not even close to the truth 80 bucks for an MMO that you have to pay a sub fee for? anyone who thinks that is reasonable is on crack
Nobody went crazy when WoW was released for 50 dollars + subscription fee, which you could p much round to 60$+15$ in today's purchasing power (inflation). While I totally agree that this is bad practice and nothing justify hiding a higher fee behind a gigantic grind wall like the horses example, it's still exaggerated to think that this is an "outrageous" price for game that will give you (should you actually enjoy the game) hundreds of hours of entertainment through out months, years even. If all strongly established MMOs like WoW or EVE would increase their monthly subscription by 5$ then a vast majority of the current player base would still agree to pay for it, because the amount of hours of entertainment you get per month easily outweigh buying AAA on a regular basis. There's no reason to increase prices directly, hence why ESO hides it behind a "Imperial Edition" paywall, and I bet they'll inevitably make the game F2P by the end of this year anyway, but this is far from the biggest ripoff we've seen in the industry so far. (It IS however, overpriced by MMORPG standards) Sadly the game's complete shit and isn't even worth being F2P.
I agree with everything he said in this. The time I spent with this game (admittedly only about 6 hours) was almost tortuous. I felt like i needed to pull myself through every quest against my will. It was the most dull, uninteresting, boring MMO experience I've ever had. As for it being subbed, I have no problem with subscriptions, but only if the game is worth it... And this game is so far from that. I mean, I'm setting myself up to play Wildstar when it comes out, and I've put in many many hours into the beta so far. It's a sub based game and I can already tell I'm more than happy with the game to pay that sub fee. And sure there's some boring quests in it, but for the most part I enjoy my time with the game each time I sit down to play it. But ESO? It just vacuumed all the fun EVERYTHING. Whereas most MMO have so dull parts, ESO IS A DULL PART. Through and through. It's awful. Yeah it has some cool ideas, like total class freedom, but the nice features don't come close to redeeming everything else wrong with the game.
This is also the reason why i am waiting out till i get to hear more about WildStar.
WILDSTAR IS GREAT, THATS ALL I CAN SAY I played it after buying the collectors edition of ESO...The lore, the world, the gameplay, the visuals, the everything is so much better.
WILDSTAR IS GREAT, THATS ALL I CAN SAY I played it after buying the collectors edition of ESO...The lore, the world, the gameplay, the visuals, the everything is so much better.
Which is sad, because odds are Elder Scrolls Online will probably make more profit (at first, anyway) due to the brand name attached to it.
not even close to the truth 80 bucks for an MMO that you have to pay a sub fee for? anyone who thinks that is reasonable is on crack
And meth. I don't know who would say $60 + $15/mo for a game is good value, even for a really good game, and I certainly don't know anyone who says $80 + $15/mo is good value for any game. Those that think it is don't know the value of money very well, and even if you do know the value of money, you can compare the game with other games and see they're ripping you off anyway. EvE online: Get it on sale for $5 a lot, $20 when it isn't on sale. It comes with 30 days. They also offer 14 and 21 day trials that let you subscribe and not even have to pay the initial cost. You can pay for your subscription with in-game currency instead of cash, and they've released TWENTY expansions at no extra charge That's decent value, especially for an MMO. ESO? $60, with locked out features unless you pay $80, and a monthly sub, of which people are saying they charge you for before they even give you your 30 free days. And those locked out features are fairly important for an Elder Scrolls game. Can't play an IMPERIAL? Only some races can be in certain factions? Elder Scrolls my ass. What a fucking joke
Can you imagine if they had just focused on making a new Elder Scrolls game.
Can you imagine if they had just focused on making a new Elder Scrolls game.
This is being made by zenimax online, a new studio started by zenimax. Bethesda game studios are working on the next TES game, like they have been for the last decade. This won't affect that.
WILDSTAR IS GREAT, THATS ALL I CAN SAY I played it after buying the collectors edition of ESO...The lore, the world, the gameplay, the visuals, the everything is so much better.
Can't deny Wildstar looks interesting but it has deadly combination of three that turns many people off quickly. You have to buy the game in order to play it. You have to pay monthly subscription. There is in game store that works with real money.
Yes, but the third option can eliminate the second option
Weird. Gaming magazines seem to like it, most reviews say it takes time to get into it but once you're in it's really deep with good quests and all.
Gaming magazines are all paid to give positive reviews so I wouldn't trust their opinion. Also, laughed my ass off at the voice acting on that tree dude, you would expect some deep bass creaky voice or some shit but nope, average nice guy voice :v:
Yeah I'm gonna stick to GW2. ArenaNet did it right.
There is in game store that works with real money.
It doesn't have that.
Which is sad, because odds are Elder Scrolls Online will probably make more profit (at first, anyway) due to the brand name attached to it.
wildstar will make more money in the longrun
Yes, but the third option can eliminate the second option
so long as you're a no-life who can spend hours upon hours grinding out in-game money in place of trading one or two hours' worth of real job money in a month. that kind of system just rewards toxic habits and draws you away from the enjoyable meat of the game

Alright so I watched the review and threw some money towards it despite what was in the video. I knew what I was getting into and I spent $40 on the game with a free month membership. After a few days worth of gameplay I feel like Joe's review might have overreacted some points. In terms of gold, I get between 2 to 4 gold per enemy killed and I get rewarded 100 to 250 gold per quest stage completed, and it's like every 15 or so minutes you earn the quest gold. You earn a steady income from quests and items / ore you find, I could easily get the 45k within a week for a horse. Even then you really don't need it as you can teleport around the map using wayshrines which are free if you want to hop around the map fast. If you're nowhere near the shrines it costs around 45 gold to remotely teleport, so it's pretty cheap. You can kinda understand why they didn't go subscription model, the game doesn't have microtransactions and there's no real way of implementing a system like this in it. I can justify the cost (that I paid) for it as it really fucking does have some content. I agree with most points that Joe makes though, the PVE is shit. Enemies can punch you from 4 metres away due to latency (though you don't ever notice this) and it just ends up you spamming keys one to four to execute something. The game feels like a singleplayer RPG and when it comes to bosses the game pairs you with other people in the area which allows small groups to battle bosses where it would be impossible / hard to do it on your own, so there's an established MMO side to the game. I guess most people will just bandwagon on the "ESO is shit", but it really is worth a gamble. Just search ebay for codes and you'll get the game discounted hard. I like the review and I like the game.
I hope they learn from TESO in a sense to have more than 2 voice actors.
Not really. They have voice actors from Fallout 3, Michael Gambon who plays Dumbledore, John Cleese and motherfuckin' wonderwoman.
While I agree with the issues related to the game itself, a subscription based MMO asking for an initial fee of 60$ or more is very common practice and considering MMO players tend to spend a lot of time playing the game per month, the pricing of 80$ for game and relevant content + 15 $ for subscription is pretty trivial, and most will pay without much care because they expect getting a lot of good value in the first place. JOE really exaggerates how much of a "money grubbing tactic" the pricing really is.
You have to pay the $60 first, which should give you gametime to begin with, and yeah it does, but you also have to set up a payment plan for a subscription so you can actually make use of that time, which is absolute bullshit. The game itself should have been free of charge, with the primary cost coming from a subscription. Or at most, some kind of starter pack bundle for $60 if they wanted customers to pay for a full-price game. It should also have a trial period. At least then you can download the client and get a free trial, and if you like it you can subscribe. All MMO's I've played have some kind of trial period, so you can see if you like it before you commit. The fact that they're making people spend this amount of money on this is just to even try the game is wrong. No MMO should function like this.
Can you imagine if they had just focused on making a new Elder Scrolls game.
Yes it would be fucking awful if they did that Fallout time is well past due
The only bullshit thing Joe said that put me off was "There was no player housing or sneaking" I wouldn't know how the hell you'd impliment those into an MMO anyway to begin with :v: Also I wouldn't jump on the bandwagon, but rather I would agree, that while there are good choices to be found here, it's still a big mess.

WoW's had sneaking in for ages, they're putting in player housing in the next expansion. Wildstar is having player housing.

Why not just ignore every game then since you have to buy them.
Your first turn off is that you have to buy the game? Are you serious? Why not just ignore every game then since you have to buy them.
Paying $60 for, let's say Titanfall why not, is different, since that's a single-purchase game, you don't need (and I mean that in the real sense of need) to buy anything else to get the experience. TESO is an MMO where you'll already be paying $15 a month subscription on top of the $60 to begin with. There's no reason to have the $60 there since if you keep subscribed, you're going to end up paying them $60 in less then half a year. Basically my point is that $60 for a single contained game is ok because you don't need to pay any extra after, $60 plus $15 a month for however long you want to play it is ridiculous since a year of subscription is fucking $180.

If you are hidden, you are literally invisible.
I'm pretty sure he meant that you can't go around being a Thief in the Elder Scrolls sense of crouch-walking up behind someone and pickpocketing them, or looting houses and stores of everything. Sneaking is still there, but only for sneak attacks or getting past hostile mobs, ala WoW.
