Cuphead was just so unique and fresh in gaming, it was a hard thing to go against.
While it was new for video games, it was an old and established aesthetic that already existed decades ago in film. Cuphead didn't really do anything new or unique with it's aesthetic, which is why I feel like it's a pretty disappointing pick for any best aesthetic/art direction awards.
What's impressive about Cuphead is the sheer undertaking of the project and the standard of quality it was produced to. Stuff like Persona had its bold, inventive, and completely unique and cohesive aesthetic created from the ground up, and somehow made it work seamlessly and fluidly with great UI and UX design. It's much more compelling from an aesthetic standpoint to do what Persona did, imo.
Hey I think I heard the vox tts from half-life 1.
alright what's the name of the game of the guy licking some dudes gun at the urinal
Persona 5s style comes from SMT and older Personas, but had new hardware powerful hardware, and the a-team with big financial backing. The aesthetic has already been used in multiple of their games, its just 5 was that much better, but thats just why I think Cuphead deserved the win, its the first time a games really gone and done that and it was pulled off flawlessly.
Plus that aesthetic is insanely hard to pull off, that style of animation still looks good barring some of the oldest shit, and better than shit today.
Disagree. While P5's aesthetic definitely drew some influence from older SMT and Persona games, it was a hugely unique and incredibly ambitious game aesthetically, even within the context of the SMT and Persona series. There's more impressive aesthetic direction in the menus of Persona 5 than there is in any of the previous SMT/Persona games, and in Cuphead for that matter.
Holy shit Nier is sweeping this
Nier Automata is destroying everything in its path.
