If the way to keep viewers is through external sites like Reddit, why not go to external sites like Reddit? YouTube needs to step up their game for sure, but if it's your livelihood you [i]need[/i] to adapt.

Nothing else would be needed to be done. But then again, there will be viewers who don't really sign up. For that, Youtube will have to create a system for them too, like 4chan does have
