I also like how OP's video makes it seem like only this Patricia Hernandez girl is upset when in reality CBS News, The Atlantic, Fox News and several industry sites like Gizmodo and Destructoid have run the story negatively against Microsoft. In digging for these sources I also found this gem.
Update, June 11: Microsoft has provided the following statement, clarifying that the banter was not scripted. "Yesterday, during the Xbox E3 briefing, one of our employees made an off the cuff and inappropriate comment while demoing ‘Killer Instinct’ with another employee. This comment was offensive and we apologize," Phil Spencer, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Studios told The Atlantic Wire.
So people arguing that it was a good idea to say this are actually going against what Microsoft themselves have said and apologized for.
I was watching the Microsoft stream live and the second he said that I knew someone would bring it up because it was such an obviously stupid example of trashtalk when you are demoing a game to hundreds of thousands of people.
To be honest it made me a bit uncomfortable when I was watching it, but then again I stopped playing multiplayer games almost entirely because I was sick of guys doing trash talk worse than this. Should he be fired or whatever over this? No, of course not. Should he be careful about what he says on a Nationally broadcasted presentation? Yeah probably.
I don't think it was a rape joke but it still seemed really fucking weird and creepy :S
It was really odd and awkward and out of place, then again odd and awkward defined all of the talking in the entire conference.
-snip-
Regardless of whether it was intentionally a rape joke or not, some feminists need to pick their battles better. Kicking up a fuss about a brief comment at a games convention just reinforces damaging stereotypes about feminism by making them seem a bit petty to the casual observer.

Just look at r/mensrights and similar communities. Sure, it might seem a bit silly to some but not everyone reacts the same way. I didn't feel offended personally (though I did think it was really awkward and cringeworthy) but I understand how it could be taken as offensive by others.
It does matter, because you are literally thinking too much into it. Of course, it could be misinterpreted as a rape joke, and it might have possibly been risky to say, but that's only because you've already seen the outcome of this nonsensical controversy. You are getting way too worked up over a joke that has nothing to do with rape, and you're looking for a reason to be mad about it because you believe that it has everything to do with rape.
I'm not mad at the joke. I'm mad a microsoft for not thinking it would cause a problem.
legit feminists probably don't give a shit. it's the hipster feminism.
I'm not mad at the joke. I'm mad a microsoft for not thinking it would cause a problem.
Is it really surprising though? They're like completely out of touch with reality.
Am I the only one who sees "Just let it happen, it'll be over soon." as a way of saying "Just give up. Let me finish kicking your ass real quick."? [editline]13th June 2013[/editline] I think people are looking way too much into his words.
there's deep meaning in everything man~~~ just like the quotes about love on my facebook selfies
The Rome: Total War music is the icing on the cake.
Relevant: Why is this being turned into something about women? Since males are more common on online games (as demonstrated by how many women say "the server was surprised I was a girl") then wouldn't male rape survivors be the group at most risk of being exposed to the "rape culture"? Sounds like a double standard. As much as I dislike Hernandez, has she even commented on this? I cannot find any articles. All I found is Jonathan Blow blowing it out of proportion due to the fact it was a man saying it to a woman, nice way to completely disregard male rape survivors. Then he backtracked and said "People on Twitter need to stop going Defcon 1 about every tweet all the time" maybe the same could be said for shitty jokes at press conferences and then screaming about misogyny.
was...was that music from Rome Total War?
legit feminists probably don't give a shit. it's the hipster feminism.
you would know?
legit feminists probably don't give a shit. it's the hipster feminism.
what does this even mean
i fight for equality, you've probably never heard of it
legit feminists probably don't give a shit. it's the hipster feminism.
I've never heard of the phrase "Hipster Feminism" outside of you saying it in this thread. What does that even mean? They liked equality for women before it was cool?
it's cause i made it up. hipster style is like a amalgam of various other cultural trends and whatnot, but ham fisted, half baked and for the most part the actual message is lost on them. it's like a social fashion accessory.
I hate when people nitpick on peoples words, warp them into a meaning it wasn't from the start only to have a reason to start bitching.
for some people it isn't nitpicking, it's just what came to mind. subjectivity. people see things differently than you, what a thought.
i fight for equality, you've probably never heard of it
Just let it happen, it'll be over soon.
I'm surprised there's any actual discussion about this. I just can't fathom how this relates to rape in anyway. I mean "just let it happen, it'll all be over soon" can relate to a thousand different things. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the last thing my dentist told me before I had a tooth removed
You were orally raped...
It doesn't really matter though, if people want to shit on feminists they'll find a way regardless. Just look at r/mensrights and similar communities.
This is pretty irrelevant. He said "casual observer", he wasn't talking about people who want to shit on feminists. He was talking about people who don't have a strong opinion about the group yet. People who get worked up over things like this damage how the feminism is perceived more than r/mensrights or whatever. Just like every other extremist ever.
How is this a rape joke? It doesn't reference rape at all, correct me if I'm wrong but you have to be reading too far into that line to come out with a conclusion that it's about rape. He could just be talking about the game.
wtf. it wasn't casual banter. it was SCRIPTED.
Can I have a copy of that MS's E3 conference script from where you're obviously getting this information from?
are you trying to tell me you think they don't use teleprompters at E3?
Because it is SOO hard to say things that are not in the teleprompter
