• Why Do YouTubers Become Assholes? -- TotalBiscuit, Taciturnity, & Traps

What this thread and the whole TB thing taught me is that some people are just more willing to make massive assumptions if that lets them antagonize a random bloke on the internet in the name of some other group of people, than actually take the two minutes of research it takes to figure out if they're talking out their ass or not. That and those individuals often manage to sound and act more prejudiced than any of the people they're responding to. It's fucking embarrassing to look at.
Totalbiscuit has always had anxiety in relation to reading comments to the point where he had a doctor he was seeing recommend him not to read the comments. Guess he forgot all about that.
I don't agree with TB's view on the matter, but I think it's worth noting that he didn't say "entertainer" he said "presenter", which I think holds a little more merit. The way I interpret that is that a presenter seems more like some one who speaks to an audience rather than with them, if that makes sense. So to say you might not be very good at presenting if you can't present solely on your own sounds a little more reasonable. Keep in mind he has his backround rooted in radio and youtube, so chat interaction to him is not a necessary part of doing his job. And considering when he does stream he avoids interaction completely, he can't look at it from any other angle. I think it's a short sighted view to have that ignores a lot of the realities in the twitch community, and I certainly don't agree with it, but I can see how he came to think that way. I like TB a lot, but I'll admit he says a lot of things I don't agree with or even find ridiculous, and he can very stubborn in looking at things from other perspectives.

Totalbiscuit has always had anxiety in relation to reading comments to the point where he had a doctor he was seeing recommend him not to read the comments.
Love TB but this makes him sound like the last person to tell people how much audience engagement in a stream is appropriate.
And I actually agree. That being said I consider it more of a case of him being misinformed and that he's always been stubborn as opposed to a case of "FAME IS MAKING HIM AN ASSSHOOOOOOLE ;~;" TB's always been this way. He says stupid things, hell he says them fairly often. Does that make him a reprehensible person? In my opinion, no.
TB doesn't even like his own fanbase, and has gone out of his way to antagonize people by saying really, really dumb fucking things on reddit before. Multiple times. He's an asshole who just happens to be pretty good at reporting things
I think with TB I'm less worried about the fame making him an ass and more worried about him considering the weight his voice carries. Not that I'm accusing him of that either, just saying I see that as more likely with him. Forgetting that there's stuff you're not allowed to say anymore when you get big. [editline]16th August 2017[/editline] Although I will say I was confused when I found out he was living in America. Like boy half your shtick is 'I'm british as fuck" and you live south-er than I do
Maybe it's just me but that's an even worse thing to say.
It's not entirely wrong though. I've watched streamers who will just sit there for extended periods of time dicking around with the chat and while I do think It's great to interact with your audience, at the same time I came to watch them play that game, so I want to see them play that game. S'why i love the way streamers like PraiseTheSun (now Tremily) do it, where It's two people and they either alternate who has chat/donation duty or take it in stride during lulls in gameplay.
Are these people who shit on your people in real life, or? Because I'm gender nonconforming as well, and all the hate I've experienced came from outside queer circles. The most I've seen was people saying "drag queens encourage transphobia," but that's talking about drag queens specifically and their culture, not feminine men (I'm not talking about whether or not drag queens link to transphobia, just that I've never seen femme men under that same fire). I don't wish to devalue your experience, though; just curious for elaboration.
Mostly people I used to be friends with online, don't really tell anyone I know IRL that I like doing it unless we're really close. There is one person in one of my close friend groups though that is trans and brought up this very topic because there's a memester in the group who made a feminine penis joke, and they went on a tirade about how people who crossdress while being comfortable in their own body demean the cause of trans people. And I just feel like crap because they bring this sort of stuff up quite often and it just makes me even more reclusive and less comfortable doing it.
Forgetting that there's stuff you're not allowed to say anymore when you get big.
Completely artificial construct, as people like Sam Jackson can demonstrate.
Completely artificial construct, as people like Sam Jackson can demonstrate.
Okay sorry lemme reword that. Forgetting that it would be irresponsible to say some things.
The best way for a group to never gain acceptance is by being really easy to offend, whining a lot, and demanding special treatment and a safe space.
Okay, regardless of your definition of a trap, we can all agree TB went way over the line in calling for everyone to hunt down one guy in order to remove him from the entire convention for saying a meme, right?
Okay, regardless of your definition of a trap, we can all agree TB went way over the line in calling for everyone to hunt down one guy in order to remove him from the entire convention for saying a meme, right?
Oh absolutely.
Yes, and by the same turn making a drama bomb video about how TB has suddenly becamed into Vampire Satan Trump III and padding it with ten extra minutes of nothing is equally histrionic when "TB said and did some shit I disagree with" would suffice, also meme defense force being an actual thing where the meme is you've taken a word and changed the meaning to LULZ WINK WINK begin with.
Yes, and by the same turn making a drama bomb video about how TB has suddenly becamed into Vampire Satan Trump III
Thats... Not at all what he said?
and padding it with ten extra minutes of nothing is equally histrionic when "TB said and did some shit I disagree with" would suffice
The video was essentially that and going into examples of him having a history of acting kind of like a dick.
also meme defense force being an actual thing where the meme is you've taken a word and changed the meaning to LULZ WINK WINK begin with.
Did the meme kill your family or something, why are you so mad about it?
Totalbiscuit has always been an asshole with a chip on his shoulder, years before he even became big on youtube, I don't have it handy but there's a big long winded post he's made on another forum talking how smart he is, and he got banned for his dumbass post.
That SomethingAwful rant is a classic.
That SomethingAwful rant is a classic.
I'd never heard of that. Gotta link?
Also apparently he said something about Hellblade?
I'd never heard of that. Gotta link?
https://www.reddit.com/r/copypasta/comments/1ld0r4/totalbiscuits_rant_from_something_awful_back_in/
Did the meme kill your family or something, why are you so mad about it?
27X is just mad in general.
Some people have real thin skins on the subject. The other day I made reference on the attack helicopter joke, and an openly trans person tried to talk me down about it.
This video is so nitpicky and outright ignores important events and statements. Obviously someone looks like an asshole if you only concentrate on the shitty things a person did and you don't show stuff like this: http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1s4rhtt TotalBiscuit isn't an asshole, he is sensitive and impulsive with the misfortune of having cancer which probably doesn't help. Did he overreact at the convention? Absolutely. Does it justify the amount of hate he and his videos receive (just look at the downvotes after the incident, when certain subreddits started attacking him)? No.
To be fair if someone repeatedly and consistently has anger issues with interacting with people on the most basic level then the excuses and apologies can only take them so far. And for all the professionalism TB can show in a vacuum, he fucking sucks at PR in terms of direct contact. He hasn't really improved in that regard and has instead sought to involve in this part of his job as little as possible in order to minimize problems, because evidence shows that, whether or not TB wants to or not, he can't help but be a massive prick to anyone he has to interact with on a more personal scale than just large, non-specific statements. There is a point where you can't really be excused any longer and TB's past that point. We know he's got anger issues, we know he's absolutely helpless in terms of improving his social skills, so when he himself skips those parts and goes right back to angry uneducated shitfits on twitter, there's no one else to blame but him.
Didn't TB also go off on his wife for not voting for Hilary Clinton during the election, blaming her for Trum getting elected?
Also apparently he said something about Hellblade?
All he really had to say about it was that he got bored during the opening scene and that he doesn't like the "If you die too many times it's game over but actually it isn't or is it" thing, whether it's deliberately meant to fuck with you or not. He got a bit ranty as usual but I'm not sure why anyone brought it up as an example of him being unhinged or whatever. [editline]a[/editline] On the topic of his inability to keep out of shit for his own wellbeing, seems he just declared war on Anita after her followers attacked Laura Kate Dale. well, by "ya tribalist pricks" he probably meant alt-righters, not his audience
Just checked his twitter out of curiosity and saw these two posts, posted right after another. I don't even know what to say.
Older tweets show up below newer ones, and these were posted about half an hour apart...
To be fair, the reason she was attacked by her was the fact she wrote and article about Totalbiscuit:
I know why he's doing it, but as has been mentioned here several times he has a hard time coping with negative shit and he's just invited a shitload more of it his way. It's going to take a huge toll on his health.
I think it's ironic how he calls out people who have been shitting on him like that, only to follow up with a thank you to his fanbase who HE has been shitting on for god knows how long.
I don't know where everyone's getting this "he hates his fans" thing from. Are we talking about that "I don't need you people" spat from years ago that he's since gone back on and admitted he was wrong? The only fans I've seen him shitting on lately have been the ones doing shitty things, like harassing devs for a game he said he didn't like or mocking that one kid with the annoying laugh at one of his panels.
