I think it was less "mature" and more "grand" or "epic"; it kinda reminds me of the vibe/aesthetic they were going for with Brawl, if that makes sense.

lol People said the same thing for Bayonetta and look at what happened. Hell, she's probably more of a "hard M rated" character than Doomguy is.
TBH I'd rather have Travis Touchdown before Doomguy, now that No More Heroes is back. The only problem is that he'd be yet another sword-wielding character in a roster already crammed with so many of them.
I have been holding onto my Wii U for weekly smash tournaments and travelling with it to regional smash events. I'm going to be so glad to finally put it to to rest in a cupboard somewhere, because I actually use the Switch most days.
Very excited, even more so that it is coming this year

While Doomguy is my top pick overall there are so many other third-party characters I'd like to see in Smash. For example, Travis Touchdown like you mentioned, but also Crash, Banjo and Kazooie, Bomberman, Fulgore, the list goes on.

What's better PR than having their flagship character in the most popular video game crossover of all time?
I don't think we'll get Snake since that was mostly due to Kojima and Sakurai being tight but still.
i wonder when they will start catering to the melee crowd. its a crowd bigger than smash 4 but nintendo just wants to ignore that they exist. Hopefully this game appeals to melee players
Honestly with not even a title beyond the basics, but the showing of what seem to be only veterans besides the Inklings and the style it's going for from what's there in the teaser (including the classic letter appearing style), I almost feel like this is going to be sort of a series reboot. Dunno why.
With how short dev time they had between now and Smash 4, pretty sure it's going to use the last game's engine as a base. To cut on dev time and rework or add things on top.
That or they'll start with a smaller roster and add on over time to keep the interest strong. The reason I speculated that is because I'm super surprised to see Smash be teased this early. It's barely been a year for the Switch so if the game really is scheduled within this year, they definitely would have worked like madmen on it or they cut stuff so that they can spread it.
Brawl and Wii U entries were system sellers. They appear later in the console's cycle which I thought it's what they'd do to give the Switch a boost when sales would be slowing down. I wasn't expecting Smash to even be teased before 2019 or 2020. So I really wanna see what they are going to do with the game.
If this is more of a 100% "Smash 5" deal with no trace of the last entry in it (or very little reused), then holy fucking balls! E3 will definitely going to be very interesting this year.
