Yeah, there's still a vertical dropshadow. Depth perception still cost me a number of lives, though; you make a jump for an area that seems like you should be able to land on it from your angle, only for you to realize your shadow's not there as you fall right past it to your death.
oh god this level
it was really awkward to even try this with anyone else besides toad on top of the hardness of the level
I've only made it through the level itemless with Toad, Ninty did not pull the stops on this one
and the sad part is someone probably had to play this level in QA over and over to make sure there were no glitches in it, RIP that man
What the fuck was with the side pillars and big guys at 5:28 and various other times on the video in that part?
Player can run straight through them but jumping?
Nope, they suddenly have individual hitboxes and you can fall through the gaps!

I think while running the player's "stride" as they run is long enough to compensate for the gaps in between the blocks.

Funnily enough, they're a callback to the original Super Mario Bros. It had platforms exactly like these, one "block" wide, spaced one "block" apart, and easy to cross without jumping if running full-speed. Also, just like in this, Nintendo liked to pepper later levels with both these platforms and fucktons of enemies hanging out on them.
It's kind of a shitty gimmick if overused, but it's not a new one by any stretch.
