the bullshit about shrine of amana that Hbomberguy spouts is giving me an aneurysm - it feels like he didn't play that area i bought DS2 on PS3 when it came out, and shrine of amana is where I quit the game: i think that mauler actually missed a couple more critiques you've got the extreme range of the casters, meaning you can't hope to lock onto them until you're in firing range of multiple, combined with their huge magic resistance meaning they take basically no damage from magic (which he mentioned) but in the release version, this zone was so bullshit they actually had to nerf the projectile turning speed (https://www.reddit.com/r/DarkSouls2/comments/2pcbsi/did_the_shrine_of_amana_used_to_be_harder/) their projectiles were so ridiculous that they actually turned round corners of cover to hit you (combined with wonky hitboxes that would catch you in rolls because they long) i haven't watched the whole series yet, i'm only 5 videos in, but the fact that harris tries to sweep shrine of amana under the rug with "just summon for it" and "it's difficult get over it" is so absolutely predictable because SoA is an absolutely exemplar of how DS2's design direction was so much weaker than DS1's. i quit the PS3 release version at that point because I realised that they weren't about crafting an interesting area, they were about crafting a shitload of arbitrarily hard areas because "fuck dark souls is so hard!!!!" oh also as mentioned in that reddit thread, i think they also fired from outside of your render distance so the enemies weren't even being rendered before they were firing at you
Dark Souls 2 was worth it, solely because it led to the creation of Happy Souls.
I feel like he's just the left wing equivalent of Sargon. He has these long rambling videos that assume the other side of the argument is up to no good and therefore the argument never ends in a satisfying way and both sides think the other one is an asshole. I was convinced of this when I watched his Sargon video, I noticed a fair amount of criticisms he rightly had for Sargon were pretty easily applicable to him as well.
If you're talking about the video I think you are, his main argument was that Sargon dishonestly acts like a centrist, while he doesn't pretend to be anything other than left-wing.
looked on twitter and hbomberguy's response to this video was basically "it's 9 hours long wooow" i used to watch his videos but after watching through this series from start to finish, it has made me detest the man
Man, 9 hours? That's a lot of effort, something that I doubt hbomberguy much into his critique
I thought dark souls 2 was fun for what it was and im not a fan of hbomber but honestly who has the time to watch 9 hours of sentence by sentence breakdown of an argumentitive essay? Its just bad formatting regardless of how much effort you put into it, its just not accessable.
I disagree. Its extremely accessible, especially since it's broken down into parts. Parts that are logically paced according to Hbomberguys points. I agree a 9-hour marathon of this series is a daunting task, but if it's treated as a podcast, or digested over the course of a couple days, it's fine. If anything the sheer brevity of criticisms Mauler can make on HBomberGuys analysis speaks more towards how shit the latter's video is in the first place than Maulers poor formatting
I totally get the 9 hour objection for anyone other than hbomberguy, who has consistently sacrificed brevity for creating a complete picture i feel that as someone who creates long form content, he has a responsibility to actually engage with and respond to critiques - by refusing to do so, it's tacitly admitting that he doesn't have faith in his argument here he frequently lambastes people like PJW for being hacks, vomiting out opinions without doing the work, so I guess it's extremely disappointing for him to not take the L when he's confronted by someone who has done the work (more work than him) if this was 9 hours of bullshit, I would totally agree, but it isn't - it's nine hours of high quality analysis and argument, and if harris had a shred of decency here, he would have responded meaningfully it makes me think that harris only takes on "intellectual heavyweights" like paul joseph watson and sargon because they're low hanging fruit, easy enough to embarrass, but he's incapable of getting over that very, very low bar

I'm just now getting into "In Defense of Dark Souls 2". Before I waste another hour, does he blow all his good points in the first 20 minutes? During the first part I can actually agree with him on some points about the health system and enemies, but I am becoming unironically triggered now that he's implying that the Dark Souls 2 map is better.
