Dat galaxy map
I am excited but does anyone know what the actual... game is? I know there is combat and exploration, but what exactly will be the meat of the game?

If I recall correctly, the "goal" of the game is to get to the center of the universe.
I believe they said that players will start out in the outer-most fringes of the universe, where things are relatively tame, but as you move in toward the center of the universe, things get more and more chaotic. He mentioned it very briefly in this video actually, when talking about the creatures, saying that more exotic creatures will appear near the center.
However, I believe that is much less a goal for a single person, as a goal for the community. I believe the per-person goals will be more of just exploring the universe.
I believe they also have plans for more immediately things, like factions and questions and such, but they want to get the generation down first.
And of course, don't quote me on any of this. If anyone has any corrections, please feel free to provide them. I'm just going off my terribly flawed memory. :v:
It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
Why destroy and recreate stuff rapidly, including the things that will be the same when you come back, i.e. the environment? I know it's to create actually limitless worlds, but that seems very un-optimal and will put a lot of unnecessary pressure on the CPU and RAM when you could just drop it into storage? Maybe something to do with the PS4's limits, idk.
Hard disk I/O is the slowest process of computing right after networking. Depending on the calculations, it's not hard to visualize them being faster than I/O from disk.
as I understood it, they're only simulating a single galaxy.
Afaik they only have a single galaxy right now, but they'll be working on a universe for final release.
Wasn't the studio for this game flooded a while back and they lost a LOT of their progress and basically had to start over from scratch?
Yep.
I love how little bullshit there is in this, it's an actual behind the scenes video. There's no juvenile attempts at marketing, just a game developer talking about developing the game he wants to make.
Honestly it's sad that this is a such a big deal, but I agree.
We've seen a lot of the procedurally generated stuff, animals, planets, etc. now I'm really curious about the level of interaction with these things. What is there to gameplay other than exploring and shooting spaceships and animals? I wish they did a video on that.

You're kidding! That's phenominal. If that's what they're doing, I will be so very happy. I love space games where you can just explore forever. It makes me feel like a kid at Christmas.

Nope. The supposed goal for the game is to get to the center of the universe.

But I imagine that there's nothing stopping you from just exploring.
I remember the very first time I got to the space stage in Spore, I was completely just mind-boggled at how much there was to see, I had to take a few minutes to look at it all, to soak it all in. I've got a damn good hunch that this game can give me that feeling again. I just wish they'd at least hint at a possible release date, even an estimated quarter would do. :c

Of course not. However he said that things will get more exotic and interesting the deeper into the universe you go, so that's probably what you'd want to do.
Nope. The supposed goal for the game is to get to the center of the universe.
Well, that could just refer to the center of the "Game universe". We don't know that he literally meant an entire universe worth of galaxies.

To be honest, with the approach they're taking, it won't be that hard to move on from a single galaxy to the whole Universe. Once they've nailed it down once, the rest is just applying the process on another level.
I never meant to imply otherwise, just that they so far have only set in concrete a single galaxy and never said they'd be doing an entire universe. I would love very much if they did, I'm just trying to stick with what we actually know.

Also does anybody know how accurately star-systems are going to be represented? Right now it appears they have a star and a big cluster of stuff with varying distances in one central area. Asteroid fields aren't so much part of belts as they are just big clouds of rock. It all seems very cartoonish. Not that it'll ruin the fun, it just seems like they've taken a very relaxed representation in terms of realism.

I know they mentioned in a video that they were going for more of a sci-fi feel, but I hope they don't totally throw orbital mechanics and how natural structures form in space out the window.
i hope this game is actually fun and doesn't get boring after a week

Wanna learn my trick on how to make game releases more bearable?
[sp]Forget completely everything about said games.[/sp]
