I just hope we don't see the survival/zombie game effect
where there are hundreds of games trying to milk the same genre but every one of them being, at best, almost acceptable games.
basically, the logic is "Undertale was a success. Obviously if we copy it, we'll be a success to", when in reality, Markiplier, Star wars, Call of Duty, pizza, ecigs, and Louis CK are all succesful because of their own reasons. Just because shoving glass up your ass is popular, doesn't mean you'll get lots of attention by doing it.
we're STARTING to see this with souls-likes, just barely.
After Lords of the Fallen came out, I thought "Is this the beginning of the end?" But there doesn't seem to be big industry backing souls-like games.
personally I've always hated bullet-hells and 2d rpg-like's with a passion so undertale would never click for me if I had played it fully. I tried to play it and quit within 15 minutes. I already knew it wouldn't click by then. I'll never play it because it's not the kind of game I like playing. That's just how it is.
but I've seen far more than enough play throughs to really respect the game for what it is; A game that's good, but not for me.

There's a few souls-like games like dark maus, eitr, salt&sanctuary and I know we'll see more and more as time goes on. These three wear their mimicry on their sleeve by going as far as just copying the hud lay out. Not to say they're terrible for doing it, but they're not hiding it. This is just the first wave.
Survival games have it the hardest. There are a HUGE number of indie devs trying to be successful with them. That's a far broader genre though.
My friend bought me Undertale after an argument about it so I played it, beat neutral run in 5 hours.
It did nothing special at all for me. It's the kind of game that's completely carried by its cast, and if you don't connect with any of them it just falls flat on its face, which is what happened to me.
The game openly criticizes killing, which is fine, but it got grating as hell. I've no problem finding alternate peaceful solutions to conflict in video games but this game was hamhanded about it.
Don't get me wrong though the game did a lot of cool shit with the fourth wall. and the soundtrack was A+, definitely the heavy hitter in it. Had some moments that made me chuckle as well but overall the game isn't something to rave about.

There are more people hating it because it's popular and not because they played and didn't like it, that's for sure

It has to do with the game having characters that are extremely distinctive and unique. They all have unique designs, and are easily memorable to fans. People have fun redrawing them and making jokes / fiction about them. Everything is bright and can easily be made friendly. it especially helps when kids can access it easily.

there was some other indie Souls-like i can't remember the name of, it was like a third person thing with graphics similar to Receiver and your character had a halberd and maybe a short-sword? i think it was on early access and it was called Crucible or something like that?

I know nothing about Lisa other than its basic premise, so I have no context to those pictures, but I think those pictures alone make me think Lisa would be more up my alley than Undertale was.
I played up to the[sp]Papyrus fight[/sp]and, I dunno, the game just didn't do anything for me. It felt a little too quirky for my taste. Not that's a bad thing though. I'm just not the audience for that game.

Lisa has plenty of quirk and silly jokes like Undertale has, but there's a healthy helping of depression on the side as well.
Undertale was quite charming when I begun. However, that charm wore off by about the 211th skeleton pun. Also the "combat system" is fucking trash. I liked it to start with, but I got sick of it really quickly. I can see how it would appeal to some people but it doesn't do much for me.

If you're gonna go into a game with nothing but negative thoughts of the fanbase in your head, you're gonna have a bad temm.

I wouldn't really say it's quirk and jokes are like UT. I mean it does have some stuff like Terry, but most of the Humor is stuff like setting fire to children or an ugly middle aged man in a one-piece selling his body.

b-but i played the whole game and -still- think its pretty fucking overhyped for being a pretty standard fare rpg

it was just kinda a strange way to add... well gameplay.
like it's so out of place, I think I'd have enjoyed the game a little more if it went for a traditional turn based RPG style combat system. It was just obtuse.
As someone who cant stand turn based RPGs, the bullet hell system was the part that made the combat for me. Without it, it would of been miserable for me.
well that's fine if you don't like the genre, but the exact same argument can and has been made against the bullethell system, except for the fact that at least the JRPG style combat would have been a sensical design choice, rather than a completely out of nowhere 'look we're different' gameplay mechanic that just alienates a different playerbase entirely.

A traditional method wouldnt work, youd need an alternative. A big part of this game is the pacifist path where you dont level up. If the system was based on numbers, you wouldnt have the abillity to survive later encounters and the pacifist path would be near impossible by the last few bosses. And if the monsters didnt rise in difficulty, trivialy easy on the neutral/geno run. It makes more sense for your abillity to avoid damage to be determined by skill rather then math.
Besides, the final Genocide and Neutral bosses wouldnt be half as fun or memorable as simple turn based combat encounters.
alright, you sold me on that, but the bullethell method is simply just as splitting as the JRPG method when it comes to what people -enjoy- playing. I know a shitton of people who don't like the game (not because its 'popular' like some people are so quick to say), but because it's just not a fun gameplay style in their eyes.
and to be dead honest with you, I can respect that opinion. It's really strange and while it works for some fights it seems insanely unnecessary going through the whole game.
Having a fully fledged conversation system for example, would have been a very interesting way to handle it. It would have added some genuine value to talking enemies down, rather than 'find the gimmick out of 4 options, press the gimmick'
Feel free to take my opinion with a grain of salt due to my avatar.
To me, Undertale is a great game. It's nothing special in terms of gameplay or visuals (of course), but rather in how it handles its characters, story, and world.
And I'm not a huge fan of JRPGs or Shmups. Mostly because they're simply "too anime" for me or have far too similar stories/premises most of the time.
However, the extreme end of Undertale's fanbase is just atrocious. Constantly heralding the game as if it were some gift from a divine creator, or as the best game ever made. Making cringe-worthy fanfics and fanart. Getting extremely upset if you so much as say one ounce of negativity towards it. It goes on and on.
It's not like the extreme detractors are any better though. For one, can we please stop calling it a "meme-game." I consider a meme-game to be a game that uses already established memes as the basis for its humor. Undertale doesn't do that, it's only spawned memes since it released. Just like how Portal doesn't do that, yet people have taken to calling that a "meme-game" because it spawned memes.
But, here's the thing. You can ignore both sides if you want, and just play and enjoy/dislike the game based on its own merits. If you liked it, great. If you didn't like it, great as well. To dislike it without trying it and blaming it on "the fanbase" is just being ignorant though. Unless the game is online focused (which Undertale isn't), you won't ever have to really interact with the fanbase unless you choose to.
That's pretty much what I did, and I came to the conclusion of it being a great game. Probably one of my favorite games in recent years, but not "THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME" or even "The Best PC Game." And to be frank, its major appeal starts to wear off after you've gone through all the runs. There's no real replayability outside of them unless you want to know absolutely everything about the game. And while the jokes are hilarious the first time around, they quickly grow old on replays. It's very much an "in the moment" sort of game. It gives you one really good playthrough that you can only experience once, because trying to do so again just ends up making it feel less special than it was before.
people call it a meme game because of the hilarious amount of 'memes' that the fanbase has forced out of it. that dog emote being constantly used here now is honestly grating.
I wouldn't mind the fanbase so much if the shit part wasn't so vocal, but much like what happened to Homestuck (which I was a really big fan of up until the trolls took center stage), even the community -here- about is has become offputting
