"Checking your privilege" basically means that you should realize that you--as a white male--should understand that you have more privileges than those that are not you. Your situation is very different from others and you shouldn't judge them all based on your own experience as a white CIS SCUM
Is it bad that the only thing I can think of that if I were there I would have started laughing?
What does check your privilege even mean?
Is there a step by step guide on how to check your privilege?

It isn't simply about ethnicity. Religion, culture and individual charactaristics come into play.

This calculator should help but it doesn't go into as much detail as other ones.
Each year I get really tan, so I can pretend I'm hispanic and get my privilege checked.
Social Justice Warriors are the reason I only use tumblr for gay porn

I love how "shit-tier Europe" and "Black Jew" can be chosen :v:
Since when is the UK "middle Europe".
The uncomfortable-looking old white guy was a nice touch.

I'm unprivileged suck it CIS scum.
what about those of us that are kinda pale? do you we have to check our privilage a little bit more?
Privilege is a real thing in our society, and white straight not trans* (meaning 'cis') rich men are more likely to possess it.
A couple of badly worded tumblr posts should not dissuade all of you from understanding the most basic facts about society.
The hated and laughed at term, check your privilege, is not actually that controversial: it just means that you should put yourself in the shoes of those you are not. This is referred to as Sociological Imagination, and it is extremely important for activism, awareness, and research.
If you are rich and you successfully understand a part of what it is like to be poor, then you will be more likely to not only feel shitty about it, but also possibly use that guilt and put it towards something constructive. This is called checking your privilege.
This is easy stuff to understand.
Did she just compare racism to hurricanes, bombings and shootings? I'm not saying racism is a doozy, but goddamn that's just stupid.

So basically all this shit is just empathy. A thing that the majority of humans can reciprocate
And I'd rather people just say that. "Be more empathetic," or, "walk a mile in their shoes." "Check your privilege," has always seemed kind of hostile to me. You also get people hating so called "privileged" people based only on what they can see.
*white person with a megaphone* yep not gonna listen to this

Empathy is difficult when society tells you not to feel it. People tend to pull away from feeling empathy by trying to justify the 'problems' of our society (in quotes because our society is designed to oppress based on various lines, and is wildly successful) with the norms and values of our society, ie "if the poor worked harder they would be like us so we don't need to help them", etc.
Once Empathy is achieved, action is needed. Sitting around and feeling bad won't do the oppressed much good.

that's racist

What they see are people who are living much better lives for absolutely no reason. Getting angry is a normal response. A poor person trying to imagine how a hedge fund manager lives will get angry: why does this person feel justified in controlling more wealth than millions of food strapped people? Hostility to some degree must be expected.
Expecting the oppressed to be calm and not say anything hostile or hostile sounding is actually rather privileged of us.
That being said, "checking one's privilege" does not sound nearly as offensive as the fact that we live in a society of unjust privileges.
that's racist
No it is not.
I know this post will get plenty of dumbs, but I have to say what is true anyway.
White people control our society. It is impossible for white people to be victims of racism. Discrimination? Potentially. However, the orchestrators of a racist society cannot be victims of that society. Claims of racism against white people are usually wrong: either because they are dimwitted defenses against their own acts of racism, dimwitted attacks against civil rights activists, or because people confuse racism (the combination of laws, values, and norms that bear down upon racial minorities in our society) and individual acts of discrimination motivated (sometimes wrongly) by white power over other races. One is encouraged and made easy by society (white on black violence, for example), while the other is vilified to the nth degree and seen as justification for further racism.
White people cannot be victims of racism.
if someone on fp had a megaphone and got on a stage id throw something at you

You scored -55. 100 and above is considered privileged.

Check your unprivilege uncomfortable in skin scum
Discrimination, yes. But that is not the same thing as having an entire society built dedicated to elevating certain people above others.
Don't worry, I have seen the protesters in Downtown of my city pulling white people out of cars and beating them up 'for Trayvon'. White people are victims of discrimination but it is borne out of the same racist white-preferring society that oppresses all non white people.
I use too many words: the key is that Racism is Oppression, while Discrimination against white people is not.

so discrimination based off race is not racism because its against whites, but when its against blacks, its racism. wat?
by definition, racism is "Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race" I see nothing about "who is in control" and who the minority is.
