I don't disagree with you completely, I'm just drawing a line cause like there's people who bitched about Moana depicting pacific island cultures. Not how they did it, but that they did it at all. They bitched in spite of the fact that the team involved in the film went to great lengths to accurately and respectfully depict everything. They talked with tons of islanders, steering the final vision of Moana's tribe to be a blend of multiple cultures because that's the feedback they got. Really just went the extra mile for a pretty basic film. If it were a disrespectful depiction those complaints would be valid.
There are some people who sell eastern mysticism to ignorant westerners tho. Otherwise there wouldn't be the quack from that episode?? I'm not saying it's a very pervasive issue. To say nobody does that isn't true. One example is Louisiana Voodoo which has been all but completely appropriated and commercialized for tourists.
There's self-righteous dickholes on both sides of the fence. All I'm suggesting is don't sell other cultures to ignorant people but also don't criticize people for merely depicting a culture they don't belong to.
[editline]30th April 2017[/editline]
Also a few years back my county legalized fortune telling stores and mystic shit like that so I can't even go out for a drive without seeing that kind of stuff firsthand. It's not exactly overwhelmingly decried.
Dunno why people look up to bill so much when it comes to science, yeah okay he did a show back in the 90's but he ironically isn't actually a scientist, his degree is in engineering and he doesn't even have a PhD
The show's aiming for a millennial audience, and who better to host the show than someone they grew up associating with logic, fact and the truth?
People look up to Bill because people grew up with Bill.
I guess it's time for Beakman's World to rise again
I love all these scientists who complain about the current political climate but actively do nothing about it.
Hey Bill how about running for an office instead of making s subpar tv show

After this i'm not sure I want him in office.
Getting real sick of "being racist to white people is great/funny"
Like that cunt might as well have said, "Hey black people, I love you I really do but fried chicken really isn't all that great"

Jokes at the expense of white stereotypes are fine.
But they have to actually be funny.

I would agree if it was
Jokes at the expense of any stereotypes are fine.
But at the moment milk and the okay symbol is white power neo-nazism and "Kill all white men" is regarded as slightly controversial.
Scientist is a title given through occupation or profession, not by degree. When you engage in the scientific method you become a scientist. You don't need a degree in a scientific field in order to be called or call yourself a scientist. Often times, people pursing such degree's do a vast amount of science before getting the degree. Like actual peer-reviewed and published shit.
I don't recall Bill Nye having published scientific works, so he's not technically a scientist. And that's okay! What Bill Nye is, is a Science communicator. The importance of such communicators should not be understated in getting kids interested in science.
We don't need a world full of scientists. We need engineers and artists and accountants. What we need is a world full of scientifically literate people.
[editline]30th April 2017[/editline]
People seem to forget that you don't need to have a science degree to publish hard data in a scientific journal. People pursue science degree's because we live in the year 2017 and there's like a thousand years worth of shoulders to stand on before you get to the level of knowledge where you're pushing the collective human knowledge out a little bit. There's a lot of catching up to do, so you get a degree and have doctors and experts in a specific field lecture you about it for 8 years.
And you certainly don't need to be a published expert in a field in order to talk passionately and accurately about it. Though it helps. The fact that Bill Nye, isn't a scientist goes to show the rest of the world's non-scientists that you don't need to BE a scientist to understand science.
this will haunt us again in EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE 2050 calling it now

Why does it always seem like Netflix Originals are really good or really shit. There never seems to be an inbetween.
That's just because people don't talk about the ok ones

Shouldn't the show be aiming to convince people like climate change deniers, about the real threats of climate change? Instead, yeah, the show looks like it's only a complimentary handjob for people who are already Bill Nye fans and who already agree with Bill on things like climate change, while being absolutely condescending to the people who need to be convinced about the science.
Through this idiotic Netflix series, Bill is only hurting the causes which he, and hopefully most of us, are passionate about.
Why does it always seem like Netflix Originals are really good or really shit. There never seems to be an inbetween.
I feel like it's a combination of the fact that Netflix as a platform both encourages experimentation and caters to projects with smaller budgets.
So you're either going to get something like Stranger Things and Chappelle, or Iron Fist and Amy Schumer.

Plot Twist: It already did (for a single episode)

...Netflix should hire Captain Disillusion for a special, instead of whatever this new bill nye show is.

And this is why I am so disappointed in him, disgusted with the show. It was Bill who got me interested in science as a kid, 100%, to the point that even today I still enjoy watching his original show. Seeing what drivel he puts his name on now, what his legacy is going towards, and comparing that to what he did in the 1990s.....Words fail me.
I would kill for a one on one with Bill about this, see if I could convince him to drop the new show entirely and reopen Nye Labs, to pick back up where he left off so many years ago. The formula still works, it just needs updated data to cover what we have learned over the intervening decades.
Y'know, after all this... Neil DeGrasse Tyson may be a bit pompous, but at least he stays true to science. I'd pick him over Bill any day now... and that feels kind of depressing to say.

Tyson suffers from the same problem, to some extent I feel. Like, he's just too smug and wrapped up in being a mainstream personality that I equate him moreso with tweeting pseudo-intellectual shit about movies and philosophy than I do with science (which is kind of a shame, because I'll admit he is one smart motherfucker).
"Woah did you know that every war was caused by disagreements? And that Star Wars is fake because there's no sound in space?"
Wow Neil, fascinating stuff you've got there, real groundbreaking work.
I miss Sagan, that dude just seemed to be above trying to make science "cool 4 the kidz" like Nye and Tyson.
[editline]1st May 2017[/editline]
Not to mention that shit about how "oh, BB-8 would never be able to roll around on sand because he's a sphere, #checkmate Hollywood :^)" despite BB-8 being a practical effect that totally rolled around on sand just fine.
I wanted to give it a shot but now I'm afraid to watch the first episode. Guess I'll tough the first one out.
I really hope it was some PC SJW schlock that couldn't get aired without some label that could make it through marketing and they just begged Bill to help them.

I try to ignore his Twitter, honestly, lol.
Nobody does that. Like, this is the thing, it's such a fucking non-issue that most of the time what people call cultural appropriation is just a byproduct of cultural exchange and international trade, made controversial through manufactured outrage. We've long transcended the era where shit like minstrel shows or The Mikado were OK, there are very few circumstances of legitimately condescending approaches to other cultures in the modern day, and they are overwhelmingly decried.
More importantly, the strictest definition of "cultural appropriation", IE using someone else's culture, is indistinguishable from learning from or otherwise finding value other cultures.
As with all things, it can be done right, and it can be done wrong. And also as with all things, just because it can be done wrong doesn't mean literally everyone should be actively prohibited from doing it. Which really strikes at the heart of the intersectional crusader mindset. Equality is easier to manifest by dragging people down, rather than building everyone else up, after all.

I find different people can get along better when they can comfortable make jokes at each other's expense and all get a laugh out of it. The problem isn't really people constantly making jokes about whitey, the problem is that it's no longer a two way street. And a lot of the bad actors have just started expressing open resentment, because apparently that's ok now.

Like, I got a good buddy from nigeria, and we take racial digs at each other all the time, and it's just harmless tongue in cheek shit talking. But shit like this? Nuh uh. Not ok. But in a world where a brilliant scientist gets publically humiliated for wearing a shirt with a cartoonish woman on it, despite his fantastic accomplishements, here we have a potential political power saying "white people should get shut down" and nobody gets pissed off.
Something's wrong here, and that's the real issue.
What i wanted was information on climate change and what i got was dancing bread and being told that i was a bad person for being white and male.
Go fuck yourself.

I have really bad news for you.
wearing a shirt with a cartoonish woman on it,
A shirt drawn printed and sewn for him by a woman with her own art.
