in like every single average concept artists portfolio ever??

yeah ok
now what was the last time you saw that in an aaa movie well integrated and properly rendered/animated?
To chime in on the CGI debate: Gollum would look so much better if it was a guy in a suit right?
Hobbit Gollum is one of the best cgi characters i've ever seen.

a lot of work went to make him (and the close-up scenes) not uncanny
trailer doesn't look like that, everything's too "fluidy" to look real
Even the beards are CGI

I'm cool with Smaug being a generic dragon, maybe because of the illustration I grew up on.
I mean, Lord of the Rings is the codifier for generic fantasy as the result of being eternally copied. It's the epitome of classic fantasy, the dragons can be as dragony as they want.

youre right
one character was done with cgi to make him look inhuman and strange
so lets make every scene, background, and character movement into cgi
in fact
forget actors
lets just make a cartoon

hey it worked for toy story
I think the problem with CGI is that when it's so easy to add whatever you can imagine, you kinda end up with something looking more busy and more unnatural (which depending on how you like your Hobbit is either bad or good) than what you'd get if it was quite hard to add.
Hell, just look at Titanic - easily one of the most impressive movies made, almost no CGI.
I was pretty surprised to see Legolas in there, I haven't seen Orlando Bloom in anything since the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie...What's he been up to since then, anyway?
The only thing I was upset about in the movie was that Bombur wasn't as prevalent in the film as he was in the book.
I mean, Hell, he was one of the main dwarves.

The design for Bofur, Bifur, and Bombur is great, though.

Del Toroe's Smaug is definitely cool looking, but I grew up with generic fiery-dragon Smaug.
I mean, I read the book when I was, like, nine or ten or something. I always imagined him as that.
CGI looked pretty shit in the first Hobbit, doesn't seem like it will be changing much in the second. The Thing in 1982 had better looking Things than the goblins in the Hobbit (and goblins are a whole lot simpler, not to mention the massive budget difference).
Also, the current Smaug is quite boring, but the thing that bothers me is the CGI.
also, smaug looks really bad lol. whatever happened to this?

I haven't read the books but this concept art seems a bit too dark compared to the tone of the first movie. On the other side I'm not exactly a fan of the current classic dragon look, too.
