The "hugbox" people use on the internet is a slang term, you idiots. Nobody even acknowledged the existence of hug machines until you apparently decided to ignore the half a page of people giving the same definition and link to an obscure wikipedia article about a literal machine.

Sorry I don't find it funny when people take the piss of the autism spectrum, just like how I don't find it funny when people take the piss of coloured people or people of different genders or sexualities. I'm not diagnosed with anything on the autism spectrum, the only thing I'm diagnosed with is dyslexia which is frankly so mild I don't even realise it's a thing.
If you think people need a sense of humour about these things, put yourself in their position. They're probably a bit insecure about their disability and don't really feel to good when they become the butt of a joke or something required in their treatment becomes a butt of a joke. It's not funny when people joke about Chemotherapy machines, why should it be funny when people joke about a Hug Machine?

They're likely criticizing it for people redefining it to refer to the mentally disabled, even though it had a different connotation and use on the internet.
Context-wise, it's on the same level as "circle-jerk". They're both used on the internet as a negative term used to describe unanimous agreement, but it's not necessarily referred to the disabled. Just like "stupid", "dumb", or "silly".
