Also a tip for anyone who might look into playing it, I think it's forgivable to savescum on resting due to RNG bullshit constantly fucking you over (when you rest, there's a chance of several things happening like being robbed, having a squad member abandon you etc.), and without resting it can be quite difficult to regain health.
You shouldn't use campfires to rest at all, just fast travel to a nearest inn. There's one part of the game where loading over and over again is completely justified. [sp]the fucking russian roulette part. you can end up with no party members AT ALL[/sp]
Also, I don't like to call using game's save system anyhow "savescumming". IMO it fits more when you emulate an old game which didn't feature saving but your emulator actually can do it.
The only reason I picked up Undertale over LISA was I had been waiting for UT since January. I'll probably get LISA as soon as I can. Mother 3 and other Earthbound-like games are the only JRPGs I really like.

Now what would be my fate if I told you [sp]I speedrun the game?[/sp]
Lisa is a pretty good game but definitely in a different tone straight off the bat from undertale but hits the same highs and lows.
I was curious so i looked into it and here are a couple of amusing facts about the people who disagreed:
9 people disagreed, 8 have their Steam profiles linked on Facepunch
• 2 out of 7 actually own Lisa (1 profile was private, so I couldn't see), one has played 0.5 hours (not enough to dismiss entirely IMO, though still better than disagreeing and not having played it at all), the other 3.5 hours. Not that it discredits their opinions on the game, but for reference I think it should take at least 10 hours to complete.
• 6 out of 8 have an Undertale themed FP Avatar/Steam Avatar/Profile Background
I'm not trying to say Lisa is better, or these people are wrong to think Undertale is better, but I do think it's kind of shitty to disagree without having played it yourself. It's both disingenuous and comes off as a bit blindly fanboyish to be honest.
I was the one with the private profile I assume? I admittedly haven't beaten Lisa the Painful, I've only gotten just under 3 hours in, and haven't played The First or (obviously) Joyful. I wanted to give it a shot because I was interested in another indie-RPG and Undertale's sudden popularity seemed to overshadow it in a lot of ways. But it just didn't click with me. I appreciate what it was trying to do, but I dunno, the tone didn't do it for me. And I don't usually have a problem with really dark or violent tones, and I actually like dark humor, just in Lisa's case I wasn't feeling it.
I certainly don't think it's bad and I certainly didn't get far enough into make a call on it's objective quality, but I just didn't feel a drive to finish it. So I'd personally say I liked Undertale more.
Not that I think comparing them is really meaningful. Besides both being indie RPGs, they're both totally different.
I played Undertale first and loved it, and checked out Lisa afterwards since I was craving for a similar RPG after finishing it. Eventually loved Lisa more after playing through both of them. Granted it actually is hard to compare the two aside from being both RPGs with a similar Earthbound/Mother-y presentation and both have excellent writing on giving every character a unique and memorable personality, but everything else like the gameplay and tone is really different.
Undertale has this more uplifting tone and handles dark themes like Nintendo does, so when it gets dark, it gets really dark but still has a positive tone at the end of the day and serves as a way to amplify a happy ending. Lisa is just really dark, with large dosage of silly humor and dark comedy, and the comedy part itself is sort of a necessity in a way to make the dark and serious plot easier to swallow. Enjoyed both games, and both of them have really great endings, but Lisa's plot and ending just felt more powerful for me in the end, especially after playing through its Joyful expansion. Also just loved the party system and companions overall.
But yeah at the end of the day both games are worth playing and both are quite an emotional roller coaster.
Both games also have a really radical soundtrack.

I disagreed because I absolutely hate RNG mechanics. Just from a gameplay perspective, there's barely anything that makes Lisa stand out from any other turn-based RPG. Even if you dislike Undertale's combat system, it at least tries something unique(even if it's not necessarily new). In Lisa, grinding is almost a necessity as some of the best armor and weapons are locked behind obscene prices, made even worse with the DLC. At least Lisa's DLC gives you some control over your damage, but it's still RNG whether you hit or miss, and that in my opinion is lazy and just unfun. In Undertale, the only reason you'd want to grind is because you suck at dodging bullets which is understandable, and armor is found throughout the game. Each armor and weapon in Undertale does something unique, such as one item healing you every other turn, or a weapon that makes your invincibility period last longer. Lisa as a game is basically "get as many high numbers as possible and pray to RNG that you kill the boss before the boss can kill you", just like so many other RPGs. I avoid turn-based RPGs for this reason, so Undertale at least to me was a pleasant surprise.
If you don't like something, why would you go so far to shit on it when you could just ignore it?
Anyways, did True Pacifist a few months back and finally got around to doing genocide.
I really enjoyed both, but I feel as if genocide ended kind of abruptly.

well yeah if you kill everybody do you expect much else to be going on
I don't know why, but when I started playing Undertale I fell in a hole just right at the start of the game and that removed in me any kind of desire to keep playing. :what: I dunno why.
Mind you, this was before the game was even out, so I was 100% unbiased regarding the to-be fanbase
If you're going to let something's fanbase affect your enjoyment of it then you are weak and only like things because it reaffirms that you have the "right opinion"
This applies to everything
Man, what a thread. Best 8 pages I've read in a long while- thanks to Rusty for kickstarting said entertainment. Anyway, on "topic"-Undertale is a pretty good game. I liked it a lot, and I think people interested in it and/or Earthbound and/or Lisa should at least give it a try. If you don't like it, that's just fine, because opinions and such.
I have a feeling that if this keeps up it'll become HYPU V2: Rusty's Greatest sHITpoSts
By the time it would have gotten to V2 there will be a new thing for people to hate because of the fans!

Gentlemen, start your arguments.
Witcher 3 isn't really an RPG when you compare it to Undertale tbh:doghidden:
