Knocking enemies off ledges with the water push vigor was the best.
It was unexplainably hilarious.
thing about that is i never really had enough salts to do anything cool like that, could pull off maybe one combo with bronco + jockey, and then had to run around looking for salts on the ground or wait for elizabeth to give me them. honestly, i think the combat would have been way more radical like the way you're preaching if they kept the syringes and health packs from BS1/2. that way you wouldn't have to leave the combat zone or rush to cover to grab yourself some more supplies.
[editline]7th April 2013[/editline]
that's another big thing
near the end i WANTED to use different guns, but they were basically useless against the typical grunts because i hadn't upgraded them before
so like... 14/16 weapons were basically useless for me.
Naaaah man I totally disagree. Running low on salts just meant I either had to A) switch it up, or B) you better get your ass moving. It keeps you on your toes. If I had the ability to give myself health/salts whenever I wanted, I would just sit there mashing on the health or salts button, and that would take away a large amount of mobility to the game because you'd literally have no reason to move. I never really had a problem running completely out of salts though, but that might because I was using gear that had enemies drop salts 40% of the time or something like that.
The upgrade system though yeah, I wasn't the biggest fan of, but you totally could go through that entire game without ever upgrading a weapon and do just fine.
The fact that you can only keep two weapons on you at all times, the fact that they removed the different ammo types for different situations, the fact that you can no longer replenish your Mana/Health at any point in combat anymore, the removal of cosmetic additions to your weapons after you've upgraded them, which makes identification during a combat a pain, it's all a HUGE detriment to how fighting in the game goes.
Combat in Infinite is seriously the weakest part of the game, and coming off of games like its predecessors the removal or modification of these aspects weren't necessary. Just because the narrative of a game is a strong point, along with the visuals, doesn't mean that you should "dumb-down" or "streamline" something else.
Did you guys think the upgrade system really mattered that much? I constantly exchanged weapons for others instead of buying ammo and thought everything was perfectly viable (save for the burst gun, that thing felt weak). The new vigor abilities made the existing ones more fun to use, but all the other strategies still worked, so I saw no reason to ignore the rest of my arsenal.
If a weapon felt useless to me, it was only because because it didn't fit the situation (for example shotty for sniping).
I didn't like the two-weapons-only restriction at first, but then I really enjoyed it when it led to ammo scarcity and I had to stay mobile and grab new ones all the time. It also led to those little "Hell Yeah" moments where I was pinned down and almost out and then Elizabeth tossed me a loaded gun and I was instantly back in the game. Same goes for salts and health which I really started to miss until I got used to Elizabeth and realized just how much more intense it made firefights and how much it encouraged playing it fast and smart, hit'n'run. Not like in the old Bioshocks where you pretty much bruise or kite through everything unless it's a turret.
Wouldn't have been possible with the old loadout system.

well the Infinite is meant to be a completely different game so
another thing is you can't blame players for sticking to 1 or 2 weapons or vigors, because not everybody plays games the same way. like me, for instance. i couldn't use ANY of vox weapons or automatic weapons because they just felt awful to me. you can't blame a player like me for sticking to the weapons they love (pistols and shotguns) because they can't stand the other weapons.
well the Infinite is meant to be a completely different game so
does that automatically make it immune to any criticism? no, it doesn't.
the gunplay felt much more tight, but at what cost? no ammotypes, more ammo to come by, unsatisfying upgrade system, etc.

Then don't put Bioshock in the title.
How are you supposed to expect people NOT to compare it to its predecessors when the title contradicts that.
It reminds me of Devon Shatsky, the producer for Silent Hill Downpour, saying that people shouldn't compare Downpour to the previous games in the series.

No, it's not immune to criticism in any way, though then again all of this "no ammotypes, more ammo to come by, unsatisfying upgrade system, etc." didn't affect me because I hadn't played any Bioshock games before.
Different people have different complaints I suppose.

Said it again, I (unfortunately) haven't played any other Bioshock game but this one so I can't really relate with most of the complaints, but I guess it didn't fit their vision or something, the game did go through a lot of design changes so I suppose they scrapped and replaced a lot of past mechanics.
And the "gear" system is what replaces upgrades pretty much, it's probably a bad alternate, but that's what replaces it.
Edit
I should probably start on the first Bioshock eventually anyway.
As soon as I got the carbine/shock jockey the game became easy mode. And handymen were such a let down, they just flip around the level and knock the camera around so you can't do shit. Was expecting a new big daddy got robot spiderman.
Of course OP is going to get dumbs because
1. It's Totalbiscuit oh no he doesn't pander to people.
2. The review doesn't praise this game as game of the century.
3. It actually points out flaws.

i'm sick of games getting endless praise
it was fun and i feel like i got my money's worth, but fuck it's not a 10/10 game. there has been NO game worthy of 10/10, not ever and there never will be.

Played it at a friends house, the game was alright for as far as we got but not game of the century, not even really game of the year for me. It just lacks something I can't put my finger on. Same thing happened when Bioshock came out, everybody was calling it the next half-life 2 and best game of all years and shit, it wasn't really that special IMO, although I like Infinity a lot more.

Honestly I think one of the reasons that it's being so highly praised is due to the game had so much riding on it, when in reality while it did do something good, there was something lacking as was seen in some of the older gameplay.
The story, the characters, the graphical design and the narrative are all undoubtedly amazing, but there's no doubt the gameplay itself could have been improved.
I started the game on hard, by the time I got to the bit after where [sp]Elizabeth kills Fitzroy[/sp] and you have to fight the Vox Populi I got so pissed off with the game I turned the difficulty all the way down to easy. I just wanted to see the story end.
Hell before that point I literally groaned out loud the moment I saw a sign there was about to be a fight. The combat felt boring, unsatisfying and at times got really frustrating.
I felt really wrong playing through most of the game, knowing it got lots of praise, even adam sessler giving it a 5/5. I kept nitpicking at moderately noticeable things, but then sat back to think "maybe I'm just being critical because I was expecting an 11/10 game or something. Overall an enjoyable game and the ending was quite interesting, but I was still kind of unenthused about it on the whole because of the nonstop praise I'd been seeing

the combat felt for the most part like artificial difficulty- nothing new, nothing special, just enough health for people to take a few headshots to kill, not to mention the all-seeing AI that fires at you the instant you peek a pixel around a corner, from across an area

That's one of the main reasons I watch his content; most of the time he's unbiased and tells it how it is. That and he's a bit more mature than the average guy yelling "RAPERAPEIMGONNARAPE" into a mic; he's not the best but he's somewhat professional.
Also I like seeing multiple sides of the coin; not just either blind bashing or shaft-licking praise.
I loved the game, so far it's GOTY for me

We'll have to wait for "Fuck Shit Up". Story written by Tarantino and Nolan. Directed by Kojima and Howard. Blessed and developed by Gabe and Valve.

Have you ever played Banjo Kazooie, Oddworld Abe's Oddysee/Exoddus or Earthworm Jim
idk I used lots of different guns and vigors
i kind of suck at video games tho
admittedly I didn't even try bucking bronco or return to sender but i switched between the others pretty frequently
Have you ever played Banjo Kazooie, Oddworld Abe's Oddysee/Exoddus or Earthworm Jim
Are you implying those games deserve a 10/10?
Because they don't.
that's gonna be a loooooooooooooooong wait
But the weight will be worth it.

bleh, I hate that pretentious "always room for improvement" attitude. Yeah, no shit everything has flaws but if you automatically round down to a 9 you're basically saying minor flaws detract over an entire 5% of the total experience away.
and tbh you might as well just say "out of 9" then if that's the way you're going to treat it, and stop being all pretentious about an effectively meaningless and subjective numeric rating system.
10/10 doesn't actually have to mean perfect just near it
Have you ever played Banjo Kazooie
If you can actually explain to me how banjo kazooie is a 10/10 or even a 7/10 I will give you a goddamn medal.
Assigning a number score to a video game is stupid anyways.
Are you implying those games deserve a 10/10?

rating for nostalgia always has a bias
compared to other games I played back then I'd definitely say BK was crazy awesome
Assigning a number score to a video game is stupid anyways.
it's very hard to sum up all he pros and cons of something with a number
Have you ever played Banjo Kazooie, Oddworld Abe's Oddysee/Exoddus or Earthworm Jim
i'll never understand blind, rabid fanboys that insist their game deserves a PERFECT score despite the games having numerous flaws.
[editline]7th April 2013[/editline]
also i didn't like those games so therefore your belief that they're 10/10 is completely nullified by my crazy good opinion
