The Mitsubishi Mirage Is the Worst New Car You Can Buy
Maintenance costs on older cars is a really big misconception, 90s-early 2000s japanese econoboxes like, for example, civics and corollas, can be really damn good value for money, with very cheap parts. Of course when it comes to safety they're deathtraps in comparison but if you don't care about that shit and just need a cheap car they're perfect for it.
I definitely need something safer. I drive my 2 year old niece places haha.

You should get a used Xterra, those are ALWAYS cheap and bulletproof.
Good and practical SUVs.
Buy a volvo 240 (1990 or newer preferably), keep the oil clean, and watch in amazement as the thing just won't stop going, and going, and going....
Honestly, I'm only gentle with myself because it was my first car purchase and I had a limited amount of knowledge. Plus my dad had offered to help me a little bit and I needed a car to get to work and school since everyone else in my house used theirs to work. We have four cars and none of them go unused, even my dad's '99 Mazda Protege.
If I can find a way to absolve myself of the debt and maybe get something better, I will, but like I said, I know so little about cars that I'm not even sure where to begin. I wouldn't want something older for the sake of maintenance costs and the fact that I do enjoy power windows and my aux plugin. The smaller size is also a plus since my depth perception is not great when it comes to parking lol.
But anyway. If I discovered I had options to ease my debt, I'd probably look into them.
Hey you gotta do what you gotta do. Everyone starts out somewhere humble, especially when in real need.

Just stay away from older BMWs/Mercs (though the older ones are more reliable, I can't imagine parts are cheap), italian shit, and french shit.
Theres also the late 90's early 2000's TDIs if you don't mind a diesel car.
Absurd mpg and outright bulletproof. I got one and I couldn't recommend it any more than I already do. Give it proper maintenance and it should last for 500.000 miles, if not more. And this is coming from someone that really hammers the pedal hard.
Which is weird because I don't think the clutch has ever been changed, and its still going strong after 220.000 km...

I swear my '04 CR-V is fucking invincible, if you do the simple maintenance required. My parents bought this in 2004, drove it to Georgia, drove it back, drove it to North Dakota, made three round trips from there, drove it to Ohio and back twice, and now it's my daily driver and makes two transits through Snoqualmie pass a year. It's at just over 115k miles now.
It's never once had any major maintenance issues, not even mid-level stuff like the differentials wearing or timing belt getting a bit iffy. And it's not an unpleasant driver, either.
Now about that safety thing - given it was part of the recent Takata airbags settlement (said airbags can fling shrapnel about). But just replace those and you're good, because it at least has side airbags :v:
That's a weird way to spell Dacia.
FTFY. because Dacia's are way too damn cheap for a new car

Honestly if you're in a place with fairly normal weather, just get a new or slightly used Toyota Corolla. Those things are fucking reliable machines with minimal maintenance and can handle a fair amount of punishment. Owing money/spending too much on a depreciating asset is always more trouble than it's worth.
Then, later on you can get pick up some sports car used for cheaper to thrash about in, but not burning your wallet on daily runabouts.
Only problem with SUV's is that they have a massive tendency to rollover in the event of a crash and when transmission problems creep up with age, they really shit in your cheerios. Especially true of AWD transmissions. Otherwise, if you're not doing much offroading (which I'd say is something a huge majority of people who own SUV's don't do :v:) You're better off with a spacious sedan or a good ol' hatchie.
I drive a 2001 Ford Focus and all those "shitty quirks" would be welcome to me. Car would be an upgrade.
It was my first time buying a car and I had to do a lot of traveling for my job at the time. I wanted something a little bit newer so I wouldn't have to worry about it having too much wear and tear on it already. And I don't really know too much about cars to begin with lol. It was one of the better deals I had locally.
This attitude is a perfect example of an apathy endemic to the car buying public as a whole, at least in the US. Younger people who know little to nothing about cars who are afraid of used cars because of previous wear and want something, anything, new, regardless of how good or bad of a car it is. I'm not even talking about passionate driving experiences or RWD or horsepower or interestingness.
People go to a stealership, sit down in the cheapest model, and as long as it doesn't fall to pieces like the Bluesmobile they go "this is nice" and sign the loan. People are afraid of used cars because of often-misplaced stigmas. Even someplace like Carmax which charges you 1.5-2x as much as a private sale would is still a way better choice than buying new, especially since they will also sell you a warranty (which will pay for itself very quickly if you buy something like a Land Rover or Porsche or BMW etc).
People basically pay for the peace of mind, but don't want to pay enough to get a good car with their peace of mind, valuing that peace of mind so much that their driving experience suffers tremendously, then reassuring themselves that "it's good enough" afterwards to assuage self-doubt over the decision. Lots of "at least it's got a warranty" and "well it's new so it's gotta be reliable, right?" and other type sentiments.
Comparatively you could buy a far better used car with a comparable third-party warranty for the same amount of money, but that carries the stigma that "used cars are used up and unreliable and worn out" and the idea that a 100,000 mile car is out of life, when it's still plenty usable.
Just something for people to think about.
(Not trying to put you down, Pascall, just using your post as an example)
I mean, to clarify, it was a used car. It's a 2014 and I bought it like mid 2016.
So not SUPER used but still used. :v
It's an economy car made in Thailand for developing markets (SEA mostly), and it's less than 10k.
You get power windows, power mirrors and automatic AC. And a four star crash rating. And a decent warranty.
Doesn't sound that bad tbh if you factor in the price.
Exactly what I was thinking. I drive a 2000 wrangler and this thing has better features. Some of his quirks he talked about had me thinking like wow, is he describing my jeep? Are these even problem? haha
But I bought it used and I only owe like $7k left on it so it's better than nothing!
Yeah, but it's a 17 year old jeep, shit must suck in SEA markets to be that far behind in terms of features. I mean, from what he's describing I noticed he glossed over safety features because it's likely the car has none.

Some of the complaints were pretty valid (those tiny tires were sad) but half of the video was pretty awkwardly nitpicky. I mean, I can handle brief (albeit obviously predictable) complaints about no Bluetooth and USB, but fuck's sake, complaining about having only four speakers? Most head units don't even have more than 4.1 outputs, what do you need more speakers for? My fully-loaded JVC-upgraded Highlander has only four speakers.
That tirade about the hood panel curve was almost pathetic, too. If they wanted to keep the hood line flat, they'd just move the badge down or the line up... it's a styling decision to draw your eyes to the badge.

and seeing the ground through the engine bay. Like that just means its easy to access everything so that should be a plus haha
maybe I'm just used to being so behind the times in terms of car tech that I don't even know these things are actually negatives and quirks.

Yeah that just means the engine bay is larger than necessary. Like mentioned, if anything that makes it so you don't need to remove shit to work on the engine.
Yeah that just means the engine bay is larger than necessary. Like mentioned, if anything that makes it so you don't need to remove shit to work on the engine.
generally yeah, which can be real useful because working on a car where everything is compactly squashed together is worse than death
My friend has a 300ZX TT and I'm sure he wishes he had more room in his engine bay. The other day we were taking out his battery and that was a huge pain in the ass because of how cramped it is in there.
Of course what also matters is where everything is. My 08 civic si coupe is very easy to work on BUT for some reason they put the oil filter next to the front passenger wheel so you have to take off the wheel to access it unless you have a tentacle or an elephant trunk for an arm

There is nothing wrong with that statement. It was a used car when it was bought, it still is. If it was a new car when it was bought it would be a used car now, even if it never changed hands.

ive owned hondas before (once got drunk and bid on a 97 civic with a b16b in the back seat, ended up winning it for $400) and im glad ive never owned a honda long enough to put an engine in it even with the smallest motor they got a civic has a cramped as fuck engine bay
thought about making a daily of that thing but the AA thread convinced me that that was a terrible platform with a terrible motor and coming from nothing but v8s my whole life I'd be terribly disappointed
after recently driving my aunt's lotus I'm very glad I never finished that product
also AA can corroborate on this I used to buy cars all the time that were either totaled or at police auction and offroad them and hondas were always the first to break
nissan hardbodies and ex-police crown vics were the ones that lasted the longest if anyone wants a $2000 or less running and driving turd
old detective/supervisor or fire chief crown vics are the best bang/buck cars on the market if anyone is looking for a car. hit up a police auction and a perfect crown vicwill go for $1800. if you're into something else like a bmw it might be an impound car and it might have many cigarette butts in the ashtray, but it'll be a mechanically perfect car for under $3000. last auction I went to I picked up a 2003 bmw 5 series for $1200 and all it needed was a jump

civics will forever have a ruined reputation because of all the boyracers that stick a 30cm fartcan and redline it every gear change

if you can somehow manage to find a late 90s civic that nobody has messed with it's probably a perfectly fine daily driver but now I'm very much aware that throwing a b16b into a roller is a terrible idea
[editline]30th December 2017[/editline]
like I had the thing running and driving but stuff like the ac and radio I never hooked up
I still don't miss that turd as much as I'd have missed the $1200 I got from it
