who is the voice actor? dude sounds like master chief :v:
It sounds like Bateson at times
That character looks a lot like Max Payne with that beard.
They need to do Shadow over Innsmouth.
They need to do Shadow over Innsmouth.
That's essentially what Dark Corners of The Earth is tho
They need to do Shadow over Innsmouth.
Bloodbornes' The Old Hunters DLC is pretty damn close to Shadow over Inssmouth
Oh god oh man this has potential.
"Nothing extraordinary about the Hawkins case... At least, that's what I thought."
Cliche opening monologue.
Calling Cthulhu "he."
fuckin implying
"I have to stop it."
You're not going to stop it. Nobody ever stops it. Conclusion: Sorry Mario, our Lovecraft is in another franchise.
Bloodbornes' The Old Hunters DLC is pretty damn close to Shadow over Inssmouth
I think they did a good job of translating that story into 'souls' style game play.
[hd]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHbuE7rbDzs[/hd]
Got a real original Alone in the Dark vibe from this. If we got something like that I'll be happy.
Man Dark Corners of The Earth was such a dope game. despite its clunky gameplay it will remain one of the most memorable experiences to me. I have a feeling this won't be good but I have high hopes.
Cliche opening monologue. fuckin implying You're not going to stop it. Nobody ever stops it. Conclusion: Sorry Mario, our Lovecraft is in another franchise.
Plenty of Lovecraft characters attempt to thwart the goings-on and fail to a degree or merely postpone the inevitable, there's nothing to say this one wont either especially not from the first trailer for the game.
HP does an amazing job at portraying characters slowly going insane. the best example is the tomb [sp] which is about a boy being infatuated about a tomb near his house, eventually believing hallucinations that he is a reincarnation of a person who was supposed to be buried in the tomb[/sp] the only game that captures going towards madness completely is blooborne or maybe eternal darkness.
developers made that Game of Thrones videogame.
Ohhhhhhhhh. :C
I really want to get Dark Corners of the Earth, but with all the crashing it has on PC, I'm unsure. I know I would enjoy the game, but are there enough fixes and workarounds to assure I won't have to rip my hair out? I would be getting the Steam version and going from there.
Huh, difficult to pull off. If i had to make a judgement based on this trailer (which is stupid to do to begin with), I'd say there is nothing that demonstrates that the material is handled particularly well. On the contrary, I don't think it would be a good choice to make the end of mankind the main threat like the narration suggests (which could have nothing to do with the actual game to begin with). It would actually be a sign of a tremendous failure to understand the central plot elements of Lovecraft's writing. Everything is centered about the protagonist and his perception of events, not some global threat that might bring about the end of the world. His stories work because we are right there with the main character, locked in his mind as he is being tormented with unfathomable terror and foreboding dread. Then there is the monsters. Just the fact that there are generic "monster"-monster looking creatures is not a good sign to me. Most creatures in lovecraft lore are more of a shapeless embodiment of terror and the creatures he does describe in detail are incredibly intricate and creative, not some generic humanoid with a weird monster face slapped on. But then again, the trailer is not much to go by. It doesn't even have gameplay and it might just be a result of marketing being dipshits. I did actually like Dark corners of the Earth, for different reasons. For starters, it showed that the devs had read enough stories to have a comprehensive understanding of the Lovecraft universe, enough to bring different elements together and to render them in pretty loving detail. It had awful gameplay and massive technical problems but it felt like something made by a fan of the short stories. Maybe this will too, who knows at this point...
I thought Cthulhu specifically was worshipped by fish-like monsters that mated with female humans to give birth to more fish-like monsters? And I'm pretty sure Cthulhu awaking from his slumber is a global threat even if the initial awakening isn't a global crisis to start. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see a hack and slash game where NPC's are telling you the world is going to end if you don't defeat X boss. But the point of the cosmic horror that is the ancient ones and their minions isn't that they're shapeless, but that trying to comprehend them leads to insanity. Also, I wish the game was about the blind idiot god instead. I suppose cthulhu is much more well known though.
Wasnt this part specifically dagon? cthulhu's story had cults from around the world and people getting bizzare dreams As far as i can remember.
The Shadow over Innsmouth is what I was referring to. I don't know how the cults all over the world worked. Innsmouth is just the most memorable for me, which is the dagon cult I think? So you're probably right.
Generally speaking it's REALLY been hard for movies and video games to really portray Lovecraft that well. We have attempted and references and "Lovecraftian Horror" but actually adapting Lovecraft's works itself is tricky.
here, let me prove you wrong this entire video game lol [editline]11th June 2016[/editline] directly adapting lovecraftian horror does not work, derivations are the best way to go and really no game has accomplished it that well other than a 2d xcom-like

Cthulhu is just some cough potato in an underwater city waiting for the right time to wake up and fuck shit up.

What's with all the praise for Dark Corners of The Earth? The Sneaking sections were poor, the shooting awful.
Lovecraft's work is much better suited to more subtle, "Walking simulator" type horror games. The Color out of Space would make a fantastic game, it doesn't need shotguns and gruff action man trying to save the world. Although there are some pretty badass novels where the protagonists decide to fuck shit up, I forget the name of it but particularly the one where a band goes out with shotguns to stop some ritual after they're fed up with things getting fucked up.
The thing with Lovecraft is that it's hard to adapt to a visual medium. Indescribable horror and inconceivable shapes work in text, but how do you translate that to a video game in a way that's still scary?
What's with all the praise for Dark Corners of The Earth? The Sneaking sections were poor, the shooting awful.
We are not praising the gameplay, we are praising the design and story telling
What's with all the praise for Dark Corners of The Earth? It did the whole no hud thing really well and the fact that all the guns were quite slow made the shooting parts feel very survival horror-y.

It works though because it's their own Lovecraftian Horror/Horrors. And a version of Lovecraftian Horror that's written and designed to fit the gameplay of Bloodborn as well as it's lore without issues. The issues rise up the moment someone tries to adapt Lovecraft's actual work to the letter.
The only acceptable action game based on a Lovecraftian setting would if they adapted Old Man Henderson. That's the only acceptable way to do it
The only acceptable action game based on a Lovecraftian setting would if they adapted Old Man Henderson. That's the only acceptable way to do it
it doesn't happen often but there are a few explicit mentions of Z-tier monster mooks that can be killed by humans, probably enough to make up an action game. the Deep Ones get raided by the military; Henry Akely shoots and kills a Mi-Go and gets in a shootout with their human servants, and it's even said that a well-armed group of humans could probably kill all the Mi-Go in the area; and if you REALLY wanted to push it you could have Elder Thing weaponry show up, which is apparently strong enough to fight the Star-Spawn of Cthulhu to a standstill. obviously this would be a really dumb change in tone but action is kind of doable in the setting
