These are usually in the Mesosphere and stretch out for 50-200km, i think. One thing i don't think ill ever see in my lifetime is an ELVES. Yes, that is an acronym for a discharge that is several thousand km across and is only visible for 1ms, and is hardly even visible at all.
Probably the coolest lightning strike i've seen was when i was directly under it, i dont even know why i was outside in a thunderstorm but it was just in mid air, went directly sideways. Wasn't even connected to a cloud, or at least a visible one. It looked like there was a crack in the sky and a rift to another dimension was opening or something.
