yeah the worst thing that can happen to a game about -running across rooftops- is having it have a wide open city to play in!
Pacing plays a really important role in a game like Mirror's Edge, having a linear route and controlled mission structure aids this, open world games do not. Granted, ME did actually have some glaring pacing issues, but overall it was a fluid experience, I'm doubtful making it open world is going to fix these issues.
I feel like the reduced complexity of the visuals, story and exposition in the original Mirror's Edge inadvertently lent the game a degree of subtlety. Everything from the level design to the plot gave the sense that it was part of something bigger that just wasn't shown to the player, and because of this the game felt a lot more interesting. Now when they're actually going all-in on making the plot, game world and graphics as detailed and dramatic as possible it feels like they're throwing away that subtlety that previously worked massively in the game's favor and replacing it with something potentially worse. I remain cautiously optimistic. See: Half-Life, Portal If you're going to focus on a cohesive story that is driven by the actions of the player, linear gameplay is the safest bet by far.
I don't understand, when mirrors edge first came out majority of people wanted it to be open world. Now that the new reboot is open world, people seem to want it to go back to being linear ? I absolutely despise games that shouldn't be open world, turned into open world games (look what a disaster MGS 5's open world turned out to be). But if I had to think of a game what would benefit in being open world, it would have to be mirrors edge. I understand the pacing issues that might occur and how it wouldn't be as polished as a linear experience, but I feel if they went for linaer levels again, it would feel too much like running around in a gigantic obstacle course and not actually running in a legit city.

But since then we've had tons of games going open world, and not necessarily to their benefit. And it's not so much pacing. It's about level design. ME1's levels WERE linear, but they were very well crafted. It's harder to make a very carefully made world when it's huge.
I dunno, I mean ME1 was decent enough but I think you guys are remembering the levels as significantly nicer than they were. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy the game a ton but there's plenty of room for experimentation all around with it, it wasn't a -superb- game. It was a superb concept
Will she get the arm tattoo later in the story or something? I hope they didn't just get rid of it.
Will she get the arm tattoo later in the story or something? I hope they didn't just get rid of it.
One of the first trailers ever was her getting the tattoo, so I'd assume yes.
yeah the worst thing that can happen to a game about -running across rooftops- is having it have a wide open city to play in!
Considering movement itself is like 90% of the game the level design has to be perfect throughout and an open world environment just doesn't allow for the kind of detail and originality that a game like this requires. If you can fuck around in an open world environment but every building has the same structure or if there's actually only one path from one building to the next then it's pointless.
Looks pretty damn nice so far. Definitely glad there's more focus on the story. Let's just hope they don't decide to pander to the pro Anita Sarkeesian crowd with parts of it. Or try to push some sort of pretentious agenda. Yes, I know Anita had nothing to do with the development of the game, but her visiting EA and DICE regarding it is concerning enough, to be honest.
Did no one noticed this? [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/D03rM0u.jpg[/thumb] The roof...
Did no one noticed this? [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/D03rM0u.jpg[/thumb] The roof...
...what roof.
Did no one noticed this? [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/D03rM0u.jpg[/thumb] The roof...
There's so much visually exhausting bollocks happening in that scene that I honestly can't tell if there's a building lacking a roof or if it's just an overdesigned futuristic-looking set piece
Did no one noticed this? [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/D03rM0u.jpg[/thumb] The roof...
Well the game is still in development. There are bound to be glitches. They may have missed this when making the video.
I am ready for it :P Hype level NaN
Judging from the trailer I hope that Faith doesn't go through "Other M" syndrome.
Hahaha, the idea that you could free run with those.
Unrelated to the boobs thing, while I don't like the design of the city nearly as much in Mirror's Edge 2 I do think the story looks much more interesting than the first. Having it actually be about runners rather than a half-assed murder conspiracy thing that wasn't even resolved is a huge step up IMO.

For some reason, Mirror's Edge was one of those games I could NEVER acquire a working copy of. Call it bad luck, a gypsy's curse, or whatever have you, but I could NEVER acquire a working fucking copy of ME. I played the demo for this bitch nearly as much as the JC2 demo and easily loved it just as much. It was fun playing around with the environment, testing your limitations and pushing the envelope seeing what you could get away with as you learned more. I'm so upset I never got to play the full game. You know what's funny? I had another issue like this with another EA game. Most Wanted: the original. Could never get past the tutorial race without the game hard locking on me. After going through 4 different copies of the damn game I just demanded a refund and got something else. Fuck, I REALLY hope Catalyst will be good.
"BACK OFF" if I ever play this I know im skipping every cutscene.
now this is a really weird complaint, but i can't help but notice everything just looks like the inside of a Boots that gross bleached fiberglass look mixed with awful minimalist architecture that's at once too straight and clean but also somehow visually exhausting [editline]6th February[/editline] WHERE'S MY SUPER-DETAILED PAINTED CONCRETE TEXTURES YOU HACK FRAUDS
Did no one noticed this? [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/D03rM0u.jpg[/thumb] The roof...
It took me a few minutes for my eyes to adjust, then I noticed the flying cars. They really did take out the things I liked from the first one for a CGI overproduced mess, George Lucas-ing it is too accurate.
Mirrors edge looked very minimalist as well, except everything had a soft tone to it so it was pleasing on the eyes.
Mirror's edge was minimal in design but not in texture. Everything had a rough texture up close, but if you were to take the image and remove the texture, you'd get the "minimalist" style that people remember. Light was pure white, shadows were a cold blue, and colors were bright. That sharpness in quality I believe is lost when everything is phongy and reflective and glossy.
[t]http://flight.lachlanmcdonald.com/assets/previews/098C.jpg[/t] I find it really difficult to articulate exactly why the first game looked so damn pleasing. Even the clutter looks good.
Mirror's Edge benefited from having a rather small team that kept a concise visual style. They do great work with color grading which helps a scene have visual harmony, and used what is actually rather impressive GI technology when it was made. I could also go into how the familiar-yet-alien style of the city also contributes heavily to the feel of it, like a surreal dream.

It almost seems like something you'd discover on accident. Like, "whoops the color tuning for this unfinished area bollocked out, let me just... wait, this looks kinda good"?
Remember the final stage of developing a game is re-texturing and improving what looks off. we still have a few months to go. But yes it seems the art style they are choosing here is a bit different that it was in the previous game.

In reality, Mafia 2 was an extremely linear game, they just happened to let you dick around in the city. Really good interview about it: http://deadendthrills.com/building-the-impossible-mirrors-edge/ Featuring one of my favorite level designers, Briscoe. Who works at Valve now.
:hypeisreal: Dat trailer, I can't wait. Mirrors Edge is one of those games I always hoped for a sequel, next to HL.
