to be fair rockstar has been doing open world modern cities much longer than ubisoft
Though not modern, the time between AC:1 and Watch Dogs is the roughly the same amount of time between GTA III and GTA IV. They've had plenty of time to get the likes of dynamic shadows down. Hell, I think some of the AC games did have dynamic shadows, so no clue why they're missing from Watch Dogs.
unfortunately it's a shallow driving factor, lovingly dubbed 'fridging', where a female character is barely (if at all) introduced and integrated in the story, existing solely to be killed off (or otherwise 'depowered') as a plot device for the main character to want to bring justice to a bad guy
One of the favorite parts of my television narrative studies course. Learning all these tropes was fun.
is ubisoft going for the mat_fullbright 1 look? even gta iv which has no ambient occlusion has a better sense of depth
is ubisoft going for the mat_fullbright 1 look? even gta iv which has no ambient occlusion has a better sense of depth
well they kind of mess around with fake textured "ambient occlusion" for character's feet and bottom of cars
case in point also watch dogs has dynamic lighting http://i.imgur.com/g7aBJR8.jpg
honestly i get that this is a joke but it's still sorta creepy as hell [editline]26th May 2014[/editline] even if the person made it ironically they deliberately spent the time in the game to find minorities and a canadian for the purpose of shooting them

Lighten up, wow.
He's not even playing watch dogs maxed out though, i'm pretty sure actually. [editline].[/editline] Have some pictures of max settings (though shitty fps (15-30) because ubisoft games suck performance wise) [t]http://u.rtag.me/s/xg7QwB50.jpg[/t] [t]http://u.rtag.me/s/VlMPybDD.jpg[/t] [t]http://u.rtag.me/s/km9sWxIo.jpg[/t]
If anything those night pictures with all the lights prove that the dynamic shadows aren't there at all.
For a funny video. Lighten up, wow.
it's not even funny though [editline]26th May 2014[/editline] im genuinely curious what makes it funny i'm not saying it's demon spawn but it was just a dude walking around shooting people
it's not even funny though [editline]26th May 2014[/editline] im genuinely curious what makes it funny i'm not saying it's demon spawn but it was just a dude walking around shooting people
the "oh no you didnt" factor. God, welcome to the Internet? Don't know what else to say.

It's roughly 5 hours until midnight here and the game doesnt come out until noon tomorrow :suicide:
If anything those night pictures with all the lights prove that the dynamic shadows aren't there at all.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/OFYgojf.png[/t] looks like there is to me also from experience, in the general haze of street lighting at night you rarely see much shadow under a single person walking about on the sidewalk. It's like an overcast day, vague fuzzy darkness surrounding feet is about as much as you'll get, so I'd let the one shot from the set slide a bit.
simultaneous delivery-system-based release is fairer for digital content if you ask me, people would just abuse their system clocks if it was based around local midnight
couldnt they just pull it off the isp time? there's probably a whole jumble of technical problems behind that but eh it doesnt matter too much i wont be able to play it until noon tomorrow anyway
hey yo anyone got a video of that train turn thing?
It would seem the driving and physics are similiar to games like "Sleeping Dogs". I think there is no competition with Rockstars' games when it comes to simulating an open world environment, especially with their religious attention to detail and the euphoria physics engine with realistic vehicle physics and handling (especially in IV as the handling is more arcade like in V). The game does look pretty awful considering it's on a next gen console, especeially if you keep in mind that GTA IV, the game it's been compared to, came out in 2008.
simultaneous delivery-system-based release is fairer for digital content if you ask me, people would just abuse their system clocks if it was based around local midnight
well considering that steam knows well enough to "conveniently" offer me a crippled russian language-only version of watch dogs, it may not have issues with system clocks. [editline]27th May 2014[/editline] and by the way because of that shit i have no idea how i'm supposed to buy this fucking game as i want to play it in fucking english as it is supposed to be
I think source engine is one of the few engines that can properly mirror everything in the world.
It can only do a few at a time. The renderer cannot natively do many reflections simultaneously, and also of any decent quality. Which is why sources makes use of many shitty cubemap reflections
I thought source's mirroring was just a clever camera system, which is what portal used to trick the viewer into seeing a continuous scene

Guess I'm not very attentive but it seemed like the NPC's had literally 0 shadow at all. I'm more concerned with whether or not the game is good since I'll probably be running it at low anyways.
It's a good game. Its just that it could be more than that.
I'm fairly certain Rockstar are the only current developer with access to the Euphoria engine (LucasArts licensed it for two games before they folded), so of course Watch Dogs isn't going to have it.

[editline]26th May 2014[/editline] at least I think that's Euphoria, a dev mentioned it at some point iirc
This game has a classic case of 'Molyneux Syndrome.' I mean literally everyone and their moms were talking about this game before it came out. Now its out and it's just another game in the world. Kind of a shame really, was looking for a new sandbox game that I could really get into.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/OFYgojf.png[/t]
The way the shadows come in awkward tilted angles and cut off at some points makes it look really cluttered and glitchy.
The way the shadows come in awkward tilted angles and cut off at some points makes it look really cluttered and glitchy.
they look like shadows that would be produced at a weird angle.
It can only do a few at a time. The renderer cannot natively do many reflections simultaneously, and also of any decent quality. Which is why sources makes use of many shitty cubemap reflections
Aren't reflections of those sorts in Source maps usually target-to-render or something akin to that? Where it's basically a texture being fed from a camera point, usually for screens or reflections?
The way the shadows come in awkward tilted angles and cut off at some points makes it look really cluttered and glitchy.
it's because there's a streetlight at a harsh angle just above that??
it's because there's a streetlight at a harsh angle just above that??
Fair enough. I just tend to associate that kind of shadow with shadows in Source glitching out but if that's the case, than I made a dumb assumption :v:
