i swear to christ i'm going to cry when the mcree video comes around and people whine and complain that it's written exactly like a cheesy western movie
His comic was essentially that. They don't advertise the comics as much as the shorts though so people don't know about them as much.
i swear to christ i'm going to cry when the mcree video comes around and people whine and complain that it's written exactly like a cheesy western movie
see but that'd fucking work thematically because mcree is litterally out of a spaghetti western, and a spaghetti western works well in overwatch's style (lighthearted action.) these kinda videos don't work with overwatch because they're trying to overdo the action and drama, which is not what the game does at all. the game is at it's best when it's lighthearted and doesn't take itself so seriously. once it starts to accept that, then when it gets serious we can actually feel for the characters cause we've had time to bond with them.
the original short did it best for the most part. it earned itself the ability to go a bit dramatic during the action because it built the characters in the short lightheartedly, which is more appealing and made me like them more. it paced itself well. these shorts did not.
The animation quality is in par with pixar, i love it
God damn dude I don't even care how good it is or isn't I just want content to tide me over until the game releases
i swear to christ i'm going to cry when the mcree video comes around and people whine and complain that it's written exactly like a cheesy western movie
There are plenty of cheesy westerns that are bland and boring
Woah, to start: Queen of Blades isn't a marksman. Kerrigan was pre-morph but generally the Queen herself is known more to use melee. Not really emo either so much to my memory. Kerrigan is also fighting for redemption last I remember, not so much Sylvanas.
Sylvanas also started as a great marksman before the skin thing, thats because she was killed and brought back. And emotionless? Sylvanas is one of the angriest characters currently in WoW, she's very vengeful. Her personality is not similar to the other 2 at all.
The fact you try to group those 2 with widowmaker, and also try to give them a simple ass overview that isnt even completely accurate is upsetting as fuck lol. Please stop
Alright you got me.
Widowmaker still cringy as fuck.
Terrible design too.
Alright you got me.

"WHY'D YA DO IT M8?"
"BECAUSE I AM LE EVIL!!!"
Alive - 2016
I swear sometimes I think Activision is the reason Blizzards stuff has been made to appeal to the widest audience possible lately.
Alright you got me.

how is she more "cringy" than any other character in the game's cast
The animation quality is in par with pixar, i love it
Bootleg pixar.
The way the girl was animated waayyy overdone imo.
By the time I finished reading the thread I already forgot what the short was about lol
I remember Frank Castle saving a kid and cool glow in the dark tattoos. It was pretty I guess but the action was generic PG crap and writing was offensively bland. In fact, it makes me want to play the game less.

Getting more Disney Animation Studios, not so much Pixar. Watch some clips of Big Hero Six and then watch the Dragons short to get what I mean.
man do you guys remember the writing and voice acting in the DII cutscenes
jesus now that was something
a mcree short would probably be the easiest to play into fun (if generic) tropes while still keeping it bearable
an extremely gritty and dark short that's easily pushing the T rating the game has to its limit, McCree takes out an entire squad of mercenaries in cold blood and then turns to the camera and goes "WELL TAAARNATION PARDNER, THAT WAS A STICKY SITUATION WASN IT" cut to the Overwatch logo
i have never really had a major problem with any of these shorts, i don't really know why people are particularly harsh on them. my biggest problem with any of them as the one line winston said in his video "i'm not a monkey, i'm a scientist!" when in reality, he should have said "i'm not a monkey, i'm an ape!" which would've been much more clever and charming.
my expectations might just be too low, so far i've found all of them pretty entertaining. my only complaint with this one is definitely the "y-you saved me!" part! that was just way too cliche.
TF2 shorts are a good example of how shorts can be rated M without having to resort to making it really gruesome.
that's kind of subjective. having a bunch of disembodied heads on a fence (meet the soldier) and tearing off someone's rib (meet the medic) accompanied by a large cracking sound can be considered gruesome.
maybe it's cause I'm always a big dumb kid at heart but the writing really didn't bother me, reminded me of a GI Joe cartoon, I kinda found it charming to have the big hero swoop in and do all this bloodless carnage
Except Overwatch doesn't work as a racial allegory.
Omnics are discriminated against because they were brainwashed into waging war on humanity, murdered a ton of people and even though whatever was behind that got taken out and the war's over, it could still happen again.
It has happened, in fact. At least twice within the story. Pharah has to deal with one of the Omnic AI Masters coming back online in her comic, and a big part of Zarya's story is that she had to give up everything to fight the Omnics in Russia because they AI Master there reactivated and is now killing everyone again.
Why does it seem like gamers don't care about writing when it's the easiest one to improve. Texture quality and stiff gameplay is always called out, but shit writing gets a hand wave.
The fact that Blizzard is still getting away with shit dialogue makes me disappointed. This game could have been above average in all respects if people started demanding better stories from blizz.
Yes I remember that shot.
The short showed a human, cut to a bow being pulled, then suddenly a robot dying. Biggest example of this bullshit so far.

And I really don't care what the lore says and neither do soccer moms. This is still pg crap.
That's because the human and the robot are different.
Not to mention, the game is rated T for Teen, of course they aren't going to show any gore.

But it's like, literally everyone kills each other and blatantly has guns and shit, trying to come up with excuses to not actually shoot or harm people is extremely noticeable and stupid, like honestly how many convenient robots can they kill?
Compare it to the tf2 meet the shorts, one of the earliest ones literally had a line of severed heads.

They are trying to show these trailers in theaters and stuff, so I'd expect that they'd tone down the death.
I knew something felt familiar! They all play out like big-budget toy commercials, except it's for a video game that has all of the toys packaged for $60. I felt that this one was the weakest in hiding the fact that Blizzard's trying to sell you something. Hell we got giant toys appearing in random locations!
This is some Transformers/Hasbro advertisement shit right here!

You're looking way too far into this. They're making these commericals to sell the game, not to sell the game to sell toys.
-i'm dumb-

The voice actor for Marius fucking nailed it.
The moment at 3:45 and the ult being used right before are the perfect example of why making PG-12 animation where violence is involved is always disappointing.
I'm not saying it like that. It's like The Calzone said, they're pulling all the stops to sell you this big product LIKE those toy commercials with that fun cheesy flair(unpopular opinion) to get you hooked. Writing notwithstanding, but the animation and the character abilities are enough to see people this game.
Ehhh I though it was OK
yeah no I'm a huge weeb fan for this game and Soldier 76 is one of my favorites but no justification- that wasn't very good.
[sp]MI FAMILIA[/sp]
[editline]22nd May 2016[/editline]
everyone here had character except the spotlight character of the story
[editline]22nd May 2016[/editline]
(it's honestly great that everything besides this game's story is great enough to carry it's lack of story. The core issue is that they keep advertising Overwatch like the "Recall" trailer. They keep wanting to shove the Omnic Crisis and boo hoo the world is so bad and devastating nowadays aren't YOU ready to ANSWER THE CALL kinda shpeel and only that. When in reality the gameplay of Overwatch- although fantastic, plays nothing like the story they keep trying to present.)
TF2's Success as a story and with trailers and comics is because they built upon what the gameplay literally was. Classes of personified steryotypes that only exist to fight replicas of themselves that are wearing a different colored shirt.
What the fuck does saving the world or RETURNING THE CALL have to do with ANYTHING when I'm literally fighting alongside the world's villains to accomplish the world-saving goal of pushing a fucking limo down Hollywood?

To be fair(Even though they don't deserve it), some of the cast don't consider the robots sentient/equal to human, I think Hanzo is one of those, I know Zarya and that indian turret person are super robot racist.
Not really emo either so much to my memory. Kerrigan is also fighting for redemption last I remember
Haha no, she was brooding so fucking much that it might as well have been the reason why an expansion was called brood war. And then it turned into hurrdurrcorruption that metzen always goes fucking into.
Dude, what the fuck happened to the robot in the end? Did (they?) die from (their?) injuries? Did someone help them out or what? Did S76 go back for them and lend them a hand? Did the robot just die on the curb?
I know it's a short, but holy shit that seems like a thing that should be addressed.
overwatch shorts are like michael bay films, flashy but shallow and ill-explained. Doesn't mean they're not fun, so long as you don't go into it expecting some deep lore exploration. This pretty much explained what people who read into lore already know, S76 is a fallen-from-glory soldier turned batman. No super powers, just some good ol' tools and a taste for vengeance.
Also those tattoos were sick
animation like others said was a bit over the top/wonky, and the kids were kind of generic *rolleyes* animated in the museum cinematic trailer. Feels more like a pet-project for the game animators to expand portfolio and make use of their time when they don't have game-related stuff to chug at, and given the game itself is so well animated I'm totally all for them doing this to refine their skills
also the slightly-off accents and such (tracer and this little girl early on), I'm reminded of the english dub of Wakfu, which was done by some french canadians who 90% speak normal english, but some words just fucking TANK for no reason
all in all it wasn't special but like others have said, this is where a decent chunk of their advertising budget is going, and that's pretty OK compared to what else they could have done
