Not just CS, but gaming in general. Heroes of Newerth has been having a few competitions with cash prizes, among other things.
Granted, he's probably just making stuff like this because it's his favorite hobby, and one he's really good at, but still, you don't know if he's into big tournaments or not. Sure, it's nerdy, but money is money, and money is nice.
People get serious about gaming because it's their favorite hobby, one of the best hobbies, in my opinion. Some people play to have fun, and for a few people, myself included, fun comes from playing well, doing well, and enjoying it. It's very hard to have fun when all you're doing is losing.
I wonder if he knows they made a counter strike with less ugly. It's called Source.

Games take skill, Esports are great it gives more people to show off skills that they have just like the way any other sport does. The videos when they are edited are so they look nice when people watch it. Just because you personally don't like all the fancy editing doesn't mean others don't like the look of it.
