http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hugbox A hugbox is a derogatory term for an environment, usually on the internet, in which a group with similar interests gathers to discuss topics in what they intend to be a safe, comforting, and confrontation-free environment. What they intend to be a "safe space" almost always turns into a circle-jerk of forced consensus and ends with every member repeatedly expressing the exact same opinion to each other, no matter the topic. Since the community is founded on unconditional love and support no matter how much of a tool a person is, these communities tend to attract tools and rational and useful advice is usually a rarity. Moderators of these groups are usually extremely militant and do not tolerate even the slightest dissenting opinion. Members of these groups are usually so hypersensitive that the moment a contrary opinion appears the entire community explodes in a total drama shitstorm. Welcome to our community of self-diagnosed Asperger's sufferers. We have all read the wikipedia article and decided that we have Asperger's and thus have an excuse for being anti-social and thinking we're smarter than everyone else. Let's take turns talking about ourselves and how smart we are and how terrible the world is to us, and after we're done everyone else will tell us how brave we are. NO TROLLING. - average hugbox community. TLDR: Oversensitive feelings over the internet.
most of /vg/ is a shithole of tripfagging and hugboxing. Seriously, pop in to Katawa Shoujo General # 43028925 and tell me those people are having an intelligent discussion about video games. although that's not universal. Some of the generals are alright. I pop in there for /smtg/ and /hgg/ sometimes, although /mgg/ just turns into posting gay pics of ocelot and big boss and quoting revengeance most of the time.
...is that really a thing you should just be casually mentioning?
I don't get why people talk about sites like 4chan or tumblr like they're one whole group. Tumblr has a section of crazies and 4chan has a section of assholes. I didn't even know about the raid until like 3 days after it started, and I spend far too much time on /toy/ and Tumblr.
Hard to describe, but i'd exemplify it like this: Non-hugbox discussion: "I love X" "Fuck you, X is shit because of these reasons" "I think you're missing the point, X has a lot of good parts to it too" "Maybe, but the bad parts make it unplayable for me, 0/10" hugbox discussion: "I love X" "I agree" "Yeah me too!" "X is my favorite, anon, you're so smart!" "Oh my god, last week someone told me they didn't like X" "Really? Oh my gosh don't cry, i'll post it on my blog for support" [editline]9th July 2014[/editline] It's like a creepier version of a circlejerk
I use Tumblr a lot and I've never seen anything besides the first example

Both 4chan and Tumblr have their fair share of hugbox communities. Some go as far as to doxx people (or at least threaten to) and/or tell people to kill themselves for having a different opinion. But what I find kinda funny is that some Tumblr users see Tumblr as their "safe space" where they can "express their opinions and/or vent without fear of harm" which is complete BS because Tumblr is a PUBLIC micro-blogging website where anyone with a computer and stable internet connection can access. The only true ways they can have a "safe space blog to vent" on the internet is to either password protect their Tumblr blog or set up a private blog. P.S. No I'm not condoning trolling or harassing people at all and I know these people are a minority but they're often a very vocal minority.
What does "hugbox" mean
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hug_machine basically anyone who uses the word "hugbox" in a joking and demeaning manner is an ableist shitposter
"she's a drug addicted whore, and he's dead" quite possibly the best line I've ever heard. this guy is a god
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hug_machine basically anyone who uses the word "hugbox" in a joking and demeaning manner is an ableist shitposter
Strange I'd argue that anyone that uses the term ableist in a serious manner more than likely is in need of a hugbox.
most of /vg/ is a shithole of tripfagging and hugboxing. Seriously, pop in to Katawa Shoujo General # 43028925 and tell me those people are having an intelligent discussion about video games.
Yea but the alternative is go to /v/ and never have a real discussion cuz erryone's flinging shit at you. That's what usually happens in my experience idk if your's is any different
Strange I'd argue that anyone that uses the term ableist in a serious manner more than likely is in need of a hugbox.
it isn't a word that entered the english lexicon on a sunday night a few days ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ableism
it isn't a word that entered the english lexicon on a sunday night a few days ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ableism
We've been here before:
i really don't understand the whole tumblr "triggers" thing, it really seems like it's just an attempt for edgy-ness/sympathy by being a sufferer of pseudo-PTSD.

It's a formerly obscure concept that had its value drained through a sudden surge of self-diagnoses.
When the internet tries to redefine a thing, that thing usually ends up losing its worth. Autism, transgenderism, triggers, rape culture, ableism... social justice didn't invent any of these things, but it took charge over how its audience would interpret them. You can't weaponize a word and expect no consequences from it. So when you call people who use the term "hugbox" ableists you are turning ableism into something it isn't, because in reality what they were talking about has very little to do with disabled people or their relation with others. And why should anyone care that you're calling them something that has been stripped of its meaning?
I just stay out of shit threads. Anything about console wars, anything about e-celebs etc. You can have some nice threads sometimes.
/v/ is strange place, someone can start a "10/10 women in vidya" thread, and it will be derrailed into an actual discussion about videogames, and a thread that starts off as "discuss you favorite final fantasy" can be derrailed into a discussion about the importance of the pacific theater in WWII.
i just stay in /s/
Strange I'd argue that anyone that uses the term ableist in a serious manner more than likely is in need of a hugbox.
Because there shouldn't be a word for the discrimination of the disabled based on their disability???
That's not quite the same, internet in-joke memes were never really suggested to be exactly the same thing as idea memes by anyone, even if they do share some similarities. What really wears a word down is when masses of people are claiming that it's supposed to mean what they want it to mean, and that's exactly what happened with words like trigger and ableism.

They create elaborate identities around themselves and use those as a shield against everyone. Then when someone makes a joke they dislike or says something that offends them they can scream oppression and get coddled by other hypersensitive people. "You can't call me stupid, I'll have you know that my headmate Pegglesworth the 10th suffers from PTSD and is easily triggered after someone through a bottlecap next to xer when zhe was only 8 moon cycles old. By calling me dumb you are insulating Pegglesworth and its abelist, biggoted, intolerant, and transphobic. Educate yourself pissbaby. I just can't right now, I just literally cant."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hug_machine basically anyone who uses the word "hugbox" in a joking and demeaning manner is an ableist shitposter
Please tell me you're using that word ironically.
I use Tumblr a lot and I've never seen anything besides the first example
I see it when someone says something 'wrong' and get the the 'truth' laid down on them. Then everyone is like "OMG THIS^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^" Over and over again or saying 'Always Reblog'.
Please tell me you're using that word ironically.
ableism is a thing people do get discriminated against for disabilities, it's just that tumblr(like they do with all -ist words) throw it around all willy nilly
What the fuck is doctor wholock Is it like Merlin mixed with the Doctor or something? This sounds like I'm trying to make a shitty joke but I really have no idea and it sounds retarded.
Who the hell discriminates against people with disabilities? Seriously that sounds like something only sociopaths would do.
People discriminate about a whole lot of things people can't help. Pricks exist
so I might not be reading this entirely clear, but some of you are saying that you cant take Ableism seriously because of some connotation that YOU yourself have attached to the word????? brb, I'll just got to Social Justice Headquarters and talk to the head of Diction and tell them we have to change our entire vocabulary because someone on the internet said it's hard to take us seriously for using those words. oh wait no that's completely fucking dumb, if you're honestly associating the discrimination of the disabled with some bellend otherkin you saw on a badly compressed jpeg on an internet forum then you may need to consider actually spending some time looking at how you perceive thing and perhaps interacting with actual disabled people. All you're doing is the equivalent of dismissing a game entirely of a alpha screenshot taken with a camera phone at E3. [editline]9th July 2014[/editline]
Who the hell discriminates against people with disabilities? Seriously that sounds like something only sociopaths would do.
Mental disabilities don't anywhere near the level of support from the public that physical ones do. That's why stuff like Autistic and Retarded are considered insults.
Haha oh wow people on FP really thought ableism was just some social justice warrior codeword shit from Tumblr. These threads are amazing even if the content creator is a right prick.
you may need to consider actually... interacting with actual disabled people.
But I already am by visiting this forum. This isn't about pushing people in wheelchairs down steep inclines its about SJWs online using buzzwords they read on wikipedia to somehow make themselves exempt from being called a retard when they are acting like a retard.
Please tell me you're using that word ironically.
ableism isn't a fantasy buzzword that was invented on tumblr fyi. there are people who legit discriminate against others on the basis of mental conditions they have
ableism is a thing people do get discriminated against for disabilities, it's just that tumblr(like they do with all -ist words) throw it around all willy nilly
And Ownederd wasn't throwing it around willy nilly? [editline]9th July 2014[/editline]
ableism isn't a fantasy buzzword that was invented on tumblr fyi. there are people who legit discriminate against others on the basis of mental conditions they have
So someone mocking the term "hugbox" is an "ableist?" Jesus Christ grow a pair.
ableism isn't a fantasy buzzword fyi. there are people who legit discriminate against others on the basis of mental conditions they have
Which is fine but it has nothing to do with the word hugbox or people who use it, so you had no reason to bring it up at all.
And Ownederd wasn't throwing it around willy nilly? [editline]9th July 2014[/editline] So someone mocking the term "hugbox" is an "ableist?" Jesus Christ grow a pair.
well considering that phrase has been abused to hell and back as a demeaning word to trivalize one's issues: yeah i'm going to call someone out as an emotionally stunted butthole (and quite plainly tell them that they need to grow the hell up) if they use it in that fashion.
"A hug machine, also known as a hug box, a squeeze machine, or a squeeze box, is a deep-pressure device designed to calm individuals with autism spectrum disorders. " Man, I may suck at maths but putting 1 and 1 together here it's almost like you're suggesting someone go use a thing designed for people with autism you might actually be calling them autistic??????
