it's irrelevant if the quality of his videos has improved, because youtube has utterly exploded this guy has fallen to the bottom of the pile, i don't think it's necessarily indicative of an issue with youtube (there are definitely issues with subs, but i don't think they can be blamed) look at redlettermedia for instance. Less than 500k subs but they consistently get high views 200k+ on their longest content the rant comes across to me as a little fish that was previously in a little pond, but now that pond is a sea and he's still a little fish there's nothing about his channel that i find unique or interesting, it looks like a lot of other channels
this another example is anthony fantano, near amount of subs like this dude but gets a pretty good amount of views purely depending on the artist he's reviewing and if the track/album is relevant i agree that the algorithms are fucking stupid but i think he needs to come up with something fresh FRED was one of the most soaring youtubers, he was the first to get 1m subs but he pretty much died off when he signed over to nickelodeon but not even that, his fanbases humour grew up so quickly that it became cringe, he never adapted
I've noticed a lot of issues with the subscription over the years. Such as * Subscriptions randomly being hidden, or not easy to access anymore. * Subscriptions tab simply not functioning, not showing the stuff you've subscribed to * Subscription tab not showing actual latest content. For a while I was watching one channel and subscribed to stay updated. I checked the tab often and it showed no new videos. Eventually a friend linked me a video from him and I see that he's been regularly producing content, and I am still subscribed, but it won't show me any of his videos anyway. What the fuck? All of those above made me just stop using it entirely. I use the subscriptions as a list of people I might go back to check out because I know the damn system doesn't work.
im not going to remove adblock just because your """career""" as a youtuber doesnt make you enough money, guy how many more people are we going to see cowering behind youtube careers whilst begging for money in the same breath claiming that it's a legitimate fucking career and not just a damn hobby. youtube made a way for you to get money for your views and they hold all the cards to decide what to do with the experimental system they have put in place. just because you made bad life decisions to base your entire income and livelihood on creating youtube videos that have fallen from popularity doesnt mean that im going to finance you. get an actual job and make videos as a hobby without giving a shit about their success like it has always been and how it should be. people who claim to be "pouring their lives" into making videos are so full of shit, and having the impudence to rant about not getting enough money for that makes it even more pathetic.
at least buy youtube red so you have an excuse to use adblock without fucking over channels.
I haven't experienced any of the above issues with my subscriptions. I use Youtube everyday, and I agree that the front page algorithms are bogus, but I've worked around it.
The subscription page only shows me 3 videos uploaded today, unless I refresh, then I see more than 20 videos... Good, I love missing out on content!!!
Fuck, I used to watch that guy's videos all the time but the past few years I kinda forgot he existed. I wonder if he slowly slipped away from my mind as a result of these changes. Also that background music reminds me of Explosions in the Sky
The shitty algorithm used to deliver content to subs is a problem but it's not the main cause with any of this. It's just a normal cycle. Years from now big names like iDubbbz, FilthyFrank, and h3h3 likely will suffer the same fate. Eventually people just get burnt out on watching them. New content creators flow in that they sub to, and that's where they spend most of their time. With older subbed content still being delivered, just stuck at the bottom only to be dug up at a later date.
I haven't experienced any of the above issues with my subscriptions. Actually makes me wonder what they A/B test every day thinking of it. There's so many systems they could be applying to a subset of users.
Oh look, it's one of those "Boo hoo, nobody watches my videos anymore so it's YouTube's fault" videos. Cry me a river.
To be honest I did wonder why now and again I'd realise I missed a bunch of videos from people I was subscribed to - YouTube simply never showed me. Kinda sucky.
Oh look, it's one of those "Boo hoo, nobody watches my videos anymore so it's YouTube's fault" videos. Cry me a river. Most people don't even use that subscription/homepage shit, and for good reason. If you want people to watch your videos, then make good content. Otherwise move on to something else.
man, i love it when people just demonstrate how ignorant they are like this
So that's why my viewership sucks and why I might get 63 people watching my videos out of the 545 total subscribers count and why channels I have subscribed to in the past I stopped getting a notification as to them putting out content even though they clearly do put out content.
So that's why my viewership sucks and why I might get 63 people watching my videos out of the 545 total subscribers count and why channels I have subscribed to in the past I stopped getting a notification as to them putting out content even though they clearly do put out content.
Idk man I have 38 subscribers and 82 views on my most recent video
I'm subscribed to 900 channels on Youtube... Holy shit, I have no chance in hell of ever knowing if I'm missing content on any of them unless I see it posted on Facepunch or from a third party. This situation is FUCKED UP for power users like me. [editline]12th June 2016[/editline] And that's AFTER I've been unsubscribing from 100 channels that felt very superfluous over the last few years, too. I don't THINK I've missed videos from any channels but there is literally no way of checking unless I verify each channel individually which would be terribly time-consuming.
Things seem to just outright disappear from the watch history, or not get put there. It's annoying.
I haven't had any videos I've watched in my History section in years unless I watched the video on mobile, it's retarded
wait wtf YouTubers don't get money if I have adblock on? I thought they got revenue from time watched, or views.
wait wtf YouTubers don't get money if I have adblock on? I thought they got revenue from time watched, or views.
They get money from time watch when the viewer has Youtube Red, but otherwise it's just based on add clicks.
Skippable ads are fine. Wish adblock could make that distinction.
im not going to remove adblock just because your """career""" as a youtuber doesnt make you enough money, guy how many more people are we going to see cowering behind youtube careers whilst begging for money in the same breath claiming that it's a legitimate fucking career and not just a damn hobby. youtube made a way for you to get money for your views and they hold all the cards to decide what to do with the experimental system they have put in place. just because you made bad life decisions to base your entire income and livelihood on creating youtube videos that have fallen from popularity doesnt mean that im going to finance you. get an actual job and make videos as a hobby without giving a shit about their success like it has always been and how it should be. people who claim to be "pouring their lives" into making videos are so full of shit, and having the impudence to rant about not getting enough money for that makes it even more pathetic. Throughout the entire video this guy makes some valid points. While it starts off with his channel, he goes on to show that even the most subscribed guy on YouTube suffers from it. I don't know why these things happen but the point made about the algorithm seems to have some truth to it. If you use LeafyIsHere as an example, you will see that in recent months the guy has gained subscribers at an unprecedented rate. This can be attributed to numerous things such as his daily uploads, videos longer than ten minutes, and clickbait thumb/titles. Several YouTubers have pointed his style out in an effort to ridicule said algorithm. I'm not quite sure what could be done about this if anything.
Oh look, it's one of those "Boo hoo, nobody watches my videos anymore so it's YouTube's fault" videos. Cry me a river.
Did you even watch the video? Because that's not entirely what this is
For a TL;DW for people that jump at the title I'd say "The way YT handles subscriptions these days is making it harder for exposure to already existing fans" They're absolutely right. I remember when "subscribing" meant getting an email every upload and seeing notifications every time I open Youtube's homepage. Now it's basically useless. I check manually by going to profiles these days. Plus the Adblock is dipping revenue by a large margin [editline]12th June 2016[/editline] I will say I dislike patrion exclusive content though.
Did you even watch the video? Because that's not entirely what this is
He managed to show some self-awareness 1/3 through the video when he briefly mentions sourcing views from outside YouTube (reddit, here, etc.) but he doesn't complete the thought. He instead opted to go back to whining about how shitty/big YouTube has become. If you think YouTube's subscription model is so shitty, then get your views from a different website. A website can only get so big before it jumps the shark. If you're not willing adapt, then I have no pity for you.
A website can only get so big before it jumps the shark. If you're not willing adapt, then I have no pity for you.
No one needs your pity, however people always need your empathy.
I think patreon is a great idea for content creators. It allows consumers to directly give money to the creator.
If you think YouTube's subscription model is so shitty, then get your views from a different website.
And what site would that be? Considering that YouTube is the only major video based website. You can't count Facebook because that consists of mostly stolen videos from YouTube and shoves silent videos in everyones feeds to boost global view counts. And Dailymotion/Vimeo only cater to specific audiences.
Rate me dumb (User was banned for this post ("Asking for ratings" - Craptasket))
Well I can tell he's right about subscriptions. Mostly my home page is filled up with shit I don't want to watch, with the occasional useful suggestion. Would prefer if the home tab had a separate area for all your subscriptions instead of just dumping them somewhere on the page.
I haven't used any part of youtube beyond hitting direct links and looking at my sub feed in over 5 years now. He's right really. I only find new vids and channels through forums now and reddit/4chan. I don't care to/have the time to search through you tube, and the algorithm changes he mentioned sure didn't help with that.
I'm still not sure how my subscription list is arranged on my YT homepage. Is it channels with newest videos on top? Channels with most unwatched videos? Newest most unwatched videos? Is it alphabetical? When does it become alphabetical? Also why can't I search my subscriptions by name on the frontpage? I want to see if that specific channel has added any new videos, I don't want to scroll down an entire list to find that one hidden channel and I don't want to "manage my subscriptions" just to find that basic information. A tiny search bar would be more than enough.
