• Bill Nye Saves the World: And other stuff?

I'm kinda glad I stopped watching after the second episode. I fully expected Bill to use the series as a soapbox to preach his political ideologies. That didn't surprise me at all. What surprises me is how much they apparently stray from the environment, psuedoscience / alternative medicine, fact denial, and anti-religious views (did the show ever get into Bill's patent anti-religious angle?), and apparently move over to social justice topics bordering (if not going over into downright) regressive-left territory. The former points I address are all things that I know Bill has an acutely sharp and vocal opinion on. But the latter comes as a surprise to me. What makes the soapboxing of even the elements I anticipated disappointing is how little actual Bill Nye there is in them. Others have already brought up the overdependence of correspondents and the rushed panels, but combining all of that with even the expected soapboxing makes the show disappointing. Throw in the social-justice content, and it just becomes downright disheartening. And that's not even considering how underwhelming and flat the theme is. Literally the only good thing about it is the only thing salvaged from the original - the "Bill! Bill! Bill!". The new elements are far from inspiring, in any definition of the word.
people saying this was rushed, but I want proof. This could had been planned for a while, just made by crazy people.
This is a pretty shameful TV show, really soured my opinion of Bill Nye. The Indian dude condescendingly lecturing and insulting white people for buying into Asian culture was bad enough but the ice cream skit is honestly a bit.. Offensive? lol. It makes straight people out as closet homosexuals who are insecure about their identities and constantly trying to convert or change LGBT people.. Meanwhile LGBT people are just super awesome and confident and yet actually tempted someone into an orgy, I guess? Whose dumb fuckin' idea was all this shit?
Also there is this skit: -ice cream video-
What a horrible message. Everyone is secretly bisexual? This is what I'm getting from it. That or it's wrong to be straight...both options are terrible.
What a horrible message. Everyone is secretly bisexual? This is what I'm getting from it. That or it's wrong to be straight...both options are terrible.
Trans-ethnic nonbinary pansexual or w/e. "I didn't chose to be pistachio, I just am" and then "Don't you just want to be two awesome things at once", and the chocolate ice cream is implied to be black?.. What does that have to do with everything else?.. Is mint-chocolate trans-black? And then Vanilla becomes trans-black? And then they all fuck? I'm not sure what they were going for. Any kind of message I can extract from it is terrible. Unless there's no message and it's a story about literal vanilla ice cream who is shy and believes in a weird ice cream religion. Maybe it is.
I think i speak for everyone here when i simply say.......Why? and also What the fuck did i just watch.
Man what the fuck is this I thought it was just going to be Tyler the creator songs feat. Bill Nye. Not this garbage.
come on bill you're better than this shit
Billy's new show owns
Billy's new show owns
Why do you think that? It seems to just be SJW propaganda that throws out anything scientific for engaging with "hip" millenials
It's like an MDE skit except it's not satire Fucking incredible.
Well that was mildly racist. Normally I don't care cause it is in the name of comedy and satire, but the jokes suck, and I am sure that guy sincerely wants people to change their behavior over ridiculous things. Like you shouldn't display a Buddha as a white person, despite Buddhism spanning several continents and supporting no racial exclusivity. Just should rename the show to "Bill Nye: Indoctrinates the World" with that kind of unscientific crap. Also there is this skit:
Where's the beastiality cone, or the necrophilia cone? Is the only determiner of what you feel being good is you feel good?
Where's the beastiality cone, or the necrophilia cone? Is the only determiner of what you feel being good is you feel good?
What flavors would they even be?
i watched it all and really gave it a chance. its a shame that there were so many clearly great moments but they were overwhelmed by a lot of raw garbage. right when something would hit its stride and the argument comes through, the segment switches to poorly thought out skits, pointless celebrity appearances, dumb humor, etc. it also doesnt help that, like was said in one review, the show assumes the audience is already on their side. but the audience that would benefit most from the core concept of the show are ostracized by this pervasive belittling attitude. this is really dumb because while i think going on the offense and really challenging these things is a good direction, you can get that hard-line point across without being condescending. like the noah's ark thing they did. it was fucking cheap. if you're gonna criticize religion do a whole episode and dissect hypocrisy in religions, where they fall apart and fail to reflect reality. the historic and philosophical consequences of dogma, etc. this show would be great if they lengthened it by 10 minutes, dropped the pandering and divisive skits which never had a lick of intellectual consideration behind them, and focus on what makes science appealing and the right frame of mind. appeal to people's intellectual side rather than try to make appeals on emotion. draw them in with interesting science and show the irrefutable rigor. prove your points rather than making weak-handed whine segments. all that said I hope they're given another chance and change for the better. something like this show is much needed but it's not songs about orgies and anal.
the reports done by the celebrities are some of the best parts of the show (that editorial on italy was great,) so pretty much everything that doesn't include bill. the rest of it is a rushed hodgepodge of ideas and an incredible bias that isn't even remotely scientific and doesn't use proper scientific foundations like the show promises. the closest bill ever gets to explaining something with science was the explanation of how heat makes liquids expand, which is an uncommon (in my experiences anyways) scientific explanation of climate change. this sucks cause it has the potential to be good and it just isn't good at all.
Where's the beastiality cone, or the necrophilia cone? Is the only determiner of what you feel being good is you feel good?
Well peanuts aren't ice cream and it's invited to join in sooooo...
bill nye was never great. he's an asshole just like neil degrasse tyson.
bill nye was never great. he's an asshole just like neil degrasse tyson.
you'd probably be a little on edge too if your life's work was trying to preach logic to illogical people who don't even like you
whenever i've looked up this "bill nye is an asshole" thing, all i get is a few stories about how how he doesn't like to sign autographs, which i really don't blame him for. just sounds to me like another baseless "X celebrity is secretly a dick" that literally everyone in the entertainment industry has been a target of

Maybe it's a consequence of the shorter run time of each episode, but what I really want to know is why does it feel so hostile? Why does it seem like a major bullet point to attack 'vanilla' people or White and Asian people? Seriously, who is this supposed to win over or convince?
t-this isnt the bill i remember what the fuck happened

Its one thing to debate/teach using peer reviewed science, but if you're going to be a prick to the people you are trying to educate then people won't listen to you even if you are correct. Bill dismissing nuclear power as a player in solving climate change is a horrible step backwards. Reactors are being built all over the world, just not a lot are being built in the US. To dismiss that no one wants them because they are expensive is such a surface level argument that I can't believe he isn't going into more detail.

Now I personally think there should be better educational media on topics such as Sociological(Race, Gender, Relations, Constructs, etc.) issues and Biological (Psychology, Psychiatry, Sex, etc.) issues, though this show isn't going to be the way as it's going to push people away. To understand the topic will help understand the issues and make the politics surrounding it a whole lot healthier. While I think some will have a lower chance than others to be pulled in to understand subjects, it'd still help to have a larger quantity of quality media to help the willing comprehend layered topics. Whether there will be better media depends on the demand for it.

He just flat out said "People don't want that" on the episode. Begins around 17:55 on the first episode for reference. Besides Nuclear Power has the benefit of being cheap in comparison to R&D technologies when you start talking about efficiency of generating power relative to cost and area needed.
So this is turning out the exact opposite of Adam Ruins Everything (for the most part)? Especially with how Adam said he didn't want to pander to millennials in the first place, but provide well researched information that debunks common misconceptions and urban myths:

Nobody wants Nuclear power. He was raising the issue because it is a real issue.
It's really not that uncommon for the first few episodes of a series to not have the right beat to them. Gotta let a series go through it's first full season before judging it a failure or not.
It's really not that uncommon for the first few episodes of a series to not have the right beat to them. That Sex Junk clip is from episode 11.
I think only the people who have a problem with the political aspect of the show are going to hate it so much to call it a failure. My friends and I are really enjoying it, but we like Bill's cringe-y "ITS SCIENCE, COOL!" way of performing.
