She was stopped, and trust me, if I could've gone any slower while still making forward progress, I would've been. I tried braking/steering away at least 150 feet at around 5 MPH, but nothing helped.
Did you try engine braking?
or maybe i was saying there was time at the light to stop?
The only people who had to stop were the van and apparently you with how you're behaving.
T-boning is a bit of a case-by-case here, but in VA, it is explicitly written in a statute that any and all rear-end collisions are the driver who collided into the back of the driver ahead with only one exception: if they're in reverse gear.
Did you try engine braking?
If your tires have absolutely no grip whatsoever, to the extent that not even steering can prevent you from bumping into somebody, then no sort of braking short of a turbo-jet positioned so that it provides thrust in reverse is going to do anything.
That and unless I missed something in the manufacturer's literature, 1986 Bronco IIs don't have engine brakes.
The funny thing is I halfway wonder if she even called the cops because she was hoping to get some big insurance check or something, because when the cop showed up and asked if there was any damage to the vehicles as a result of this collision, she immediately starts trying to yank one of the passenger doors open and says "Oop, look, dammit, this door got messed up!".
Thankfully her daughter was in the van with her, because she immediately said "No no no, mom, it's always been like that."

Engine braking is just shifting into a lower gear so that the engine actually slows the vehicle. It works well on ice and other low-traction surfaces.
Car accidents bring out the worst in people
Damn, that van was flying. Even if she was trying to time the green light and not have to stop, she went into the intersection waaaaay early. Definitely not paying attention.
IMO the only thing he really could have done differently is speed up more and get through the intersection quicker...and get hit in the passenger's door for his trouble.
Minivan driver is a shit driver and deserves full responsibility. Maybe he lingered a little longer on the yellow than he should, but she clearly blew a red light at full speed. Idiot.
Never ever trust a Japanese minivan on the road. You can say whatever you want about irresponsible civ drivers, audi drivers etc. but hands down Japanese minivans are the most likely to get you into an accident. Especially Toyota siennas. Every time I've been close to an accident it's been because of one of those damn things.
One of the dumbest things I know of is generalizing a driver by the vehicle.

The point is that on ice, if your tires can't get traction to steer or brake, having them spinning less isn't going to change much, if anything.
Holy shit so many people don't know about the "point of no return" as the light turns yellow. Reading these arguments is painful.
Go back to the classroom portion of your driving class. http://drivinginstructorblog.com/q-how-can-i-tell-when-im-at-the-point-of-no-return/
Sucks for the guy. Hope he bleeds that bitch dry and gets his car fixed.

hummers are an exception
I got pulled over a lot in Alabama but since I've been living in Georgia I have not been pulled over once.
Also yeah. I was under the impression that the law anywhere is that if all four of your tires are across the white line before the light turns red you're good.
i'm pretty sure the law (alteast where I am) is that if the front of your car has entered the intersection by the time it goes red you're good.
there's a 3-4 second delay between one set going red and another going green anyway.

especially considering your average joe buys a are primarily on cost and use. She probably bought that minivan because A; it was cheap and B: she needed a minivan.

With a temper like that you really shouldn't be driving either :v:
Lucky the guy was filming because apparently the cops were writing him a ticket after taking the lady's word that he ran a red light. He showed them the footage and instead the cops wrote tickets for the woman.
Pretty sad that the cops choose to the take word of the woman who had no proof to back up her claims (sexism double-standard at it's finest). There are witnesses, why didn't they ask around? Good thing he had his dashcam to prevent a false claim from happening.
How is his hand okay after it was ON the wheel when the airbag came out.
scary shit
im terrified of air bags

Can probably assume he was applying pressure with his hand, since it looked like it slid off as the airbag went off. Air bags aren't all that scary. At least if you don't think about there basically being an explosive in your car.

It's not a sexism double standard, most T-bone accidents are a result of someone running a red light. Police do have to make educated guesses sometimes, so without the video evidence it would otherwise absolutely look like he ran the red light.
Really, people pointing out that you should instantly stop when the light turns yellow obviously have never driven a car.
The whole point and sole purpose of the yellow light is to serve as a warning that at any second now its going to turn red which means you need to stop and the other lights on the other sides are turning green (this happens after your light turns red, not while its yellow).
And if the light turned red at the moment he came crossed the light then you still need to assume that not everyone has a Porsche 911 Turbo with a launch control that makes you go from 0 to 60 in a few seconds. Cars need to throttle up y'know and even then the car would go so slow that you could easily stop.
End of discussion i hope.
1. It would have to be a pretty hard stop.
2. The lady didn't even slow down at the red light. She clearly ran it.
It was also still yellow while he was in the intersection. You can see it between the mirror and top.
It's also perfectly fine to go through an intersection on yellow if you feel like you can't stop in time. Slamming the brakes and screeching off a month's worth of tire wear doesn't count. There's also considering the fact that there could be some idiot behind you not prepared for you to slam your brakes because as with most people, they're in a world of their own when they're in their car
hummers are an exception
Lifted trucks (outside of the country) are another.
If you look in the middle of the road, the white lines turned solid instead of dashed.
Beside it meaning not to switch lanes, they're usually the length at which you can go through the light at the speed limit and make it across before it changes red.
(also like someone said earlier, you can see the light above his mirror and it's still yellow when the minivan was going through, so no it's not his fault at all.)

Airbags can fuck you up but I thought the ones in this video were amazing. They inflate to full size and completely absorb the energy coming from his head in a fraction of a second.

Yeah what the dashcam doesn't show is the tailgater behind this guy who is texting on his phone and eating a Big Mac.

I thought all airbags did that?
If he had not ran the yellow he would have been spared the accident. Thats not victim blaming, thats called facts; Victim Precipitation.
You're a cop, and you should know the law. You are SUPPOSED to run yellow lights if you're unable to come to a complete stop safely and in time. This is true in EVERY state in the United States.
A large portion of my job is programming signal timing; most yellow time is 2-3 seconds, and then there is what is called a "Red Clearance" interval that varies from 1-2 seconds. Even AFTER his phase turns red, there are 1-2 seconds before the opposing phase turns green. This guy did nothing wrong.
I thought all airbags did that?
sometimes airbags dont deploy immediately in older cars, causing them to launch your head back doing more damage.
You're supposed to in Virginia, too. That being said, almost all lights that aren't more than twenty years old have an automatic three-second delay between rotations, and even without the delay, the lady in the video was not going a speed she would have been able to appropriately stop for a red light on, which she still clearly had the entire time until the collision.
Sidebar: the next time you're in an accident involving the front of your car being struck; TURN THE CAR OFF. I don't know how many engine fires I've seen start because the person caught a gas or oil line and it hit the iron and ignited. Plus, you're not supposed to move the vehicle at all until authorities arrive unless it's a minor fender-bender without injuries.
I usually see the opposite problem, where people will get in a minor fender bender and just sit there in the middle of traffic with their hazard lights on, waiting for the cops.

Airbags are fucking terrifying, even when they work properly the whole slightly-contained-explosive pointed at your face is kind of unnerving.
One of many reasons why I have a dash cam, can't really trust everybody else on the road.
Mmhm. This also shows why I look to either side of an intersection I'm approaching even if I have a green light. I'm on the lookout for idiots who run reds. I have avoided red light runners doing that before, and usually without even having to brake hard.
It's also why I don't go the instant the light turns. I look over and make sure those other cars are going to get stopped before I let my clutch find the flywheel. The impatient sods around me may not like having to wait another couple of seconds, but I honestly don't give a shit. I'm not getting T-boned for their impatience.

Not always. In my area, if your shit will still move you're supposed to get it out of the road lest it cause another crash. There's signs posted on the freeways saying to do this. It's designed to cut down on the people rear-ending the crashed cars because they're not paying attention, or they're rubber necking, or whatever.

They're also rather asinine. They didn't need to deploy in this crash, even if he had hit hard enough to need a bag there was nobody in the pass seat so under no circumstance should that bag have gone off.

I honestly don't think his head even hit the fuckin' thing. He didn't exactly hit very hard.

I've seen it too, obviously. But I didn't say what people actually do, I said what the law states. If you're in a major accident where the damage is possibly within the engine bay (air bags deploy) or if there are any injuries, in VA, you're to turn the vehicle off immediately and await police. If it's a minor fender bender and everyone involve is without injury, then you can move the vehicle and await police. Again, it's amazing how many people try to move their cars to get out of traffic after their front ends got smashed and then all of a sudden, they hit the throttle and flames shoot up.
I thought all airbags did that?
That's what I mean.
Bottom line is, if you make go through a light on any color other than red, you're totally fine and should not be to blame.
