3rd person action games are total dump without a controller
ever wonder why they never come to PC? M+KB it total ass for hack and slashes and shit like that.
Fighting Games are also awful without a fightpad or a controller.
Platforming games in general, being 3D or 2D, are so much better with a controller.
Only games I can think of that are best on M+KB are shooters and RTSes, for the slight movements and the hotkey capacity.
oh and mmos too
It is indeed possible to use a mouse and keyboard but I believe it involves modding the controller, and that is most likely against the rules.
You could also get an adapter like the shown at this website: http://store.xim3.com/XIM-EDGE_p_12.html

DSFix and mouse fix.

I don't see Max Payne being any eaiser with a gamepad.
I expected one of those videos where you smash your controller on your PC until it breaks and then pausing and the camera shaking at the broke bits on the floor
kinda disappointed
empuze is a pretty cool guys, I like his videos

man if you don't like having a full 360 degree movement range then that's fine by me but im sticking to being able to move in all directions not just 8

Thanks Pigeon
I wish there was an easy way to get my PS3 controller to work

You can use that software for your PS3 controller from what I gathered.

Can someone test this for me I've got shit to do for the next couple of days and won't be able to.
most games that are worth while playing with a controller over KB+M already have native controller support
DS3 Tool + Bluetooth USB Dongle + PS3-controller = fantastic. DS3 tool can fool Windows into thinking it's an Xbox360 controller so it just works with everything that has a native support for it. Dark Souls and Castle Crashers for example.

I think I can live without slight extra movement.

This might interest some people, it's a way of adapting the Xbox 360 RF unit to connect wireless controllers to a PC.

I started this a few weeks ago (using an RF unit from a broken 360), found some old diodes from a PSU is disassembled/disoldered. Still need to get an old USB cable to test it out though.
While this thread is up, does anybody know if you can get one of those wireless controller adapters apart from having to buy another controller with it? I've got enough 360 controllers as it is, and I don't feel like hacking Mattz solution together out of my old 360.
yep you can buy a cheap knockoff of the wireless reciever for windows online, I own one and it works fine

something like this, less than 1/4 of the price of the official one

Oh, cool. I probably won't end up with the same model as you, but what's your range like?
I don't see Max Payne being any eaiser with a gamepad.
Exceptions obviously

Haven't really tested the limits but I can play from across my living room just fine. no idea of the exact range but it seems to work just as well as my actual 360

That's one thing I've always liked using a controller - having more fine control over both the angle and speed of your movement. On a pc you typically have 1 to 3 speeds of movement which require slightly awkward button combinations (holding control or shift while moving), whereas on a controller you can move in any direction and at quite a variety of speeds. I don't know about the PS3 controller but the Xbox 360 controller provides an interface that offers 16 bits of range per joystick direction, ie the left joystick's y data goes from -32768 to 32767.
Some games are better played with a controller than a mouse and keyboard. Because they're usually designed around one of the two. A general rule of thumb is that PC ports are better played with a controller.

THis is really nice in third person games, especially in ones where the world feels a lot more 'analogue' and dynamic, e.g. walking around in GTAIV is great with a gamepad. ANything involving shooting or fine control though is way better with a mouse.
There's probably a gaming peripheral out there somewhere which replaces WASD with an analogue stick so you get the best of both worlds though.

Yes, I like to play casual games with a controller.

Just an update on this if anyone is interested; Got the USB cable connected to the board, plugged the board back into the broken 360 to sync the controller, powered everything off and connected the RF module to my laptop and turned the controller back one.
Works like a dream, since it uses the official drivers it is handled just like an official wired controller/official wireless receiver. Even works with my guitar hero controller to let me play phase shift properly.
