This looks like absolute garbage. Problems that I see so far:
Light's casting - Light is supposed to be handsome, and more importantly, well-groomed. It's part of his meticulous attention to detail. His appearance is critical to his ability to manipulate others. Part of the reason Light is so arrogant is that he's a good-looking, high-achieving genius. Why did they hire an average looking actor? What the fuck is with the shitty blond highlights? The uncombed hair? Why is Light letting his unwashed hair hang in his face while L isn't?
L's casting - I'd actually care much less if Light was played a black actor than if L was. L's aesthetic was a critical part of his character, probably more so than other character on the show. He's extremely pale because he barely ever goes outside. He has dark under-eye circles because he's up all night. His hair is messy and hangs in his face because personal grooming doesn't matter to him.
Action shots - Why is Light being chased down a dark alley? Why are amusement park rides falling over? I'm very concerned that Netflix felt the need to turn a psychological thriller into an action film. Because surely, North American audiences' attention spans could not accommodate anything else. If that's the case, you can bet this is going to be shit sandwich.
Don't expect this to be anything like the manga/anime and you'll probably be much less disappointed.
I don't mean to be 'that guy', but the second half of the original series that everyone complains about was a lot better in the manga. More fleshed out, better explained. The anime spent too much time making the first half a near-perfect adaptation (on top of wasting half an episode on L fanservice that wasn't in the manga), so they had to make a lot of cuts to the second half.
A lot of people disliked Near/Mello in both versions, which I understand too. But they're better characters in the manga, at least in my opinion. I wonder if this movie will even bother with them at all. The Japanese movies skipped them, in favor of [sp]L faking his death and circumventing Light's attempt by writing his own name in the Death Note but with his death date drawn out to the max, thus giving him enough time to finish off Light while he was still alive.[/sp] I personally liked that solution a lot.

probably gonna be an adaptation like The man in the high castle. I prefer those adaptations anyway, especially of something from manga
can't imagine it'll be great
the director is Adam Wingard (the guest, you're next) and willem dafoe is ryuk
i don't see this being anything other than excellent

that spoiler sounds so much better. Hopefully they take that route in the netflix version. Also hope the actors are really good too. Guess it depends on audience reaction to the acting to see where they go if they do make a part 2 or something.

a collection of not great films (but still good) where he wasn't relying on a manga as source material. i'll be impressed if this is actually great, not saying it can't be.

if you're talking shit on The Guest or You're Next it will not stand
Why is he calling himself "kira" when that was like a Japanese pun on the English word "killer"?
if you're talking shit on The Guest or You're Next it will not stand
i don't think you're next is very special and my focus is more on the blair witch remake-thing he just did which you'd be hard pressed to say stands up to the original.

You're Next was ok but not excellent lmao
haven't seen the guest tho but ima give it a try

I was going to mention the ending of the movies as well, I actually prefer that to how the Manga/Anime ends.
Why is he calling himself "kira" when that was like a Japanese pun on the English word "killer"?
That was the biggest thing bothering me in the trailer honestly, even more than the casting and other shit.
There's so much in Death Note that's unequivocally Japanese, like Light saying "My name comes from an English word meaning 'Light'" or "They came up with the name 'Kira' based on the English word for 'Killer'". I remember there also being some plot point later on about how nobody outside the police force really owns a gun, since it's Japan, and that is ABSOLUTELY not true in America. If they want to move the story outside of Japan, fine, but don't hold that death grip on the strictly-Japanese aspects of the story.
So many people seem to find Death Note so compelling, I wish new directors would just try to do something new with the same source material. Like keep the plot device of the Death Note itself, but don't necessarily keep re-hashing the same story of Light and L, maybe tell a new story with different characters. For the sake of a movie, I don't think they even need to include Shinigami shit, because that just adds in even more rules, complications, plot devices, and fantasy shit. For just one movie they don't need to delve into all kinds of lore about who made Death Notes and where they came from and why and all that. Just use it as a unique horror/thriller movie plot device.

Neither of those are standout movies. They're enjoyable, yeah, but nothing to write home about or watch more than once
But why am I even replying to Rusty regarding movies
Why is he calling himself "kira" when that was like a Japanese pun on the English word "killer"?
Maybe he's a massive weeb.
willem dafoe as ryuk is one of the greatest casting choices ever
The amount of people calling out this movie for "whitewashing" on Twitter is baffling.

they're both incredible horror/thriller films, that is fine you do not think that i guess. but the guest is especially outstanding.
[editline]23rd March 2017[/editline]
i think it's a masterpiece.
I kinda agree but -DEATH NOTE SPOILERS- [sp]the reason for the blue balling ending is pretty clear imo. You play with death, you better be smarter than those who want to live.In the end Light just got outsmarted p. much.[/sp]
I somewhat disagree with that reasoning for the ending.
[sp]It sucks because Light really isn't outsmarted. *I guess* you could say him placing trust in a peon was a dumb move, but ultimately his minion fucking up is what gets him killed. It was a cop-out in the same way it would have been super fucking lame if Watari or some other minion of L gave up his identity stupidly.[/sp]
Having a story that's mano a mano through and through only for some lame side character to cause one of them to be victorious is just an outright lame way to end it.
That's good. Adapting anime to movie format is hard as is. Toro's not really good enough to pull it off well.
1) Disagree
2) If any anime could be adapted into live action it is Monster. The subject matter is grounded in reality and the anime is 1:1 with the manga, not a single line is cut.

lmao Monster is probably one of the easiest things to adapt to a live-action adaptation since its basically just a normal drama but someone decided to make it an anime instead of a live action TV series

Yeah it is the least anime anime of all time
I somewhat disagree with that reasoning for the ending.

[sp]Well, what you said there is the answer. It's Light's own fault for betting everything on a delusional minion, and he lost. L was smarter in that regard because his only close friend was someone he had trusted deeply his entire life. Watari would sooner off himself as part of a contingency plan than give up L's identity.
By the ending, Light was already on his third or fourth backup escape plan anyway. He had been running from L pretty much the entire time, and Near and Mello finally cornered him. It's not just Mikami's fuckups that caused Light to fall, it was the long string of mistakes Light made, starting at the beginning when he was still new to being Kira and killing as many people as he could.[/sp]
At least it's not the Zac Efron version? It might not be good, but I'm hoping if it turns out to be crap, it turns into one of those so-bad-its-good films.

I agree with you on Light's casting. Light seeming so perfect on the outside is part of what made him so manipulative.
The dude in the trailer straight up looks like a school shooter already.

Honestly Zac Efron isn't even that bad of an actor. Although he does more comedy than serious.

I don't think he's a bad actor and he could have done a fine job but we'll never know. It's just that when he was being considered, he was at the height of his popularity with teen girls and i think the studio would have changed stuff to aim it at a younger (possibly female) audience.
