By the time that happened the game was dead for over two years and the update barely brought any players back. Its not like Hirez came back to save the day, just 2 or so devs that felt bad about how poorly they treated the game decided to give it a small update. It was more of a "sorry" then it was a comeback.
I never said it was anything else. I only said that it's an important detail to miss considering the video implies the game hasn't been touched in the last 4 years.
hat's because Tribez was an extremely unique game/series that hi-rez messed up badly in such a small amount of time. The reason the game didn't make money was because the company made so many bad decisions and then abandoned the game after they screwed up instead of fixing it.
This is not a unique case tho. There are other games from bigger and more infamous companies out there that don't get nearly as much hate as T:A and Hi-Rez seem to get. Even after the success of smite and "good enough" success of paladins people still belive that all future Hi-Rez titles are either doomed to fail or they are just "quick cashgrabs that will be dropped once they make even" (People actually used to think that's what happened with tribes, some still do).
So again: what makes this such an special case? I won't say "they did nothing wrong", but they didn't do anything out of the ordinary (outside of attempting to develop a complex niche game as their very second videogame title. a bold but not very smart move that cost them a chunk of money and got them a lot of everlasting hatred).
There was just over a year between the time Tribes launched and when Todd announced there were no more planned updates, and for much of that period it was plagued with server issues and game breaking bugs. That's a pretty short lifespan for a critically acclaimed FPS, especially one with no sequel and no mod tools, which ironically they originally claimed wouldn't be released because they planned on "continuing to update the game and provide development as a service"
Hi-Rez certainly isn't the only developer guilty of this, they just stand out more because of how there's not really any other similar games to take its place.
T2 Construct was great too.
ACCM's zombie/bioderm survival was so fucking cool. There were flying ones that would pick up players and let go of them mid-air

Its because the games failures were Hi-rezs ault and instead of trying to fix them they just quickly jumped onto a cash grab. If smite lost Hirez money on launch I bet they would have killed that too instead of fixing it. Hirez fucked the game up and then jumped ship. Tribes fans weren't your average casual gamer who are ignorant or forget things.

Also the fact that Ascend was the genres only hope.

Hi-Rez did try to fix the game though, several times, both by trying to pander to the "hardcore" players and the casuals, it just didn't go well at all. I know that if smite failed it would have died, that's obvious. What kind of emotion pull is that? Do you think I haven't had games I was really into get dropped before or something? And I mentioned a lot of times that I know the game died because of their mistakes and them having little experience developing that kind of games (or developing games period). Also you can't really say that second to last part when the only thing that still fuels the hate is people being ignorant of the circumstances (like you believing Tribes was dropped for no reason, that it could just be fixed and magically saved).
They just totally fucked it by the addition of traditional ballistic weapons, hitscan or not. There's a reason T2's chaingun was inaccurate as fuck

hi-rez specifically created a council made up of the top players, bouncing ideas off them and taking feedback in a ~weekly discussion.
you know what hi-rez did? completely fucking ignored any and all suggestions made, did the exact opposite in some situations, and sabotaged their own game.
Had no idea midair was a thing, gw you just sold me a game boi

I remember that server & the regular combat construction version. The admin told me to stop firing the M60 backwards to fly across the map at mach 1. :disgust:
There's also their complete failure at trying to make it an e-sport, including constant rule changes at tournaments and not actually paying out prize money or in-game currency months after tournaments were over.

I played in the tournament they had at Quakecon, and we made it to the finals, but the rules basically removed 90% of the game's content. No vehicles, pathfinder only IIRC.
no vehicles and pathfinders only means it was probably a lt tournament.

also for some further information on hi-rez getting banned from the tribes subreddit;
they shut down their forums and blindly redirected people to the tribes subreddit for official discussion, something they did not tell the moderators they were going to do.
this resulted in a ton of backlash, and along with hi-rez bart and apc (who was later unbanned) getting completely banned from the subreddit because they were taking the absolute piss out of it and was shilling smite.
the screenshot at 2:19 made me dead inside
It's easy to point at that comment and laugh, but you have to consider Overwatch characters move without inertia, so even with a hitscan weapon it isn't possible to guarantee a hit.
It's not a smart comment but also not relevant in comparison to Tribes.
T2 Construct was great too.
As much as I loved Starsiege Tribes, T2 Construct was SO GOOD. Sadly it was never as popular when I played it.
TA was my absolute peak, once you figure out Sentinel you can completely lock down approaches. One shot as they come in, one as they leave.
Tribes ascend was great for a while, but then suddenly it wasn't.

Many people say that is the day they put on a speed cap.
