It's hard to find advice about tailgating that doesn't involve switching lanes if available and slightly slowing down as a backup. I wonder what all the expert drivers in this thread who disagree with this advise do on single lane roads.
Goddamn no wonder most americans are shit drivers if that's the kinda stuff you're taught
There is a graceful way to exit a discussion when the reality of being wrong sets in. Making sweeping generalizations about an entire country isn't it.
No. If someone is driving on my ass I'm going to slow to a speed that will allow them to stop without hitting me should I need to brake for an emergency. I'm not going to jeopardize my ability to stop safely by speeding up or put myself at risk of being rear-ended by not slowing down just because Mr. Mini Dick has to pick up his Viagra
Where the fuck are you people getting the idea that you need to speed up. You need to SLOW DOWN if you can't change lanes so that you have more space between you and the vehicle infront of you to accommodate someone tailgating you. You don't slow down if there's no one infront of you because then you're just being an idiot. No one is telling you to speed up, what people are saying is get the fuck out of the passing lane if you aren't passing or turning within a reasonable distance. You could be going 100 in an 80 zone in the left lane, if someone behind you wants to pass, it doesn't matter if you're already going 20 over the limit. Let them pass. The only reasons you should ever be in the left lane, once again, are if you are passing somebody in the right lane at a reasonable speed, or you are turning left within a reasonable distance. It doesn't matter if the law in certain areas says it's legal to pass in the right lane as well, in most nations it's common courtesy to stick in the right lane unless you're doing one of the two things stated above. The woman in the video says she couldn't change lanes because of trucks, and didn't want to speed up because it was wet (it looked slightly damp in the video but we'll just say it was dangerous conditions). She also states he's been tailgating for 3 minutes before she started filming. Judging by the amount of traffic i could see in the video in the mere minute or two that she was recording, there was ample opportunity for her to get out of the left lane and let the guy pass. I'm 100% sure in the 4-5 miles that he was tailgating her, she could have moved over. If it required her to slow down and squeeze in between some other vehicles in the right lane, so be it. That's common courtesy. Instead, she purposely aggravates an already upset person and contributes to the cause of an accident. The guy tailgating is an asshole. The person not letting him pass is an asshole as well
Wow, that ending had me in hysterics :v: Yes, it was unsafe as all hell on both parties, but it was literally instant karma.
Do not change lanes unless you can get a sufficient amount of distance between you and the person behind you, because they will speed past and risk clipping your vehicle, an act which is easily fatal at high speeds.
I see this happen so much. People don't change lines in a predictable rate mostly and then that person floors it due to rage and then clips em and both of em crash. I've seen it 4-5 times here in south east florida.
He deserved it. The best thing to do, for fun, is to play islamic nasheeds really loudly out of the stereo as you pass by the person. they freak out and leave.
I thought the girl seemed like a bitch tbh. Guy was a dick, too, though.
Well the guy had plenty of room and time to pass so that's a poor argument. Also, when he DID pass he slowed down and sped up repeatedly to flip her off and give her shit. Also, there were frequent left hand turns on that road, so there really isn't a "fast" lane since you could turn off in both directions. On an interstate with all exit ramps on the right sure that would be a fair argument, but the circumstances of this video show that she was violating no laws, and the guy was being a stupid fucker and got what he had coming for a long time. I also think it's justified she pulled over to get out and laugh at him, hopefully she stopped filming to call the cops though to get that fuck off the road.
He had time to pass on the right, you're not supposed to pass on the right. Travelling in the passing lane is illegal in every state I've been in, including the state this was filmed in.
i think you're all making up shit about "passing lanes" and such, it was never in my drivers manual, it was never in my drivers test, my parents have never mentioned it, and until I started going to /o/ and saw people whining about it, i didn't even know it was a thing.
Goddamn no wonder most americans are shit drivers if that's the kinda stuff you're taught
Yeah, what do you guys know? How to stop a moose tailgating your zamboni?

Both lanes are acceptable. Meanwhile passing on the right is legal in Florida.

They are just another lane. It is entirely possible for him to be in a state that doesn't observe them. Generally states will have a sign near their entrance notifying you of the rules regarding the left lane. They also have rules regarding how you have to handle a few other things, like emergency vehicles on the side of the road. In the video it isn't a passing lane, as there are exits on either side. She was free to travel at a speed she felt was safe in either lane. Meanwhile tailgating is always illegal, regardless of state, as it is reckless driving.
yeah i dunno about manuals and all, i know that in some areas, the left lane (which is the colloquialism here) is for passing only, and occasionally i'll see a sign marking that, but in new york state, the left lane is probably the most occupied lane on any highway. on the big interstates like 287, you have more people sticking to the middle two or three lanes, but on 9 and 9A, the Taconic, the Sprain, (aka my daily commute) the left lane is frequently just another driving lane. plenty of people drive 10 and more over the limit too, and they'll pass you whatever way they can, but i've never seen somebody only use the left lane for passing. i think that's somewhat unheard of here.
Florida is infamous for its clueless and recless drivers. I belive I almost got hit about seven times on my bike.
I don't understand why everyone is complaining about passing lanes and highways. This wasn't on a highway, she was about to turn left in half a mile, I don't see why people think she's in the wrong.

they are both at fault here for living in florida

Yeah it's illegal, but it's better than tailgating and keeps traffic flowing at a good pace, which is infinitely safer

She states he was tailgating for 3 minutes BEFORE she started recording, and then another minute and a half of her recording still being tailgated. She was sitting in the left lane, not turning left, for over 4 minutes. You don't need to sit in the left lane if you're turning left 6 miles down the road. It's common courtesy regardless of what your laws in your specific state are to use the left lane as a passing lane, and the right lane as a travelling lane. I'm sure all of you (except Tmaxx, apparently) know about the passing lane / travelling lane concept. A majority of the states in the US even hand out fines if you're misusing the lanes, I.E. sitting in a passing lane without actually doing any passing or turning off the road within a reasonable distance.
I live in NC and i've never seen a sign like that, though while driving through most of the east coast (sc, ga, fl, and down) i haven't seen a sign like that either. seems kind of silly to me to have a whole lane just for "passing"
Driving in downtown new york or some shit, leaving the left lane for passing makes no sense. It's obviously situational, if there's heavy traffic and you won't have an opportunity to change into the left lane if you need to turn left up the road then it's fine to go into the left lane if you're not passing or turning immediately since traffic is clogged up anyways. In a situation like in the video however, there's clearly ample opportunity for the person recording the video to move out of the way. I road trip from B.C. into Alberta several times in a year, driving constantly on highways and major roadways in and out of big cities. If someone is in the left lane passing cars in the right lane and I'm behind them wanting to go faster, what do they do? When they have a chance, they move into the right lane, let me pass, and then change back into the left lane so they can continue passing. It's common courtesy, not to mention it's much safer if you're going slower than the flow of certain traffic to allow them to pass. Creating a bottleneck because you don't agree with the norm of having a passing lane is idiotic and dangerous
So you should break the law to accommodate assholes. Great advice. .
Erm. Where did I say to do anything illegal? I guess in your world maintaining speed and moving over is illegal, great advice. Direct from the driver's handbook: "What should you do when being tailgated?" "Move to the right lane and let vehicle pass, if possible." No matter which state's DMV website I visit, they all say the same thing: "Check your speed - If you are going too slow for the driving lane you are in, pull the vehicle to the right lane, or decide to increase your speed to the legal speed limit. Let them pass you - Most tailgaters want to get ahead of you." She had plenty of room to get over. She should have just gotten over and let him pass instead of provoking him and trying to film the situation. The second he came up behind her, she could have gotten over and the whole situation could have been avoided. Everyone involved in this video made poor choices, particularly the truck driver.
but mah driving freeedoms
Seriously, so annoying. The majority of people in this thread are why traffic coordination is so fucked up. As someone who is majoring in traffic engineering, this is beyond frustrating.

It's a really simple thing to do, and only people who are self-righteous refuse to do it. So many accidents and conflicts could be avoided if people would just move over and let the asshole pass.
Why is this so hard for people to understand?
because it's like saying "he only had a knife why did the cops shoot him instead of just using tasers?" road conditions aren't always going to allow for that, reactions to videos like this are pretty much always cases of 20/20 hindsight from people who weren't even there, etc.
because it's like saying "he only had a knife why did the cops shoot him instead of just using tasers?" road conditions aren't always going to allow for that, reactions to videos like this are pretty much always cases of 20/20 hindsight, etc.
...what? that's nothing like moving over to allow someone to pass. those are two completely different situations that have nothing similar whatsoever I honestly am not sure how you could draw a comparison like that ahaha [editline]28th March 2014[/editline]
the left lane isn't just automatically a "passing lane", especially if it has places to make left turns onto different streets like in the video. passing lanes are more specific than that.
I'm not sure how many times i've had to state this but i'll state it again common. courtesy. If you are NOT turning left within a reasonable distance, and are NOT passing somebody in the right lane at reasonable speeds and someone behind you wants to get around you, you let them. As ultralast stated, even the driver handbooks (including mine in B.C.) tell you to move over to the right lane if someone behind you wants to pass You don't have to hold the door open for somebody who is walking in right behind you, but it's common fucking courtesy to do so. You don't HAVE to move over if there are exits on both ends and you're not on a highway, but it's common courtesy to do so ESPECIALLY if you aren't turning or immediately passing someone at that moment in time. Why is that such a hard concept for you people to understand? Not doing so can cause situations like the one in this video, instead of moving over within the 4 and a half+ minutes that she could have and avoiding the entire situation, she whips out her phone and starts recording making stupid claims as to why she couldn't change lanes like "i was turning soon" or "it was wet". She didn't change lanes because she was being an asshole, which is why she whipped her phone out to record the other asshole in the truck If you hog the left lane while someone behind you clearly wants to pass because you're turning left in 5 minutes, you're an asshole. Just like if you don't hold the door for somebody who is directly behind you clearly going through the same doorway, you're an asshole
common. courtesy.
it's also common courtesy not to ride people's ass, knowingly trying to scare them out of your way by getting dangerously close to their bumper. common courtesy is tied to the golden rule: "treat others the way you would like to be treated" would you want to hold the door open for someone who's shouting at you "Get the fuck out of my way! I want to go in first, fuck you!" you also seem to be ignoring the part where the guy spun out of control and nearly caused a major accident because diverting his attention from the road to make rude gestures at someone was more important to him than driving safely. or are you really just defending a reckless maniac driver because you hate slow drivers that much? i dislike getting stuck behind some asshole as much as anybody, but if you're going to respond by trying to rocket past them on a wet road while not even looking ahead then maybe you ought to take some anger management courses before you go piloting 2 tons of high-speed metal.
