GMOD 2009 - it feels like a lifetime ago I was playing this every day

Nox teamplay and melon racer were the shit.

Even crazier is when you discover the creator of this video passed away :(

I started playing in gmod 9 when all you COULD do was build (although not very well back then) and I thought it was the coolest shit. Then took a BIG hiatus shortly after gmod 13 came out and when I came back about 2 years ago the gmod playerbase was NOTHING like what I knew and bought the game for.
Must be what prison inmates feel like after getting out for 20+ years.
I tried to join a simple build server and it was an awful time.
too many people take gmod so god damn seriously
I remember making boats and tanks and setting the weight to max so that anything it touches gets INSTANTLY disintegrated
everyone had incredible fun and it was the best time
that's what a sandbox game should be about. Dicking around without even using your head. Just having fun.
the murder game mode though is insanely fun. Everyones just mutually joking around and killing each other.

i got back into gmod for a couple of days because of that gamemode. i'd found a server using cs_office and a whole bunch of funny lads playing around and stabbing eachother and shooting and laughing about it. pure innocent video game fun.
reading this thread invokes a strong, nostalgic sad feeling. i think back to before i was an "adult" (See: Responsibilities / growing up) and all I did was play gm_construct and gm_flatgrass, building helicopters and boats and sb_gooniverse making life-supported space ships and just flying in space for hours on end. I have several thousand hours of GMod playtime, but almost none in the last few years.
It's sad for me when I watch old classic GMod videos like GMod Idiot Box Source Wars or Idiots of GMod or other silly stuff. even War of the Servers makes me tear up inside because I find myself thinking, "I want to go back to when the world didn't suck" or "I wish I had the same quality of coping mechanisms as I did in my youth" - I think back to simpler times, mainly.
What happened?
I pretty much spent 600 of the near thousand hours playtime in gmod shooting combine with customizable weaponry :v:
I think that let's play youtubers killed the game, because let's be honest if they hadn't made videos on GMOD, than the server list wouldn't be clogged with TTT and RP severs.
I joined FP just to say how much I loved the Stargate addon.
I'll never forget the time I finally figured out how to install addons. I think it was some kind of military vehicle pack.
I've been playing this game for literally a decade almost every day, and it still enthralls me.

10k hours holy fuck

Some people like to say that let's players saved the game and brought new blood to the community but I always thought that was a crock of shit. I thought the influx of new players was great too until I realized that many of them were only interested in emulating what people did youtube instead of being creative and doing their own thing. Like when sandbox servers were suddenly sort of popular again (for a short while) after The Yogscast built their own Star Wars pod racers in one of their streams, but only because people just wanted to build them too.
It never felt right to me.

Even though the player base is drastically different I would rather the game still have life in it because maybe someday we will see a resurgence in sandbox building gmod is the kind of game that is so good (even with all its flaws and engine limitations) that it doesnt deserve to die.
GMOD was my first real PC game and is pretty much responsible for getting me into PC gaming single-handedly.
Nearly 10 years ago, a bit under half my life ago.

I can see where you're coming from with TTT, but how the hell is a let's player supposed to make Gmod RP look appealing?
Seeing these response make me kinda regret that i doesn't know gmod on its golden age.
I used to have a "No Bronies" build server(for shits) that was super popular during the beta of gmod 10?? maybe 11. Someone made a video documenting the horror when a brony would join the server, would do things similar to OP. But I guess it got deleted off youtube and the FPer here didn't have a backup ;( People would rename themselves pony names just to be part of the festivities.
Fuck this was almost 5 years ago.

I remember when gmod 10 was still really new I impressed a server owner with a prop trick in a house I built so much that he made me a admin.
It was literally just a prop you could use the material tool on and make it a sort of one way window, but his mind was blown so deeply he thought I was manipulating the game code in front of his eyes. Now it's been so long I'd be surprised if every quirk and trick in the book isn't used by every kid on every Dark RP server. Does anyone remember when you could crash any server by welding an engine to the ground?
My favourite type of admin warning tool was one i remember on an RP server, basically it would freeze the offending player in a bent over position and DR.Hax would appear behind them and boot them flying.....shit was hilarious.
Melonbrew, PHW, Teamplay and old school Zombie Survival those were the days.
I remember some of the first real friends I made online were in a podunk little Zombie Survival server. No addons, no mods, just CS:S and HL2 weapons with the stock standard HL2 zombie classes. It was a wonderful time and I'll never forget it.
I don't remember their names, I don't know where they went, but I'll always cherish sitting down as little me and playing and laughing for hours on end.

I remember Wiremod 1.0 crashing servers when you used a divide gate to divide by zero. :v:
I remember the release day on Gmod 10 and when we were on a server and I kept pissing Dav0r off by slowly inching in a static model of a man standing into his view while he was doing shit. We also drew tons of shit with the rope-tool. :v:
I feel unbelievably depressed when I recall all of this, it was simply a better time.
remember we were all kids, of course it's gonna seem like a better time
(though it totally fuckin was)
Gmod 9 best Gmod. When the toolgun was the crossbow and thrusters were just tin cans that turned white when they were on. Back when if you wanted to download mods you just downloaded the lua file off of fp.net or whatever instead of all this toybox bologna
[editline]11th March 2017[/editline]
also making traps by welding a big container to a glass bottle so whenever someone walked on the bottle and broke it they would be crushed. classic
spacebuild was THE shit and if you disagree get the hell out of my face
Why isn't this a standalone game yet
Why isn't this a standalone game yet
Space Engineers and its ilk are kind of like it.
We should all play together
Some of my most memorable experiences with garry's mod was on popular build servers and the official wiremod server.
Back when PHX was new and E2 was still this in-development amazing thing. Shit, I still remember using E1 with that awful "editor" :scream:.
I watched countless youtube tutorials on building suspensions by abusing the physics of elastic and ropes.
Space Engineers and its ilk are kind of like it.
Its a decent substitute but that's all it is, a substitute.
Ideally a game that is mostly like gmod but has map sizes similar to space engineers and doesnt run like shit when several players are doing stuff would be great.
Wasnt there talk about garry making a gmod successor with source 2 because that would be great.
