Although, since the character will be someone "unexpected", what could be expected less than a character from an huge alternate universe that's made no more than very tiny cameos in any of the games.

Thanks to the insistence on not using any of his actual supporting cast in gameplay anymore, Sonic has become his own supporting cast.

I will be utterly disappointed if this will be crossover character from non-sonic game or yet another new character. Why make a new one when we have enough unused characters with pretty unstable backstory which is changed in every game anyway?
It'll be awesome if it were Sally but this character doesn't really look like a female and IMO the chances are incredibly low for any official/archie story crossover.
Some people suggest that this might be Archie's Antoine but eh... I dunno, he looks similar but again I don't think archie crossover is something Sega is ready to do:

If they do a cross over from Archie, it would definitely be Sally. I think it would be cool to see any of those characters though, being a fan of the old cartoon with the same characters and all.

It's said that Amy, Knuckles, the Chaotix and Silver are returning in this game though.
Still wondering what roles they'll have this time around, and hopefully it isn't just final boss banter or they're put into the sidelines.

I've read somewhere that most of the time they will talk with you via radio. But take this with a grain of salt, I don't remember where I have seen this and if this was confirmed as official information.

Those who have played the Modern Sonic stage they showed off have confirmed the other characters serve as a radio role while running through the stages. There's also strange word going around that it's not so much three gameplay styles as it is Boost for Modern Sonic, and the Classic Sonic "with a twist." I can't find any truth for that seeing as pretty much [b]everything[/b] alleges there to be three gameplay styles and SEGA hasn't done anything to shoot down this notion.
people hated sonic's supporting cast so much, now all we get is a clone and fucking bubsy
