As far as "Oh he'll have to pay for that" goes, all the schools I went to let you keep the textbook if they were getting new ones in next year (which is rare, but it happens). That particular book is a 2007 copy so his school very well may have recently just ordered new ones.
Either way he's dumb for trying to be badass about it.

Still, most schools don't go easy on ripping books up. My school still has textbooks from the 90's, which is odd.
Just fyi guys, old textbooks like that are pretty easy to get from non-schools. Garage sales and public libraries sell these things for nearly nothing
