He used to make topical videos about science for early teen (and honestly late teen too cause he was awesome) science classes, and they were usually on VHS. He had this make believe lab and he would constantly do visual experiments and play with fossils and tectonic simulators and just about everything you can imagine that would win a science fair. It was cool as fuck, and it was honestly informative. It kinda sucks how he went down this neo-liberal track instead of sticking to good presentations of science.
Oh, Some have better accused Bill of being Neoliberal Shillies than me.
I don't think neo-liberal is the word your looking for... Did Bill push austerity, deregulation, and free trade on his new show too or something? Neo-liberal is an laissez-faire economic ideology
Maybe, But they share similar beliefs of modern day Libertarianism with different view.
Like, calling a male-to-female trans person a man is an immediate reminder of their non-standard identity, and could range from either someone naively forgetting that the person is trans (which implies they aren't passing and I imagine is pretty demoralizing and painful for a trans person who just wants to be their "proper" gender and forget about it), all the way to someone intentionally mislabeling them because they don't approve of transgenderism. Calling someone "they" instead of "xe".. I just, I don't see that same chain of hurt stemming from it. What meaning does "xe" carry that "they" dismisses or confronts?
- Snip -
I can definitely imagine someone convincing themselves they need to be called "xe", I just think they're a ridiculous and kind of unreasonable person for it. To me it'd almost be akin to a non-trans person wanting to be called a "she". Like "dude I'm a man but just refer to me as 'she' okay?", I'd be like "why? what possible reason could you have for this request?". And like I said, it's a made up pronoun. It's meaningless, it has no real-world context or meaning, it's just something an incredibly tiny portion of the population have cooked up and demanded to be referred to. If you want to be a functioning member of society you have to abide by certain rules and I personally find it unreasonable for someone to demand I learn and use their made-up vocabulary just to make them feel good.
But this is the confusing part for me. If using some made-up word made them more comfortable and it isn't difficult at all, then why would you not do it? Even in the weird situation you made, where if a non-trans person wanted to be called "she", if it's not hard for you to do and it makes them happier, then what's the issue?
I feel like if it makes someone happy, then regardless of how I feel about the whole thing I would still do it. Because I also feel like the "xhe" or whatever things are strange and a bit silly, but if it would make someone feel happier then I would be fine using it.
It's a constant reminder they were born on the planet Earth and not Xenu

The issue is that I'm an autonomous person who has no obligation to follow people's requests and only do so out of my own courtesy to them as a respectful member of society. But if I feel that a person is making an unreasonable request of me, I'm just not going to do it. Even though I know this is a horrible anti-trans cliche, if somebody asked you to call them an "Apache Attack Helicopter" would you do it? Of course not, because they're being ridiculous. I will find "xe" to be ridiculous until somebody can explain to me why it is necessary in the same way swapping he/she for a trans person is necessary.

Well I guess we just feel differently about it. I don't actually know why someone would be happier with "xe" over the usual words, but if it makes them feel better then I don't mind using it.
One. No more children policy
and then in 30 years society collapses
half of the developed world is already struggling with people having 1-2 children. any less would mean the collapse of civilization
I don't get the point of the show. I thought the idea was to tackle complex science, science related issues, and educate people, but so far it just comes across as self-masturbatory shit. You don't save the world by jerking off people that already probably agree with you while making anyone who might be on the fence incredibly uncomfortable and making anyone who disagrees with whatever you have to say downright angry.
The sketches on sexuality are the best because they're wrong, cringy, hypocritical, and somewhat confusing on what their message is.

I guess in the future we just wont need anyone to replace the old folks that naturally die off. Are we somehow going to achieve immortality in the next 30 years?
More like Bill Nye Ruins the World right? :badzing:
Sorry. :v:

I think the citation is needed for the idea that having less than three children per family will somehow cause the collapse of fucking civilization lol
I feel like I've learned more/gotten more out of reading these 5 pages than I would watching this show

Well if everyone stops having children in the US for instance the US would have to rely solely on immigration to replace the aging workforce. I don't see how that is for the best since its relying on the idea that the US is better than wherever most immigrants come from (developing nations) and there will be a time when those developing nations will be good enough to where people wont want to leave them, and there will be a time when the US wont be seen as the best place to go. I know that isn't happening any time soon, but if lets say immigration to a country stops and people continue to not have children or have fewer children in said country, eventually the demographics will get fucked to a point where it will start to stagnate and decline, resulting in said country eventually collapsing (in theory, it hasn't happened anywhere yet since most nations are somewhat stable as far as maintaining proper workforce replacement either through immigration or through birthrates)

Yeah but.. Nobody is saying that everyone needs to stop having children. There's a big difference between halting your country's birth rate entirely and imposing a fine/penalty on people who have more than X amount of children, not that I necessarily agree with that policy.

if a family of 2 have 1 child, and assuming every family in the country does this, then the number of people in the next generation will be half of the preceding one
i don't need a citation when its really that obvious

I said 1-2 children - not 3. don't pretend otherwise
if the average number of children per family is less than 2, you get population decline
if you had a birth rate close to 0, civilization would cease to exist in about 30-60 years
Ohh, my bad, I get what you're saying.

Gotta love that "Mostly" part.
I...
I just wanted more Science Guy.
I just wanted another comfy, fun, genuinely informative show about science.
Why can't we have these things?
Sad thing is, I don't disagree with most the stuff Ive seen on the show (except the cultural appropriation shit), and I think people trying to discredit Bill as "not a real scientist" is really dumb, but jesus Bill why did you have to be such a condescending knob and make such a fucking awful show?

Tbh theres two kinds of cultural appropriation. Done tastefully/artistically, and done ignorantly. The latter isn't ok.
Like you can make the movie Mulan all day long, just don't whack people over the head with a buddha as you yell at their stomach and shake a voodoo doll while wearing a kimono.

Nobody does that. Like, this is the thing, it's such a fucking non-issue that most of the time what people call cultural appropriation is just a byproduct of cultural exchange and international trade, made controversial through manufactured outrage. We've long transcended the era where shit like minstrel shows or The Mikado were OK, there are very few circumstances of legitimately condescending approaches to other cultures in the modern day, and they are overwhelmingly decried.
