble' parts were character and world building, I don't see why he can't just accept that games can explore a powerful and meaningful narrative. Then again, by the sounds of it he doesn't think movies can either, which makes me think he's secretly from the Victorian era, or he literally does not know what creative medium is at the same time as being a popular culture critic on YouTube (which is pretty common) or he's a sociopath. Not to say that all games need a story, of course CS wouldn't benefit from it, but The Witcher and Mass Effect would be nothing with their 'story'. Is this just the case of 'story' being the wrong word, since games don't need to tell a story to tell an engaging narrative, or build an engaging world. Maybe 'games' are the wrong word, since games are more than a video interpretation of toys and are instead designed as art akin to books and movies, and sport akin to football and rugby. Never seen Maddox be such an idiot, of course I disagree, but I more than that I think he's being flatout dumb.

aw yes. A first google search result based proto essay that generalizes "modern gaming" into a very finite subgroup of games that are actually the ones hes cherry picking in order to make a pointless argument using words like "objective" and "story" as blatantly as possible. "You know what i hate about movies?: the story. The movie is about movement, i dont need people talking and saying irrelevant shit all over it, i wanna see things move". When you say shit like that, thats when you should know you you are part of the problem. If anything, games ARENT using the potential of a good story. With half-life, the last of us, metal gear solid, gta etc, we are barely even scratching the surface of how a good story can make the game 100% better. Fuck this and its old minded prejudices.

I just couldn't believe he used the Pac-man cutscene as a real example. Like holy fuck it has charm, and he is literally the only person, besides maybe high score setters who see it a million times, that get mad about that shit unsarcastically.

His reasons for this are pretty bad. Of course no one wants a full story in something like Megaman or Mario, because those are things where the gameplay is all that's important because of limiations, so they only have some brief backstory. Most games now use video games as a method for telling a story, saying they shouldn't have any story because "they're not movies" is stupid. They're another medium that can be used to tell a story.

Imagine, people taking Maddox seriously.

It's a good thing this medium can be whatever you want them to be, and therefore we have a wide range of both story and non-story based games so both sides are happy

I don't really have a problem with it, I just think it's weird that he's being all uppity like he cracked the code before everyone else. I think that's dumber than what Maddox is doing, and I think Maddox is dumb in this situation. That would be like if Filthy Frank made a video that sucked and I went in and said, "I guess people are finally seeing things from the right point of view: mine." That's pompous.
