Dressrosa Arc was just absolutely awful to watch.
How bad is it? Is it just limited or is it the special Chargeman Ken Super Mario Bros. 3 bad where they try to do too much with too little knowledge and is mainly animated by interns.
The new pokemon series is a good example of still frames not doing the actual animation justice out of context. [vid]https://track6.mixtape.moe/bksers.webm[/vid]
The problem I have with most anime is the exorbitant amount of exposition that they have. I watched Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Gurren Lagaan, FLCL, and a couple others that I forget, and it's annoying to me that even with such an open and expressive medium as animation, all these shows/movies still have to rely on a motionless character explaining the situation/backstory for 5 minutes instead of just showing it instead. "Show, don't tell" etc etc. Not that this makes these shows bad (I actually love FLCL because it avoids this most of the time) and I know a lot of it has to do with budget constraints, but it's a grievance that I have because every anime I've seen does it. Except Ghibli movies because they're masters at what they do
I recommend everything in Satoshi Kon's filmography. He made four very good movies that make great use of the medium for the most part.
I thought the video was going to begin when it ended. I was expecting him to actually tell in detail about the stylistic techniques people mistake for bad and the artists who use them. Is there somewhere else I could learn from particular artistic styles?
I'm not really an artistic expert, but I think this video does a good job explaining what you're talking about despite the person's presentation: I think people who criticize "bad" art just are taking account of the work being inconvenient for one's eye. But an artist's style can go into many forms as long as there's a good balance and the art is consistent, despite breaking away from conventions or models. Of course unconventional art can still be bad and there's nothing wrong with going into a more traditional, textbook approach, but one can still criticize both if they have such a inconsistent, unbalance style, just not how it simply looks.
I think with the whole "off model, on model" argument really depends on what the scene and the show is trying to convey. Like in a show such as ren and stimpy, the art style being off model is a huge part of the show and uses it to be silly and psychedelic in places. Compare that to a show like King of the Hill, where it's less about the animation humor, and more about dialogue and relatable characters.
On the topic of animation there is this site that has a ton of great moments from anime: https://www.sakugabooru.com/post Sakuga are the moments where basically no tweening exists and everything is pretty much done frame by frame by the artist. Wish the video would have showed more bad examples, maybe exanded a bit more on what is bad. A lot was just saying how tweens which people love to pic are not examples for it which is correct, just took a lot of the video.
Some examples of Off model for me was in Dragon Ball Z, where sometime the face of the character just changes from one shot to another, Like Frieza for example, In some shots he has quite the effeminate face while in others his face looks more masculine and his facial details are more Pronounced. HOWEVER, the ones that takes the cake in off model is Cell on a shot in Dragon Ball GT Thanks to the change of artist: Those eyes man..
@ that video: steven universe is quite possibly the worst show to use the defense "it's just the storyboarder's personal style!" for. it's not as if characters' faces just happen to look slightly different in each episode; it's full of awfully drawn shots and inconsistent heights. it is literally just incompetence. [t]https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/212430164867547137/378975374807400460/unknown.png[/t]
I recall reading somewhere that the artists are instructed to draw the characters whatever size they deem fit for the scene. Could be just hearsay though.
I'll bite, The early episodes of SU also didn't look that great, that was until like half the first season. For example, the First episode actually looks great, but the Second seems to suffer something I call Small Face, where the Facial features look a tad small for the size of the head. For Example: Here's Pearl in the first episode [t]https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/123936675209412608/386347248793157633/Pearl.PNG[/t] She looks all nice. And here's Pearl in the second episode!: [t]https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/123936675209412608/386347252450590720/Perl.PNG[/t] She suffers some small face, also her hair is slighty different too
Tiny nitpick maybe but why is it picture in picture the whole time? I would've preferred it be fullscreen :pudge: Maybe to get around copyright claims actually now that I think about it? Other than that tiny little annoyance, it was an interesting video. Pausing during movement is funny but I didn't know people were using that to say the animation is bad? That seems silly of them.
It's not unapproachable unless you're picking out the worst of any given fanbase to take advice from. I can name a ton of basic entry-level shows just off the top of my head that I think are accessible and any casual viewer who hasn't watched any anime before would easily get into before you even get into anything resembling niche. And "niche" doesn't mean "moe-centric slice of life garbage".
Why do that? Just show the Principal v Deer skit from Nichijou. Immediately win people's attention. Seriously, Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell were *on* Adult Swim back in the day. Same with shows like Trigun and FLCL. If they still aren't interested try something less serious.
I recall reading somewhere that the artists are instructed to draw the characters whatever size they deem fit for the scene. Could be just hearsay though.
That's like the animator's equivalent of saying that you're only pretending to be retarded.
