They're scaring him into thinking that he needs the gang to be safe or complete or something. People usually join gangs because they don't feel safe or they just like the promise of power. There might not be an individual who is forcing him to join, but they are definitely persuading him to, indirectly or not. That being said I don't condone gang violence at all and I think everything about it is really sad for everyone. Violent behavior is almost always started from fear so really in the end everyone is suffering. It's just a shitty circle. Also if you remember the part about his family cheering him on, even his family are promoting his violent behavior. At that point, he was pretty much raised to be put into this situation.

But this is 3-4 birdshot shells, one of which went straight into his chest and lungs. That's just insane how he survived.
