I mean, just because the VN is better doesn't mean the show isn't also amazing. It's one of the only shows I own the Blu-Ray of. That said, if you enjoy the show, also check out the VN because it has more depth to it.

Cromartie is a little out there and isn't necessarily the most coherent thing. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but it's not in the same kind of genre as the rest of the shows being discussed which are more story driven.
The show is still amazing, the VN is just that much better. Plus the alternate endings are amazing[sp]ly dark[/sp].
Obvious spoilers

The only anime I like is King of the Hill.

I spy a worrying lack of bizarre adventures on that list

Prob because I haven't watched it. I read it like seven years ago though.
I would say to play the game first, but I don't think that's for casual fans. You can watch zero first, but I'll be really disappointed, do you want to make Hobbes disappointed?
Honestly, I would recommend Zero over Unlimited because it doesn't involve kids making stupid decisions.
right so one of my steam friends (who is a massive weeb and has quite possibly watched every anime known to man let me just say right off the bat) heard from one of my other friends that i started watching anime and gave me a few suggestions, what're your guys opinions on these?
Fate/zero and Fate/stay night (I had already seen some clips from both of these and thought it looked neato)
Black Bullet
Death Note
Kill la Kill
and Berserk
which are good and which are bad?
Don't watch Berserk. There's never been a good Berserk adaption. Pick up the Dark Horse translations because they're great. The fan translation is done by this group called the Hawks and it is BAD I doubt any of the them even knew japanese when translating.
Instead of watching Kill La Kill watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and then watch Kill La Kill. They're both pretty similar and done by mostly the same animators but TTGL is fantastic you'll love it
After reading this thread and watching Overlord I have decided to ignore people saying X anime is trash. Some of you guys seem to have really narrow/snobby standards.
This is fucking great. [Sort of NSFW]
It doesn't have to be a deep drama filled masterpiece, it can be just fun.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's the best thing ever or that everyone should enjoy it. I am just starting to get weary of people proclaiming X anime is atrocious or the worst thing ever, or people trying to convince others to stop watching series.

I also like Overlord. It ain't anything mind blowing but I found it fun to watch but obviously it's not going to get a second season because it isn't some shitty generic harem show that they can pander to the lowest common denominator. Interesting shows don't sell in Japan, with exceptions of course.
It's why No Game No Life also isn't getting another season when it deserves it.

It's getting a movie, that's a good substitute, right?
Also, I thought hating on NGNL was cool?
Pretty much when deciding what anime to watch just fucking ignore everyone's opinion on whether it's good or not and watch the first 3 episodes or so to decide if you like it. Of course that only works if the whole show is good and there are some shows that start of kinda lame then pick up but in general I've found that if by episode 3 you aren't invested in the show you should drop it.

It is? please tell me more!
Heh, i definitely remember a couple people in FA frothing at the mouth over it. I never got the hate with NGNL. All I remember as a criticism is "lol OP MC's so bad" even though they aren't OP they're just hyper intelligent but w/e.
I can't take this list seriously if they consider DanMachi good.

there's also that incident when the author got caught for plagiarising the art for the books, and that's a pretty serious offense in the industry
that might also be playing a part

Overlord was just boring to me. Fair enough if you liked it but all the characters were one dimensional and they just use the same joke repeatedly for the characters.

Adapts volume 6, a prequel story.

I forgot about that but still, all I care about is the anime.
i thought max scoville had good taste
what a sellout smh

Don't get me wrong, the bits with bone papa's minions are great. The problem is that the ratio of good content to "ainz walking around doing nothing" was just too skewed for me to recommend it.
It's why No Game No Life also isn't getting another season when it deserves it.
NGNL formula got pretty stale near the end for me. I can't imagine a second season without some innovation. Granted I only watched it for the humor.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned Neon Genesis Evangelion, which is a really deep anime heavily inspired by Freud's philosophy, it may be off putting for someone expecting a standard mecha anime, but once you get a grasp of it you'll be really surprised. (Avoid watching the "Rebuild" movies first because even if they tell the same story they are really different from the original show)

"really deep" translates to "I(Anno) used all this religious symbolism and lingo because it looks and sounds cool". The movies are different tho, they're actually good unlike the show and I would recommend that people watch them instead. The story is different for starters after the second movie so that's an improvement and Shnji isn't a git anymore after the first movie which is basically just a condensed version of the show but better. Oh yeah, and the movies art is much better than the shows.

Seriously, whenever someone recommends something because it's "really deep" I just laugh because it mainly means that it's trying to be smarter than it actually is. But hey, if you like it more power to ya!
watch madoka ok peace out
watch madoka ok peace out
most depressing magical girl anime ever
Except that maybe I wasn't talking about religious symbolism? It's deep because the characters actually feel relatable, shinji acts like an ordinary person would in those situations. I can understand if you say that you didn't like the show and you prefer more action oriented stuff like the Rebuild movies, but you can't deny that Anno actually put a lot of thought in his story and characters.
A friend of mine recommended Gunsmith Cats as a manga to read, but there are no complete scans anywhere online.
I haven't read Gunsmith Cats, but i did watch the 3 episode OVA and Riding Bean, which came out first and is set in the same universe (as the anime at least) and both of those were good.
you can't deny that Anno actually put a lot of thought in his story and characters.
Sure I can.

Evangelion isn't about the technobabble or the lore, it's about the characters.
the movies have shit CGI, over saturated colors, one dimensional characters, and by 3.0 they just shit the bed completely and turn into an absurd cartoon
the original series+end of evangelion is a fucking masterpiece and I find the idea that they're in any way eclipsed by the facile and insipid movies personally offensive

NGE has excellent character development. I see a lot of people criticizing Shinji but he actually acts like a child and his reactions feel appropriate for the situation he currently is in. It also has great interaction between the main characters.
The art in the originals holds up if you ignore the few last episodes. When compared to other shows of the era they have some sequences that are downright amazing.
The movies are still good but I feel they don't allow enough time to develop some of the relationships between the characters.

Who gives a shit if it's "deep" or not, it's a well-written show.
[editline]3rd September 2016[/editline]
And Shinji isn't a pussy, anybody who thinks that has managed to completely miss the point and misinterpret the show to an almost comical point, where they get upset at the character for not acting like a wish fulfillment power fantasy character and think that being in the robot is cool and great and this fourteen year old isn't banging the waifus so they're a wimp, instead of how it it actually is in the show where piloting the giant fragile robot that the pilot can feel all of the pain of and is mutilated routinely sucks and everybody around you is a mysterious asshole.

Anno is known for down playing a lot of what he does. He got majorly depressed during NGE and you can tell when this starts. You could also interpret the christian imagery as him blaming god for his issues. NGE is deep because it's a mixture of exploring the minds of the charactes and the creator. There's also EoE but that'd be too long to talk about
