Holy shit. Ten years. Fucking crazy how times past.
Out of nostalgia, I had a quick look on my bungie.net profile, and I found a picture of me /trying/ to make a image of my guinea pig in forge.
How do you even get on your profile?
Nah there's definitely something about games back then that games today lack. I've been back and played a lot of older games, and noticed how much more I enjoy them compared to the shitty mass appeal crap they make now that the marketing teams have finally perfected mass marketable schlock. Nobody takes risks like they used to, the only game I've really enjoyed recently was The Witcher 3.
To me at least, modern games look amazing, but are about as deep as a reflecting pool. If you look at trends in popular games, you'll see the ones hitting mass appeal, are the ones that buck this trend. PUBG is a multiplayer game with a ton of depth. Don't Starve Together, Dota 2, CS:GO, ARK, R6 Siege, are also similar, and hugely successful.
People keep saying Halo 3 still looks great- what about Halo 1? I think Halo 1's art style still holds up. It wasn't trying to be hyper realistic and it didn't use a lot of cheap effects for wow factor. It's aged well.

I agree. Even years ago, I always thought Halo 1 would age better than Halo 2. It has more of a deliberate style to it than the later games did. There was a beautiful simplicity to it, and to this day I still prefer many of the Halo 1 designs for Covenant machinery over the later games which made them more technical looking and less alien. There's also a lot of little cool things the first game did that they didn't do again like the super exaggerated impact and blood effects and the over the top empty shells that you could fill hallways with.

I've always viewed Halo 3 as a very natural succession to Halo CE's style, in virtually every way.

And in general level aesthetic:

I wish I could get hyped for a Halo game again. The bungie era of Halo games really defined the shooter genre for me.
I don't have nostalgia for Halo 2 since I didn't play the multiplayer (never cared about it in any title) and never played it on release so I don't agree with the claims for it being the best title in the franchise.
Halo 3 was a super solid game and possibly by favorite in the series followed very closely by CE and ODST. It's pretty incredible how well it holds up ten years later.
Halo always had a good gameplay loop so a decade really does nothing to make it seem outdated. The holy gun-melee-grenade trifecta feels super solid, vehicle handling is on point and the levels are mostly well designed. Only slight problem is if you end up without a vehicle in the middle of the big vehicle arenas it can take a hilariously long time to slowly jog over to grab another vehicle. Movement speed being slow and engagements taking long was always a good thing but it does hurt a bit in some of the singleplayer levels.
Graphically and stylistically the game holds up better than Crysis (which still looks good) due to phenomenal art design, a nice and vibrant colour space and map design that hides flaws like object render distance well. Seeing high resolution screenshots from the backwards-compatible version or the cobbled together PC F2P shooter thing feels great as you can see that the low screen resolution of the original release didn't end up covering flaws, rather than hiding even more detail which can now be seen.
Storywise I thought the game was one of the more well handled endings to massive franchises I've seen but I've seen people express some disappointment. Only low points I can think of were the levels Cortana and Halo. Cortana spends too much time in an ugly and confusing environment fighting the less interesting enemies and Halo had a dumb bossfight plus (in my opinion, of course) a slightly disappointing warthog run. Meanwhile Tsavo Highway and The Covenant are some of the absolute best levels in the series, only beaten by the God-King of levels: Silent Cartographer. The rest of the levels minus the aforementioned disappointments were very solid too.
MC & Cortana ending up on the bisected Forward Unto Dawn in the middle of nowhere was a great ending and while it was obvious Microsoft was going to continue the franchise with or without Bungie, I do wish the story of those two had ended there.
Something I've always wondered about a bit though; to those who never read any Halo books or other side material, how coherent was the story of the Bungie games to you? Having filled the gaps with the novels myself it seems hard to bridge Halo CE to Halo 2 or most understand most things about Reach if you haven't read them.
Music was obviously on point, they had Marty.
Multiplayer was fine, didn't play that much of it and didn't buy any of the map packs because I was already against paid multiplayer back then. I've heard that Halo 2 had better maps but I can't offer an opinion on that. Custom games were cool and I played some fun matches with random people and people from FP but not as much as I'd like now in hindsight. I've never been absolutely comfortable with the BR-oriented weapon balance over the pistol domination as I found it a less satisfying weapon to use overall. Didn't help that in both campaign and MP you basically always had to sacrifice one of your two precious weapon slots to a headshot-capable weapon like the Covenant Carbine or BR. In Halo:CE I felt comfortable dropping the pistol on many occasions but felt stuck to the CC and BR in later games.
It's a shame 343 at the helm has dropped my interest in Halo from "#1 franchise, gotta get everything about it" to "maybe i'll play it if it's released on pc and 75% off". I'm not even that offended by the story direction, gameplay changes or new music. The visual design of everything is now garbage and that really kills it for me.

It lacks panache, but considering the main goals of the protagonist and the setting, it makes sense.
Ironic because the game is also dead
I had this trailer downloaded on my Xbox 360 and would watch it all the time and get hyped.
I remember buying Crackdown just to have access to the Halo 3 beta. I'm glad I did because Crackdown was fucking great.

It is quite literally Halo 3 PC. The Blam 3 engine and code is there (actually ODST's version of Blam 3), all we need is the game data. M$ unknowingly gave the fans what they wanted, it's really a wonder they have been so fair about this too.

They added real-time screen space reflection, was that some OG Bungie code they disabled, or something the Russian studio added?
wtf its been that long since halo 3... best halo for me... everything after halo 3 failed to capture my attention tbh
I had a great time with Reach. I don't understand why it gets so much shit. It really doesn't deserve it.
I have to say, my favorite moment of Halo 3 had to be the Frigate scene where all the frigates come together and then get blasted and then a flood ship comes in.
