Why the fuck are RPG full runs there, like games with that much downtime of just filler content are never great, especially glitchless
and for whatever reason jrpg's have a bad rep even in the general speedrunning community with some bonker critiques like, "how is it a speedrun if it takes 3+ hours?" or "how can you speedrun an rpg?"
Honestly the speedrun community can be kind of strange at times. IMO some of the more interesting runs can actually come from those longer games, but I think a lot of runners just look for games they can finish and reset extremely fast if they screw up. And it's hard for a marathon setting like this, when most of the games last 10-30 minutes max. Personally I'd to see more Skies of Arcadia / Legends, but there only seem to be a handful of runners for that one. At this point I believe the fastest run is nearly 15 hours :v: So that's kind of a tough one to sell.

There should be something inherently interesting about the process rather than merely playing it quickly.
Like, Paper Mario can be amazing to watch if you do a bunch of the glitches, but otherwise it's just "Let me just skip through cutscenes while I optimize this battle against this boss". They're fantastic games, but they eat up floor time like crazy. Case in point the FOUR FUCKING HOUR FF1 RUN that is coming. Are you kidding me?
any% glitchless jrpg run are the most boring runs ever imo, they're just like watching a commentated walkthrough and its not interesting at all especially in a marathon format.

Also, they completely fucked up a run earlier, where they just refused to tell the guy if his donation incentive was met. Multiple times
This Pokemon Emerald run reminds me of SGDQ when I thought a Final Fantasy 6 speedrun would be fun to watch. I should've learned.
the TTYD run this year is 3 and a half hours as opposed to being 6 hours previously. I never minded watching the whole thing because I love the game and it has tons of great moments. I wonder what they found to cut that in half though

I knew about the palace skip, but I thought it was only possible in a TAS. did they find a way to do it by hand?
I knew about the palace skip, but I thought it was only possible in a TAS. did they find a way to do it by hand?
I'm not sure if they've got it down consistently to 1st try, but yeah, multiple runners have been able to pull it off by hand and still finish their runs.
I don't think I'd mind the long, boring RPG runs if they were scheduled for low times of the marathon. Why not use Pokemon or Final Fantasy to fill the time when most viewers are sleeping? Like 2AM-6AM? I'm not nearly as down on this event as a lot of people seem to be, but there's certainly room for improvement. (Also, just do a TASbot SM64 ABC any% already. It's down to 1 A Button press, it's not too long (~2h), it has tons of ridiculous tech throughout, and the memes alone will draw in an audience.)
Man, they have an entire audience in there right now for Pokemon, and it just hurts so much. It's even glitchless so it can't even be amusing.
They refused to stop donations for an incentive. Then couldn't figure out which option won. Holy fuck
Its sad too, because glitched Pokemon runs are some of the most jaw-dropping amazing runs that ever grace AGDQ
It was a Mistake to get rid of the Mario Maker race. It was fun watching each team learning the course as they play it for the first time
It was a Mistake to get rid of the Mario Maker race. It was fun watching each team learning the course as they play it for the first time
It was like watching the crowd root for their favorite sports team
they're doing a Spyro relay race in the casual room atm, that be much better than a glitchless pokemon speedrun tbh
they're doing a Spyro relay race in the casual room atm, that be much better than a glitchless pokemon speedrun tbh
The main room probably looks like a geriatric center in comparison.
Pokemon is definitely in the league of most boring games to look at. The gameplay is so tedious and dumbed down. All the interactions in combat is just spamming the same basic attack for every pokemon. It's astrocious. I honestly can't see the appeal unless you like cutesy stuff, there's so many similar better alternatives in rpgs out there. Yet this is the preferred one? Maybe it's just lost on me because i didn't grow up with it.
These pokemon runs are boring as hell. Not even decent as background noise while doing other shit and I'm one of those loons who LIKE long as fuck runs for exactly that purpose.
ESA 2015 had the best setup. There were 2 streams: 1 for the more popular games, and another for lesser known runs. If you didn't like what was on the main stream, you could switch over to the secondary stream. It was great.
Maybe next year they will include a Phoenix Write game. Would be about as exciting to watch as pokemon.
PM and TTYD are fairly interesting to watch the first time because theyre really broken

But they really aren't speedrun material if you're insisting on doing it glitchless. Especially the older ones where due to the myriad of hacks needed to get games running on the hardware with minimal overhead, shit just breaks if you look at it funny.
Read about "cosmo" being blocked in the chat, remembered how Cosmo was invited to a Super Mario Maker championship - that was pretty cool, right?
I mean, I dunno if glitches were fixed in them, but how stable are the 3DS VC versions of the first generation?
I've not really touched the series properly since like gen 4, so I have no idea if they fixed the bugs or not in remakes. Though it's likely, the hardware in the DS shouldn't need many quick little memory saving hacks. Probably plenty of arbitrary code injection exploits just waiting to be found though!
