This hot rebar doesn't really have a lot of killing potential though. At least compared to a regular bolt. While a smoldering steel rod sounds and probably is very painful, it's not very deadly. It instantly cauterizes the wound. Unless it hits you in the chest or head and kills you directly, you'll probably survive. A regular bolt or arrow would've been hard to remove and you'd have the risk of bleeding to death. A wound created by this hot rebar is cauterized, stopping any bleeding. The 2nd and 3rd degree burns increase the risk of infection, but a normal arrow wound is already very likely to get infected.
The only advantages this bolt has over regular bolts is the chance to start fires, and the chance to cause a person to go into shock from pain/overstimulating nerves.
I did forget about it closing the wound up, though I suppose that should be obvious :v: but the heat is probably going to fuck up surrounding tissue way worse than a normal bolt
risk of infection aside a rebar sticking in your legs definitely way more damaging than any bolt, I'm sure. Especially when your insides are a grilled steak
Yeah, it's a big piece of metal, but does it really weigh up against a regular 500lb crossbow?

You're forgetting impact forces. A piece of rebar hitting you at crossbow speeds, more in line with the game than the video, would shatter basically everything.
At concrete and armor skewering speeds like in the game would the rebar even hold up to being shot?
that much force could possibly bend it just enough to totally screw the shot up. It definitely wouldn't break, but if it bends that might not be a happy ending

at that point you're probably better off using a glass shotgun
That shot at 20:34 went pretty awry. God that looks dangerous, imagine a piece bending to break and the fragment bouncing back toward them
I don't understand what you mean it wouldn't have broken being in the soft state that its in.
It's awesome but I wish it warmed the bolt at the tip so the hot part was at the front and not the middle.

I suppose given more time and thought the whole bolt heating mechanism could be improved quite a bit anyway. Heating the entire bolt for one, but perhaps adding a small temperature sensing circuit to break one of the terminals when the bolt is hot, but not too hot, so the circuit can be left running rather than giving you what is essentially a timer to fire the thing.
I'm guessing why the crossbow in HL2 was used is because Combine soldiers basically have flak armor grafted onto them and implants to suppress pain. The red hot bolt probably has some properties that allow it to just completely incapacitate a combine soldier instantly compared to a normal bolt.

As I explained a few posts above, if the Combine soldiers can suppress pain, this bolt would be worse than a regular one.
it was probably used because it's unique, looks interesting, and is very cool and satisfying to use
visual design and function come before logic for most of the weaponry, remember. the standard handgun has a sporting muzzle brake on it because it just looks cool and futuristic, somehow the SPAS-12 can simultaneously fire from its ammunition tube, and the MP7 can launch grenades from nowhere out of a barrel that's the same size as its primary.

It's actualy a weight to counter balance recoil, but I guess because its single hand wielded, the recoil is still very much there.
As for the SPAS... I like to think that its a REALLY fast burst fire mode instead of going "oh its both tubes".
I got nothing on the grenade though... No wait, you have two options: its a small grenade that becomes bigger when fired from somewhere in the weapon, or Gordon actually throws it with his hand, and makes the "thump" sound himself.

Prettymuch this. I was always under the impression that the rebar got red hot from magnetic induction and that the point of the crossbow was just that it was strung together parts by a genius to launch readily available sharp pieces of metal at very high speeds. The heating of the metal was an unintended but possibly useful side effect due to the makeshift nature of how they were held and propelled. Rule of cool with a little plausible science basically.
