Does anyone remember SGC's Naval Play server?
spacebuild was THE shit and if you disagree get the hell out of my face
I wish some people could come together and actually get a Spacebuild revival finished. I'd totally lend a hand at modelling stuff.
GMod was one of the things that got me into PC gaming and the thing that guided me here. If that 'GMod 2' project ever comes to fruition, that'd be great- as many great addons as there are, there's a charm to the vanilla experience, and a clean slate would be wonderful.
basebuilding
I remember absolutely loving playing on build servers purely to fuck around and showcase my stuff, always played on the d3vine build server too, shame there aren't any good build servers anymore.
Anyone remember mingebots?
Not sure what the gamemode was called anymore (I think Onslaught), but you had a to build a base then hold off against multiple waves of npc's, that was a lot of fun.
Smoke gmod every day
I hate nostalgia I want to go back to those times but I can't :frown:
Remember lads, "Don't be sad that it's over, be happy that it happened".
I remember setting up listen servers in Gmod 9.0.4 when I was like 13 and abusing the shit out of my admin powers [editline]12th March 2017[/editline] oh dear god
I'm still kinda sad that I missed the biggest gamemodes of gmod, despite getting it in January of 2009. Back then all I did was make massive AI battles on gm_hugeflatconstruct and gm_bigcity. I didn't even get into spacebuild until the end of that year, and I still never really figured out how to do any of the cool shit. I remember my shitty celeron PC taking a good half hour to load flatgrass with the sheer number of addons I had, and being genuinely nostalgic back then while clearing that addons folder out. And now I haven't touched the game in nigh-on five or six years.
Fuck your nostalgia, it's all about gm_hugeflatmap_v4 and wood wars, fuckers
gmod 8.4 baby I remember playing the first TTT version in early gmod 9. And fight to survive in gmod 9. Spacebuild during that was great too. [BB] RP was pretty good. Than perp happened 3 years later. It had a good 6 month period before it became a shit fest. The original Zs was fun but it peaked in 2012 in my opinion. and the HG Zs server can still be good. Pretty much Gmod 9 was the pinnacle of Gmod in terms of innovation and community. Making shitty gmod videos and having a wank war with all the other 13 year olds in the movie section is a mark of my adolescence.
The first thing I ever did on this forum was make a post where I begged for someone to make a modern house map that didn't use CS:S textures/models, because my parents wouldn't allow me to play CS due to the fear of me becoming a terrorist or something. [t]https://i.gyazo.com/a09d126eb120e87ea286ca0b7f979270.png[/t] good times.
The first video I ever favorited on YouTube
Not sure what the gamemode was called anymore (I think Onslaught), but you had a to build a base then hold off against multiple waves of npc's, that was a lot of fun.
Hello, it's me, the asshole who always rushed to get the pulse machine gun that spawned on the edge of the map at the beginning of each round.
This game was the reason I joined, I used to bum around the models section and beg for models. Then I started enjoying actual gamemodes, and then other games. I try picking it up here and there but I can't find any multiplayer that isn't full of kids.
i stopped building when the community i was part of died years ago. nowadays i only use GMod to make artwork.
Honestly I still do not feel done with it even remotely. Even if MP Sandbox is sort of dead at the moment, it's always possible to just build things. It was mentioned in an earlier thread that Sandbox may have died because of a few specific things, the UI feels too serious and the environments feel too clean. The presence of wiremod and precise props may have also fucked things up. In essence Sandbox could be revived if everything was simplified again, maybe have some kind of a "nested gmod 9" inside of the current version to make it feel more like that. The game could be launched with "vanilla" mode by default, and the advanced mode could be the one to contain all of the current stuff. Basically, the UI is not supposed to feel like Phothoshop. Gmod 9's Physgun smoothness also played a huge as fuck role probably.
I remember that really simple dogfight mode with the airboats with wings. I was so good at that
I remember that really simple dogfight mode with the airboats with wings. I was so good at that
I tried making them after seeing War of the Servers, but while it was visually correct, I could never get it to fly the way I wanted it to.

However, since I've been using GMod for 8 years, I can safely say that GM13 from a technical and modification stand point is much better than the GMod from years ago. The experience of finding new and innovative ways to build back in 2005-2009 and the overall simplicity of the game (and the fact that GMod wasn't a Let's Player's go to game) is probably the reason we look at it with such rose-tinted glasses, because after all, we were all younger and things were just more fun. If you people are interested in what the sandbox community is doing nowadays, we have the WIP thread over in the screenshots subforum https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1545627&page=22
spacebuild was THE shit and if you disagree get the hell out of my face
SB is probably around 90% of my playtime.
I joined FP just to say how much I loved the Stargate addon. I'll never forget the time I finally figured out how to install addons. I think it was some kind of military vehicle pack.
Heh, fun story, Stargate addon was the reason I bought the game because it did not work properly on the cracked ones at the time.

I mostly meant it in the sense that the current "goodness" of gmod is exactly why sandbox is dead to begin with. When its capabilities became that of frugal Blender, a sense of spontaneity was removed. There is this subconscious pressure to make something professional, there needs to be a renewed "make a random pile of shit" feeling
Anything newer than this version of construct still feels like the new generation of gmod to me.

Back in the day all the gmod vids were of people building shit and showing off crazy contraptions. But now all we get are the rp, ttt, ect videos and those videos draw in those kinds of players. The few new gmod sandbox building videos are mostly high level stuff that a new player is not gonna be able to do. If more simplistic building youtube videos came out and they got enough views you would see an influx of new gmod "builders". gotta remember gmod has NO advertising so whatever people see on youtube is what they are gonna buy the game for.
I miss the days of freespace03 and 06. It was an amazing game that got so much out of it, it's bittersweet to see how all of it has gone away (like fortwars) or evolved into what ever it is now (gmod tower/tower unite.)
Melonbrew, PHW, Teamplay and old school Zombie Survival those were the days.
Bloody hell, I remember Melonbrew. Used to frequent that server so often, remember there being an odd transition when Gmod 10 was released. I should know every vertex in rp_oviscity by now. JokerIce was amazing as well, spent a lot of time there.. I've been thinking back on how much time I spent on Gmod as a kid / teen, and been getting so nostalgic. Gotta thank Wiremod and Expression 2 for putting me into a computer science related degree!

I wonder how hard it is to change the spawn menu back as well
Depending on how hard it is to limit all the new props I'm totally down to run a server like this. I wonder how hard it is to change the spawn menu back as well
You can create your own spawn menu rather easily using just Lua and Derma(IIRC?) since all of the spawning functions are hard coded into GMod(IIRC). I recall there being customized spawn menus on garrysmod.org back in the day
