you're really trying hard to twist this into a way to hate a woman
Yeah.... No.
That's not going to fly bucko.
Get out of here with that accusation right now.
Make sure you destroy sexist women's magazines and fashion shows while you're at it then.
ok stop deflecting the argument just because i may agree with critique of the video game industry doesn't mean i disagree with critique of women's magazines and fashion shows that often employ sexist tactics.
you're really trying hard to twist this into a way to hate a woman
What the fuck?
holyyyy crap
you realize that the game could choose to have a longer backstory right, that point in the video makes absolutely no sense at all
backstory in video games doesnt have a strict 7 second requirement, someone made it that way
Oh , you think that arcade games now had gigabytes of space for all those lovely cutscenes and voice acting?
They had 7 seconds because that's all they could muster.
How would you use 7 whole seconds to set the back story?
do something about as lazy as the damsel in distress trope?
maybe show people smashing the city and stuff? there are probably a million ways to do it in your arbitrary 7 second rule without actually employing the damsel in distress trope.
Also, I am tired of the excuse that games have internalized misogyny because that is what the market demands. That does not make it right. We have to change the market.
As for the second video, it is only a bit better than the first one, but not by much.
"To serve.... A market...."
Ok this argument really irks me.
Everyone is always criticizing decisions made by developers to appease a market, such as DLC, streamlining of game mechanics, etc. But when when it comes to the portrayal of women, serving the market is suddenly okay.
That's a double standard if I've ever seen one.
It's written like that because it gives the player an easy goal to achieve while only spending around 10 seconds or less of exposition, and it's also a plot point everyone can understand.
No developer is going "YES! Let's make the WOMAN in our game WEAK and HELPLESS! MUWAHAHAHAHAHA!"
no one said they were, i dont get where you're going with this

An arcade game (which Double Dragon is) back then would often throw in a small little cut scene to tell the player what they're doing and why.
No person wants to pop in a few quarters and sit for fifteen minutes while a long story is given to them.
The opening cut scene of that game was made to say "Hey guys, this is what you're fighting for, go kick some ass!" and it had to do it in a VERY short amount of time.
It wouldn't surprise me if this thread hit the 1000 post limit again.
but it doesn't?
In the thesis, she criticizes physically powerful female characters, claiming that they are trying to take after "positive male traits" rather than "positive female traits," and therefore, removing power from women.
However, in the Tropes vs. Women video, she praises Krystal's character for the exact same thing.
Seems contradictory to me.

That's what happens with circular logic.

i dont think you understand programming or game dev at all or maybe just anything about computers

they usually had demos that played that showed a story when noone was playing, actually

One of these is a newcomer and strips my wallet of cash. The other is a non existent fantasy of wannabe victims.
The demos often times showed gameplay actually.

words mean different things based on the context used, already explained this once
I'd love for Shadez and yawmen to develop a fun beat 'em up game as long as double dragon, and with as many art assets, with a story longer than 7 seconds. Also the space requirement is the same as a NES cartridge - around 4 Mb.
Posting this again because I know people will overlook it.

So, really, someone tell me why is appeasing to the market okay when it comes to portrayal of women when the even the phrase "we want to appeal to a larger audience" is capable of causing major uproar in the gaming community?

non existent? have you been playing games with your eyes covered? women have a terrible representation in games, it's pretty god damn existent

yeah because you have to be a qualified game developer to have a proper opinion on games
yeah because you have to be a qualified game developer to have a proper opinion on games
You shouldn't talk about development of games unless you know how to develop games.

Because it's serving the market vs Trying to screw over the market
shitstorm incoming
That's exactly what I thought when I saw this thread title. And as Dlaor-guy pointed out I wouldn't be surprised if this thread quickly reaches the 1000 post limit again.
No.
Those showed off game play more often than not.
If you were to put a short intro cuscene in your game like Double Dragon did, it was considered slightly impressive and somewhat innovative.
Little things like that would make people want to play.
I feel like you're failing to understand why video game are like the way they're like. As explained in the video (which from what I gather you did not watch, so please show some common courtesy and watch it), games are made to make a profit, not cater to a certain market. Every choice made in games is not to cater to the "MALE PATRIARCHY" but rather to a general consumer so the company making or publishing said games can make money.
yeah because you have to be a qualified game developer to have a proper opinion on games
No but you have to realize why that story exists.
1) It doesn't take up much space on the cartridge, leaving space for the actual fucking game.
2) It is so simplistic anyone can understand it.
3) It takes 7 fucking seconds to establish the entire fucking plot and move the game forward.
Do you guys really sit through classic Disney "damsel in distress" movies with your titties in a twist the entire fucking time? Believe it or not sometimes there is no ulterior motive to stupidly basic plots besides "they're really simple and stupid"
yeah because you have to be a qualified game developer to have a proper opinion on games
No but it helps to understand how games are developed and why things are why they are.
Even if you only had 7 seconds to make a story, you could come up with thousands of non Damsel in Distress types of stories.

not even 1 million sales

29 million sales

cool literally no one said they were trying to do anything else
Also why focus on just the subject of women in games? How about gender roles in games? I'd probably be willing to listen to her more if she focused on that (and also had some real eyebrows). I mean just as a for instance she picks on Mario and Peach as being the epitome of this "damsel in distress" stuff but in Luigi's Mansion you have Mario's weak and cowardly brother going to save the him, ultimate misogynist!

why the fuck are you arguing then?
