The only similarity is that some of the characters have kidney beans for heads and they have consistent line thickness.
There has to be other ways to design an art style or character. Why must every recent cartoon have a kidney bean shaped head short protagonist. Before someone says inspiration. There is a difference between inspiration and slightly changing how the artstyle or character looks and calling it new and original
This is really weird.
It looks like they took the trio in their original style and put them in a new style. They stand out in a bad way. Am I the only who thinks Buttercup's VA actually sounds like the old Blossom?
I'm happy they didn't went with the too artistic style from the past though.
Not sure how to feel about the first villain and "his toxic masculinity".
This looks terrible. I'm sorry.
The artstyle is so incredibly jarring, and the contrasts between the steven universe esque art and the og powerpuff girls is a terrible contrast. Do I even need to mention the VA?
Yeah Gumball's artsyle is as different from the other CN shows as you can possibly get.
To be fair Gumball and his family are intentionally drawn in a similar style to all the Cartoon Network stuff. Every character is a different animation style, it would be odd for a Cartoon Network cartoon to not have a 'typical' character in a show where every character has a different art style.
Does Cartoon Network only have one animation studio that only knows how to animate in one style?
You coulda said that when the original show was airing and Craig McCracken and Genndy Tartakovsky and their little crew pretty much designed every show on the network. There was never a time where animation wasn't homogenous and segregated by generation.
The problem with Cartoon Network's modern stuff isn't that it all looks the same, a lot of their cartoons have looked the same over the years. The problem is their current art style feels really cheap and it's the flat shading and single thickness lines that does it, there's no depth in their scenes these days.
Clerence and uncle grandpa, sure but... have you really seen Steven universe? The extremely varied line weight is like that shows whole thing.

That's mostly because a lot of storyboard artists/show creators come from other shows on CN. It doesn't help that there's only like 2 studios in south korea that do the animation.

Well, better than I was expecting, but it looks like any other generic CalArts single-line-width cartoon now.
You're right. the ppg look like they used to, however everything else looks so round a bubbly, like every other cartoon network show does. PPG used to be very... idk angular, with sharp points and stuff.
i hope samurai jack doesnt look like this
it will won't it
Just not feeling Buttercup's voice. If Bubble's voice isn't anywhere near her original, I probably won't bother with this show.
this is bubbles VA

I do admit. Moat generations of Cartoon Network shows looked very similar. But there was still a lot variety.

Not all of their shows look the same, but they do use a standard style at different times.
These days you have Uncle Grandpa, Clerence, Gravity Falls, Stephen from Stephen Universe, and the Watterson family in Gumball.
Back in the day you had Dexter's Lab, The Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, I Am Weasel, and Cow & Chicken.
Stephen Universe as a whole and Gumball are different, but so were Samurai Jack and Courage the Cowardly Dog.
i hope samurai jack doesnt look like this

Genndy is making it
so no

Adult Swim wouldn't allow that. The CN style of animation doesn't fit them.
Bob's Burgers' style of animation is probably my favorite of newer cartoons. It's super unique.

Isn't Gravity Falls a Disney show?
-snip-
I was wrong
I'd blame that on Adventure Time. Or Flapjack, since that's what AT came out of.

Yes. But IIRC its the show that kicked off this generation of animation and style.
Gumball is probably the last cartoon network cartoon which still has the humor like older cntoons (ex.foster home for imaginary friends and maybe a few others) and it does have some work into it when compared to the others.
In any case I was never really fan of a lot of cn shows but there's was really nothing else to watch so I still ended up "knowing" a few of them and I feel terrible about it (camp lazlow,my gym partner is a mokery and cramp twins good lord do I feel horrible that I actually managed to sit through those wish I could wipe my memory haha) I definitely learned that lesson when Flapjack and Chowder came along because damn never I ever watched a full episode of those, its like trash became self aware and was plastered on a screen.
I know they were basically copy cats of spongebob or ren and stimpy but hey I don't like those either so it all makes sense.
Well its a matter of opinion at the end of the day I guess, Megas XLR,Teen Titans,Xiaolin Showdown,Ben 10 and Generator Rex was the best shit to air on for sure. I know a few of these got rehashed but they are cardboards of their former selves.
v Sorry for hurting your feelings but hey it hurts me to look back now :ohno:
I liked Camp Lazlo :frown:

Fuck. With the exception of megas and teen titans, you have negative good taste
They're still having Mojo Jojo be part of the show right? Having a PPG reboot without Mojo is like having an EEnE reboot without Edd
i hope samurai jack doesnt look like this

if theres a single outline around a person they would miss the entire point of bringing back samurai jack
because samurai jack is all about gud art and gud story
The scene where she actually throws the guy looked super cheap.
Could the cheap animations we see happening a lot be because of how fast people are expecting their animators to produce for new episodes? Or rather, how fast the companies are pushing for them.
Good animation takes time and it seems like I see a lot of commercials about a new season starting almost immediately after the last one ended.
Why are cartoons still caught up in the 80s where hippies even existed

Don't even speak of an Ed Edd n' Eddy reboot, they might actually fucking do it. The original show is perfect as it is now, the movie was great and it even gave a point of closure for Eddy and the gang.

Yeah but I still don't know what she sounds like as Bubbles.
I mean I really liked it
That throw looked incredibly weak
