IGN Recommends 8 Anime To Watch If You Love Video Games
214 replies, posted
In all honesty, Anime's preference for static angles and scenes (something that it inherited from Manga) makes most fighting scenes dull to watch. Repeating animations and the dreaded "Lines of quick movement" are about in most of it, because most Anime is made on a poor budget, in a tight deadline (in fact, animator is one of the lowest paying jobs in Japan, receiving less money than Student's stepend) - which means that a lot of shows look downright awful.
It doesn't mean that Anime is poorly animated trash by default - but a lot of it is, because it's an industry that has a huge throughput. Which, like most of industries (books, music, video games, films) is 90% trash.
Maybe I'm a naive sap, but I have trouble disliking any anime. I try to never take for granted the fact that so much effort goes into making it, all the stages and processes it goes through, all the people working on it, the very fact that people collectively drew thousands of frames so we could be entertained for a few minutes. Sure, the whole thing could be a low effort cash grab, but I always imagine there has to be at least one person that really tried their hardest. I get a bit sad when those thousands and thousands of man hours are basically wasted when people brush it off because "It's trash."
Shirobako is an anime about an anime studio, it deals with all that stuff. Very interesting, would recommend. Related to those posts about pay, here's a chart they made:

I'm already a bit turned off by that character design, but I love the idea.
As long as it's as cynical and honest as it looks.
Also, again, Jojo should not only be on that list, but in this thread, so

Just like the source material it's adapting, every fuckin pore of it oozes with style. Nothing on TV looks or sounds like this.
In the episodes that they allocate the budget to, that is
I'm talking about the overall animation quality and production values, such as:

I know not everyone cares about things like that, but I'm an hobbyist artist and those animations are really fluid with a very dynamic camera.
excuse me?

OPM has iconic fight scenes and animation.
That OPM fight was also done on a way smaller budget then the SAO fights.
And Mob Psycho 100 blows OPM away on animation quality and creativity on top of that, and OPM had a lot of talented animators working on it.

That show is not going to get nearly as much love and attention as it deserves because it isn't quite as attention grabbing and accessible as a superhero/action parody.
can this just be a thread for posting animation that's better than sword art online

If you love video games you'd spend time not watching anime because you'd be busy playing video games.
I started reading Light Novels more than watching anime(s) nowadays. Maybe I don't have enough time to finish the episode or show once I started it due to college classes. I'm probably going to take a look into these popular shows in which everyone seems to like/talk about currently(like Re:Zero and etc...) when I can.
So many modern animes nowadays are hard to follow. Like how do they expect me to remember all of these Japanese names when I can barely recall all of the Game of Thrones characters.
I just remember certain hairstyles and looks for some characters. Similarly, I can't even remember few of my new friends' name. They're not from America and it's fairly new to me. Can't blame yourself for not remembering it.
No love for .hack?

The only one I've seen is SIGN, and while it has a special place in my heart, it really isn't that good.
Great concept, alright characters, crippled by a threadbare budget and endless scenes of talking.
This is all the anime anyone needs in life.

right so one of my steam friends (who is a massive weeb and has quite possibly watched every anime known to man let me just say right off the bat) heard from one of my other friends that i started watching anime and gave me a few suggestions, what're your guys opinions on these?
Fate/zero and Fate/stay night (I had already seen some clips from both of these and thought it looked neato)
Black Bullet
Death Note
Kill la Kill
and Berserk
which are good and which are bad?
Berserk I hear is really good. I'm talking about the 90's adaptation, not the CGI show or the CGI movies. Kill la Kill is insanely fun, in my top ten imo, but you really shouldn't start off with that. It's like drinking Crystal Head vodka for the first time after just turning 21; It's gonna get dizzy real fast from the beginning and you'll have no idea what's going on. Like Berserk, I hear that the Fate series is good, but you should start with Fate/zero first.
Berserk is an amazing manga, but the anime is kind of a slideshow
I would recommend just reading the comic
Death Note is a pretty good one to start off with. Personally I think it's a lot better if you just pretend it ends after the first season, but that's just me being a jerkass.
if you want a fun fantasy thing, check out Rage of Bahamut. It's pretty great.

Out of those I would say Death Note.
Don't watch Berserk for now, the new 2016 version sucks and the old version is not easy to get into, it didn't age very well.
Death Note it's a great anime to start with, it has an interesting premise, very good characters and it's overall solid and consistent.
Fate/Zero is also a good choice, especially if you are looking for something more action oriented.
Kill la Kill or Black Bullet I wouldn't recommend at all to start with, the first is very unique in terms of style and plot while the second is simply inferior to the other two.

jojo is really good to watch too, follows the books nearly 1 to 1 and is a great starting point.
If youre into books and want a lot more down to earth characters and phylisophical talk about actually growing up, solanin and goodnight pun pun and fucking excellent reads that have won young adult awards out the ass.
Even my friend who really doesn't like japanese art/shows/culture, absolutely loves both novels just for the characters/story alone.

It indeed is very lore heavy and not very actiony but its a nice change of pace IMO.

Just think, it could be the last 2 episodes of evangelion.
Read Yostuba&!
that's an order
I've watched and liked a few. As a whole; not really my cup of tea but that's just me. I don't like most cartoons anyways I suppose, except for a few exceptions.

If you want to get in to animation you might want to consider watching some movies first.
There is definitely appeal to series but movies are easier to digest so you can watch a couple and see if its your thing first.

Steins;Gate is insanely good, watch it all the way through even if you don't like it at first, you will love it by the end of it.
Darker than Black is really cool too
Also, ping pong the animation is an extremely good watch that is a complete story in one season.

funimation also has all of them for free on youtube, and the soundtrack is pgreat.

Eh the book is better.
Darker than black somehow never ended up becoming satisfying in the end in my opinion.

rage of bahamut is a good show. feels like a movie a lot of the time. I strongly recommend the dub, it's A+.

Sorry but Death Note shits the bed halfway through.
Code Geass was pretty good IMO, even though the character designs are really weird looking.
It's pretty sad how Anime turn a lot of people into pedophiles and faggots to be honest.
Here's a perfect example what Anime has done to Japanese men:
