all in all i think we should sit back and appreciate the cheesy 80s "to sell toys" cartoon tone and the production values and not over-analyze the story and writing of a cartoon video game with a talking gorilla in it thanks for killing my automerge buddy
I thought A76's voice acting wasn't terrible. Generic action hero sure, but not nearly as bad as TRAYSAH HEAH or lé wídówmákéur
Soldier: 76 is grizzled Awesome. Widowmaker is LITERALLY METZEN'S SAME CHICK!
I'd like to see a Mercy short. I wonder if they are doing all of them or just the 'main' ones
Wtf are the main ones? If we're saying characters at the forefront of he lore it's kind of surprising we got a Hanzo and are getting a D.Va short. If anything we'd be super likely to get a Mercy short, right after a Reaper and a McCree one.

IIRC they haven't announced or alluded to any of the shorts following this one.
Whoops my bad for some reason I coulda sworn someone said dva was next, either way we haven't really had 'main' heroes and mercy is absolutely on the cards for a short.

They all play out like big-budget toy commercials, except it's for a video game that has all of the toys packaged for $60. I felt that this one was the weakest in hiding the fact that Blizzard's trying to sell you something. Hell we got giant toys appearing in random locations! This is some Transformers/Hasbro advertisement shit right here! I didn't mind the previous ones, even enjoyed some of them but this was really boring and poorly written.
Forget it, I'm sorry for articulating this so badly but basically I think Overwatch has a good story, a good world and I'm at a loss as to why somebody called it a "cheesy 80s "to sell toys" cartoon" game.
Fucking racial allegories guys, seriously, fuck off with that "Overwatch's story is a joke" crap. It's got poor writers in terms of dialogue, but it's world is fucking fantastic. Nobody (except from the exceptionally stupid Anita Sarkeesian) ever said the Witcher's story shouldn't be taken seriously because it has werewolves and banshees and shit.
No no no no, im not taking it seriously because the writing is awful. ALSO, just because it has an allegory or a metaphor doesnt make it profound and deep.

No need to dumb me, the point I was making is that Overwatch has shit to say outside of "buy our shit!" and the story is there for a reason. Nobody ever accused Pixar movies of being vapid children's movies, and anyone that did is fucking braindead. Overwatch has the issue of having terrible writers for dialogue and great writers for story, that's my take anyway. The world they've made is just so great, it has so many layers, so much to say, but the way the characters talk is just so bad.

The characters have more "character" in-game than the shorts.
I thought A76's voice acting wasn't terrible. Generic action hero sure, but not nearly as bad as TRAYSAH HEAH or lé wídówmákéur
Why do people keep calling him Agent 76?
Ok, so I got home and I finally got to watch it: The writing is still just eh, it's functional, just about, but you can literally feel the script. The storytelling through animation and environment is still there though, not as great as in Alive but still there. I liked the music as well, fit the tone. Also I really want to say this to everyone going, it's just a silly toy story with a talking monkey: Fucking racial allegories guys, seriously, fuck off with that "Overwatch's story is a joke" crap. It's got poor writers in terms of dialogue, but it's world is fucking fantastic. Nobody (except from the exceptionally stupid Anita Sarkeesian) ever said the Witcher's story shouldn't be taken seriously because it has werewolves and banshees and shit. It's quite patronizing to write these things off like that when you realize that way back when we were kids we were watching Pixar movies that talked about things like racism, identity and ego.
What?
Man he has a Nolan's Batman complex there
We probably wont get a McCree short because they already did a McCree comic, but I hope Blizzard says "fuck it" and makes one anyways also Mei short pls

Omnics are discriminated against because they were brainwashed into waging war on humanity, murdered a ton of people and even though whatever was behind that got taken out and the war's over, it could still happen again.
These Overwatch animations are nice but I have a feeling they'll never live up to the Meet the Team videos, and those are from 2009.
Meet the Heavy came out in 2007 and even it is way better than these.
This is why I shouldn't hop into discussions with people I disagree with but don't have a proper argument against. Well, I've made myself look like an idiot. I enjoyed the short, won't be coming back to this thread again. :suicide:
-i'll snip it if you're snipping it- my main point was that overwatch feels disconnected in it's story compared to the gameplay and everything seems to be done for the sake of doing rather than for the sake of telling a good, thematically connected story. if the shorts were a little more lighthearted or didn't try so hard to be something they're not i'd feel much better about the writing.
We probably wont get a McCree short because they already did a McCree comic, but I hope Blizzard says "fuck it" and makes one anyways also Mei short pls
a mcree short would probably be the easiest to play into fun (if generic) tropes while still keeping it bearable
Nitpick I haven't seen mentioned yet, Soldier hobbles off with the injury from the grenade rather than using a biotic field. I know about gameplay and story segregation, but he could have used it to stabilise the wound at least.
Why do people keep calling him Agent 76?
it sounds cooler (it was actually my bad)
Soldier: 76 is grizzled Awesome. Widowmaker is LITERALLY METZEN'S SAME CHICK! Kerrigan was pre-morph but generally the Queen herself is known more to use melee. Not really emo either so much to my memory. Kerrigan is also fighting for redemption last I remember, not so much Sylvanas. Sylvanas also started as a great marksman before the skin thing, thats because she was killed and brought back. And emotionless? Sylvanas is one of the angriest characters currently in WoW, she's very vengeful. Her personality is not similar to the other 2 at all. The fact you try to group those 2 with widowmaker, and also try to give them a simple ass overview that isnt even completely accurate is upsetting as fuck lol. Please stop
This was half awesome and half awkward. Surely Blizzard can be a little bit more clever?
I don't get why they don't want to show more brutal harm towards humans in the shorts. It's a game about killing the other team, why keep these shorts so PG13?
i swear to christ i'm going to cry when the mcree video comes around and people whine and complain that it's written exactly like a cheesy western movie
With an artstyle like that they really try to go for the most heavy fucking handed tone you can get. Like jeez guys lighten up the mood and throw a few jokes around. It's a game where you have a talking monkey, a DJ, and a gamer girl in a mech suit as playable characters. I mean hell Soldier 76's entire concept was to be every trope of the generic FPS hero wrapped into one.
Felt kinda cringey.
