Reminds me of when I first heard Matlock, great stuff.
Where are you getting the idea that the point of it is to have dull lyrics?
I believe it's mainly that way to get the point across but with flow. It wouldn't be as harsh or true if it was all hidden meanings and "poetry".
He is not the best out there, and there are people who are more poetic than him for sure. But he still has flow, and his lyrics can be amazing from time to time.
I love freestyle, freestyling needs quick thinking and creativity, I use freestyle to find the best rapper out there. The better freestyler, the better rapper. This is just my opinion.
EXAMPLE OF AN AMAZING FREESTYLE:

I already knew it was going to be that song before I clicked the thread
heh the pregnant chick is wearing a suicide silence tshirt
I've listened to this like 12 times since I popped into the thread. The song is fucking awesome!
Is it bad that I don't see the difference between this and most other rap songs?
serius shit dude.

Maybe you didn't listen to the lyrics.
Im probably the only who didn't like this song, or Hopsin himself for that matter, at all.
This particular song panders to people who think the rap industry is dying or some shit, and that the majority of hip hop artists are just in it for the money. Regurgitating the same shit a lot of other rappers said years ago. Both B.I.G and Wu Tang had similar songs about how the industry is 'dying' and is filled with wannabe posers or whatever and each time they get massive praise for being enlightened or other such bullshit.
This just reeks of pretentiousness and hypocrisy. I heard other Hopsin material and he doesn't seem that far off from the people he seems to hate. Rapping about inane nonsense and wears contacts to appear edgy and threatening.
I dont fall for this "being real" shtick at all, and in my opinion it's just another way for him to appeal to the market that's tired of the mainstream stuff. If he's honest, good for him. But I doubt that.
Its surface level shit, hes just pointing the finger and blaming others whats that really gonna do? He even contradicts himself on about how "If the shoe fits..." then goes on to say at the end people are just rapping for money...? There are artists that deliver the same message way better.
and his 'message' is so tired, its been done to fucking death
Well since people dont seem to get it i'd say its still worth spreading. or are you a hipster about messages?

Truth flowing through poetry, around a good beat, is the strongest weapon this generation will produce; to thin those who disagree.
