Don't tack the HL name on something that clearly isn't just so you can get hype for your video
At least Escape From City 17 actually, you know, reflected the true HL universe

Shame they shut down
itt stuck up posters complaining that they took artistic freedom in their own film they paid for and spent time on
This is as artistically free as Uwe Boll films
I think it was well made. I didn't notice any mistakes from a film-making standpoint. It was pretty good visually, and I the sound track was also well done.
However, If it was supposed to be in the "Half Life World" They should have, say, I don't know, made it replicate the Half Life World. The Combine costumes could have been better, but I'll let that slide due to the budget. But as stated before, The Hologram transmitter did not fit. The rebels had very little technology, and the most the would have had is the radios seen in game. Also Zombies, as with the Combine, Costumes are not easy to make, especially with a budget like theirs, I feel it would have been better if they at least ACTED like Headcrab zombies. The sword fight has already been discussed.
Overall, 7/10
Wasn't bad, but I don't think the rebels would have access to that type of technology like the watch.
I thought they got the atmosphere, sound and the weapons spot on (except for the katana), and yes i understand they are on a budget, but the rest of...well everything was just flat out unimpressive.
You would have thought being trained in the military he would pretty much fight in the style of kick boxing rather than bullshit pseudo ninjitsu.
I could never take the guy playing Adrian seriously, I mean common he looks like a skinny bitch.
This is Shephard.

Look at this tough mother fucker. [sp]He is not amused[/sp]
Run. Fat boy. Run.
It was okay. I do wish we could have a proper half-life movie. It'd probably be best not centered on Gordon, because they'd probably fuck him up badly.
I thought it was good, albeit really damn goofy. I mean, it was fun to watch. The only things that really got me were the fat asian guy and the duel.
The asian guy just seemed so out of place compared to the other two. I had to laugh too at the Hollywoodism with the whole main character and girl last ones left and, had this been an actual movie, a romance between them. (As an aside: is it just me or was the guy who played Shepard smiling through half the film). Some of the acting (or choreography) was kind of goofy as well. For instance, the way the CP protection would move or skulk was kind of silly.
Now I just lost track of whatever else I was going to say. So, I will just say; I thought it was good, some things I am fickle about, but overall it was fun to watch.
L4D zombies, shitty power rangers-esque combat (Combine overwatch soldiers are brainwashed enough to understand the concept of "Bullets instead of hand to hand combat"), and the ending was kinda too sad. Plus when was there a portable holographic console, ever in HL2? And hell, even if there was the rebels wouldn't have access to them.
But i fucking love that medikit prop.

I hope VALVe makes something like that. For a smal emont of emone.
But, did anybody else thing the ending was retarded?
":downs: Let's approach the guy with the big ass red light of a grenade under him"
-Last words of Downsbine #1334354
You could, like throw the grenade, so the scatter and are in confusion, and use that moment to run, but whatever. It even looks like that Downsbine squad could have been easily avoided, but meh.
Fat chinese kid ruined the whole video for me.
The combine masks were the hardest thing to look at.
I mean what the fuck is this: [img_thumb]http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/images/10/july/bbm.jpg[/img_thumb]
The movie effects were pretty darn good, however.
Whats even more annoying? The metro cop hlemet is designed after a real gasmask i think.
Oh, and thats not adrian, not by a long shot, i dont think "Skinny kung fu pretty boy" equals "Merciless Marine gunman who engages in a lot of physical excersise daily".
It wasn't bad, but certainly not what I expected. It could have been better. The zombies seemed more Left 4 Dead then Half-Life, and the whole ninja-moves thing Adrian had going seemed more Metal Gear then Half-Life. The effects and props were pretty good, but the masks seemed a little ridiculous.
i would like to see valve make a shooting game that has parkour like in Mirrors Edge
Well the film IS called "Beyond Black Mesa"*cough coughuniversecough*
asian guy made it unimmersive as fuck
do you see fat people in the HL universe? no because the human race is enslaved and there probably is a limited supply of food

As stated previously, He clearly was stealing food rations.
i didn't like it

thyroid problem
Only thing I didn't like was the fast-zombies being headcrab-less; kinda' pointless.
Also, I'd have preferred an actual story as opposed to some kind of visual/narrative generality. Also, I'm pretty sure the Combine either see humanity as a nuisance or a commodity, not as a "self-destructive" whatever, like it says here. The Combine have strip-mined the planet and have been stealing the oceans; I doubt they had any opinions about our collective environmentalism or capacity to make war.
Also, I'm guessing they gave the soldiers G3 rifles because that's the closest you're going to get to an AR2 without custom-building a prop. In fact, I'm pretty sure the AR2 IS a modified HK-G3, in essentials...
I like how a guy who fought through hell in Black Mesa and killed this thing:

figures suicide is a better option than facing a platoon of soldiers. :downs:
The grenade wasn't even close enough to kill more than one or two of them. What a waste, he could at least have ran into the middle of them, grenade hoisted high above his head. But no, he just dropped it on the ground so it could roll even further away from them.
As a movie itself, this was pretty well done. As a tribute to the fans from the fans, this was pretty angering to say the least.
- L4D zombies (what the actual fuck?)
- Ninja fight (what)
- Wrong gas mask even though the one that's used in the games is a real gas mask and actually widely available (as said before this shit matters to a fan)
- Fat asian dude (how did he survive that long)
- Annoying ending (shephard kills himself :silent:)
I mean yeah, most of was really cool but other than that it didn't feel like Half-Life as it should've. It felt more like a movie with Half-Life easter eggs.

Oh look guys, I had it bookmarked.

The fuck? i understand there budget and all but what the fuck
They could've spent the money making the zombies alone to make a much better headcrab zombie. I mean, fuck, they could've just ripped the model itself and put it in the game, I would respect that more.
Not saying it's not a good zombie, in any other film that would've been perfect but it's not Half-Life.
It was way too flashy for my taste, I guess it was good in terms of visual effects, but it was in no way a half-life film.
I'm just gonna make a list.
Atmosphere
While there was atmosphere present in the film, it wasn't "half-life atmosphere". All the HD camera tricks they used to color the world around the characters was really unfitting and I disliked it. I guess the atmosphere would've been more noticeable if the film wasn't so fast paced with gunshots and running the entire time.
I mean what I've always noticed in Half-life was the visuals, everything was so vivid and it seemed that every single prop in a map had a story behind it. The camera constantly shaking made it so I couldn't notice these things. And all that technology they used seemed almost too high-tech. And how the camera would always stay on the characters instead of looking at the environment really detracted from the atmosphere.
Visuals
It kind of goes hand-in-hand with the atmosphere. HL2 had very bleak environments, but it was an emotional bleakness. the kind that caused sadness looking at it. The colors in the movie were very saturated and bright and didn't convey much emotion. Things were too dramatic, such as the smoke, explosions and blood splatters. And I didn't like how the health vials, flares, lights, etc. were neon colored. It just doesn't make much sense to me. Basically what I'm getting at is that it was all too saturated and overly dramatic, and was very unfitting to be considered a Half-life film, even though it's just fanmade.
Plot
It was a really simple plot, with little thought. They tried very little to convey the backstory of the whole Half-life universe, I couldn't really a sense what was going on because it was all so fast paced. The fact they had no dialogue in it only made it worse. It's clear they spend more on the visuals than the plot itself. It bugged me to see these obvious little plot holes constantly throughout the film. Like, why the hell did the combine have a katana? I mean the combine could've easily just shot the motherfucker. Why were the health vials neon? Where were the goddamn headcrabs? When the woman comes running from the zombies, why did they hardly react to it? The zombies are also what bugged me, they didn't even seem like L4D zombies, more like I am Legend zombies. It's these small things that really bugged me and I could hardly enjoy watching it.
I don't really know what to rate it because, whenever I see a film, I look for the atmosphere and plot rather than the explosions and adrenaline. In terms of visual effects, it was a great film. However it was in no way the half-life universe as it was too flashy for my taste.
I wanted more than just dialogue from one character and gunfights. I'm disappointed that it didn't live up to it's hype, but it was enjoyable.
So many scenes just like ruined it for me. The choreography was awful.
Why couldn't they just make a generic sci-fi movie? It could have stood on its own if they didn't try to pretend it was Half-Life. Sword fights? Rage virus? Holograms? HIPSTER MARINES??? This isn't the Half-Life I know and love.
Also, I think it would be much more manageable to do a fan film based off of the original Half-Life. Much more contemporary setting and characters.
Why can't you guys just sit there and enjoy the goddamn movie
